Okay... I find this funny but not the man who got hit. I was shown this my my local fireman. I f you look in the background there is a man who see's it happening and thinks:
Ooh I want some attention and falls over. Look. 0:33
@scruffyfromki3 and to anyone who thinks this video is funny. The firefighter in this video was not injured, he DIED! This video in NOT FUNNY, it should be used as a training tool to help reduce injuries and or deaths of firefighters from airbags.
I was one of the paramedics on the scene. They did indeed attempt to pop the hood to access the battery, but it was causing a lot of pain for one of our patients and they opted to work around it. This was in August, 1995 and there were some serious lessons learned that impacted and improved care. Google searches can find some pics of the control box that tripped the airbag. The bag didn't deploy at the accident as it was a strong side impact, not frontal.
I heard from a paramedic supervisor for the SFFD (also my EMT instructor) that they cut the power to the batteries before they do the extrication... shouldn't the be universal?
This took place in Dayton, Ohio the reason why the battery wasn't cut was because the patient in the vehicle was complaining fo movement in the vehicle while they were trying to cut the battery. So they stopped due to the discomfort for the patient. They also did not stablize the vehicle at all. So that is why the car shook so much. And that is Extrication 101. Also the the Center control module was shorten out due to the spreaders touching it.
It is getting harder and harder to perform any extrication on these new vehicles. I have training at least 2 times a year and even some of the older model vehicles are very dangerous to just cut open. Then on top of that the 04 and newer models of the ford trucks have magnesium in the core support so if they are on fire you have to use a dry chemical fire exingusher instead of water with foam.
Making cars safer for people and more dangerous for firefighters!!!! all firefighters be aware the cylinders they use to deploy air bags are also in your A. B. and C posts on some models
Wow that sucks. Im in the academy right now and we just learned a few weeks to try to disconnect the batter specifically because of something like this happening. I hope he was allright.
why didnt the airbags freaking deploy when the car wrecked in the first place? durrrrrrrrrrrrrr durrr mitsubishi blame it on the fire fighter oh they cut something or didnt disconnect the battery well the crash must have dissconected the battery then right?.... cause it didnt deploy on impact idiots
not all airbags deploy in a crash, airbags are directional. Say for instance a side impact crash, only the side impacts would normally deploy. I cant tell from this video if the car was involved in a frontal crash or what.

really you are going to laugh i'm a firemen and things like that really hurt i have seen air bags blow up an cause 2 degree burns so think befor you type
@Irishmobsta008 before u go geting all assy iam a firefighter to and that could have been prevented if they cut the batterie cables before the started extercation....thats one of the first things we do when we pull up two guys start cribing one sees how trapt the patcents are one checks hazards and cuts cables
@volff130 well you are right but most of older air bags (which are put in cars if the stock one was already deployed) dont require an electrical trigger.. and you are right cut the battery best way to go..
This incident ocurred in August, 1995 in Dayton, Ohio. Two firefighters were injured while trying to extricate a pt. from a heavily damaged vehicle. A firefighter was operating hydraulic speaders trying to pry some of the floor loose, when he crushed the airbag control module in the center console. This is what activated the aribags. There would not have been pressurized gas cylinders in this vehicle.
it was the passanger air bag that deployed. most passanger airbags are sodium azide, which is stored in the back of the airbag in the dash. There in NO gas cylinder in the center of the vehilce for frontal airbags. There are gas cylinders in the "B" post for the seatbelt pre tensioning system. however that car was old enough if only had a driver and passanger airbag.
I am an extrication instructor for the fire service, I have knowledge of what happened and specifics about this specific video. They crew was attemting to lift the steating wheel and placed the spreader againsted the air bag control unit, which is licated in the console on the transmission hump by the gear shifter. The capasitor in the box can stor energy for up to twenty minutes after power down, however if force is applied to the box it can activate the airbags.
air bags are self contained there isn't a feed of gas from somewhere in the car. basically airbags are just explosives in the middle of your steering wheel.
well.. evean if battery cabels are cut.. air bags still active for 20 min... soooooooooooo... after a crash.. and didnt go off yet... very sesative.... sooo.. stay safe
im pretty sure this car has a sensor in the center inside the car, so the impact form the initial crash was obviously not enough to deploy the bags, they may have bumped it just enough to trip the sensor off just from moving around inside the car.
did you not see the guy get straight knocked out the car??? i set one off at the junk yard the other day, thing was laying in the center (no seats) when it deployed, hit me in the arm, then launched into the trunk... they are VERY powerful, to be able to completely inflate 500 times faster than you can blink in order to save you in a crash
Dave, listen to the audio. The manufacturer thinks ff's created a short while cutting, thereby activating the bag. I didn't see any cutting in progess, but it's not the best video quality to begin with.
Most vehicle electrical systems have enough charge to deploy the airbag after an accident if the car gets hit a second time (deploy twice in double impact collisions). The hazard is if the sensor trips or there is a short, the airbag will deploy. There have been multiple police officer injuries after accidents when they reach in to get the registration and are hit.
Cutting the battery before packaging the patient is the best solution but it doesn't always work.
Okay... I find this funny but not the man who got hit. I was shown this my my local fireman. I f you look in the background there is a man who see's it happening and thinks:

an airbag can still deploy after cutting the battery. Thats one of the first thing they tell you in BVR.

there are steel frames which firefighters can shove over the steering wheel. They shred/obstruct the bag when it deploys.
Unfortunatellly, this only works at the wheel, not the other airbags.
Nomasain 3 years ago
Could have had dual airbags and the 2nd had not gone off until it hit the firefighter
JETPHOTO35 3 years ago
Most airbag systems have a reserve power storage center.
This ensures proper deployment and airbag computer power in the event the accident is severe enough to disconnect or destroy the battery.
gavincurtis 3 years ago
@gavincurtis The reserve power system for the airbags only lasts a very short time. Under 5 seconds.

Does anyone know the story about this video? How did the airbag go off? What Dept was this? How badly hurt was the Firefighter? Please post. Thanks.
