Chuck Berry claims that Louie Jordan was the first to 'rock and roll' .. he was heavily influenced by Jordan and his guitar player... Chuck might know a few things about rock and roll music.
This sounds like the way they were playing it in the early/mid '50s.
Rock The Joint (with the same guitar solo as Rock Around The Clock) was the flip to Haley' Ice Heart, earlier than Crazy Man Crazy, but the words 'rock and roll' actually can be found on Ella Fitzgerald and Red Nickels records from the late '30s
This must have been either a later recording or a stereo re-mix of earlier tracks; it couldn't have been released this way in 1949. Sounds great though; with all due respect to Bill Haley, I cringe when I hear "Crazy Man, Crazy" described as "the first rock & roll record".
@BlackMariaDownUnder He started earlier than Jordan, but his earlier stuff was more like a transition from R&B. Like Beethoven is to romantic. He used a lot of soon-to-be romantic styles and techniques, but he is considered as the closing of classical in stead of the beginning of romantic.
@AlphaOmegoat IKE TURNER STARTED BEFORE LOUIS JORDAN??? I'm sorry, but that is incorrect! Louis Jordan was playing in the 1930s when Ike was just a baby! Louis began playing with Clarence Williams (and four years later, with Chick Webb) in 1932, when Ike was one year old! Not trying to top you or anything, just want the record straight with my man Mr. Jordan!
This song originally came out much earlier in the late 30s/early 40s in a different arrangement and was a hit then. In the 1950s a young arranger named Quincy Jones rearranged the song for Louis Jordan and he recorded it then. This is an even later version (1958) updated for the rock and roll crowd. Listen to all three versions, they are quite different and each work for their time.
@AviatikD1 I've heard all versions & there's more like 5. This may be the original or similar in that it has a boogie woogie/r&b jazz arrangement w/ distorted guitar but I'm not sure of the length because I've found 3 versions of the same arrangement ranging lengths from over 4mins, 5:06 to 5:16. 1 is possibly a remastered. The other 2 include 1 w/o guitar & more sax while the last recording kinda has a funky organ that acts as a drum. Chuck b is cited saying jordan was the first to play rock.
Everyone who just responded to me is confusing "rock and roll" with "rock." Little Richard was "rock and roll", not "rock". "Rock and roll" was a genre popular in the 50s which was basically rhythmicized blues. "Rock" began in the 60s and is based around electric guitars. Please don't confuse the two genres.
@joeschmoe2003 Chuck Berry's maybelline was the first not have sax or trumpets & put electric guitars as the main instrument &solo in 1955. It was still called RocknRoll not Rock. Chuck B is quoted saying Louis J. was the first to play RocknRoll. He influenced Chuck B,Little Richard,Ray Charles,James Brown,& Bill Haley. He was the first to incorporate all elements secularly after Rosetta Tharpe was the first to do it in gospel. Those that followed only smoothened it & lessened or removed the sax
Louis Jordan was the master. Elvis was the pupil, and he was pretty good. Pat Boone was the racist establishment's answer to both of them. Let's get the record straight!
Listen to that piano riff. It sounds similar to many riffs later used in Parliament's music, and when this song came out George Clinton was only 8 years old! People often say that Louis Jordan laid the foundation for rock and roll, but even more than rock and roll he laid the foundation for funk. In fact most of Louis Jordan's music could be called "proto-funk."
@newyears1985 proto-funk? hell yeah! BUT the foundation of rock was laid down the first time a guy with a stick and a long and his buddy with a reed flute started jamming. 8^)
@GrigoriZhukov Actually to be rock, by definition a song HAS to include an electric guitar, since rock is based around the distortion and other effects of the electric guitar. Therefore, rock as a genre could not have existed until the electric guitar existed.
@joeschmoe2003 If you say so...rocknroll is rocknroll. It's music, the instruments don't define it...the music doesn't define the insturments. The people who play them do.
@joeschmoe2003 Actually this is rock and roll. The instruments used do not define what a style of music is, it is the "musical elements" (such as the rhythm and harmonies) that define it. For example there are modern styles of Jazz that use a distorted guitar. It wouldn't be called rock because the music contains all of the elements of jazz. Secondly there are classic and modern rock songs that do not use a distorted guitar.
@nybs55 Chuck Berry's maybelline was the first not have sax or trumpets & put electric guitars as the main instrument &solo in 1955.
@joeschmoe2003 incorrect. rock, blues, any type of genre, doesn't need electric instruments. they're just prefered because of the amplification, effects, and because electric guitars are easier to play. back in the old days of rock and roll they used acoustic not just because of it's unique sound that electric cannot achieve but also because it's harder to play and brings you up a level over their electric counter-parts. practice on an acoustic and when you play an electric live you'll see.
@joeschmoe2003 Chuck Berry's maybelin was the first not have sax or trumpets & put electric guitars as the main instrument &solo in 1955. It was still called RocknRoll not Rock. Chuck B is quoted saying Louis J. was the first to play RocknRoll. He influenced Chuck B,Little Richard,Ray Charles,James Brown,& Bill Haley. me an my bro used to play this cut on 78s way back in the day, what memories .. they "records" belonged to my dad, he never knew we played them.Lord .. back when music was music.
its hilarious how people judge music only by the percentage of originality in it and the percentage of music that came after and was influenced by it. an artist can take whats around and make a little modification that gives it a completely different sense and be totally ignored by the ones following him and still be a great artist
@atirisdes still suck?? your talking about music that came out in 1945 and people still enjoy it....just because you cant get its groove doesnt mean that that much many more artists will be able to say the same about their hits....he had #1 hits on the r&b and pop charts and actually holds a record for the former
I love it all!!Rock'N'Roll,Rockabilly,Blues,I would call this Swing or Jump Blues rather than true R&B but there is a fine line between the two styles. As for Bill Haley. He may not have invented Rock'N'Roll, but he was THE first International Rock'N'Roll Star, that is fact.As for Elvis nobody can beat his Sun Records!!I love Louie Jordan too though. It's not all just about white cats copying black cats, the black Rockers also copied from white artists. If any of you know you're stuff you would know.
Some people say this is the first rock 'n roll song ever. well, is it? They say rockin' a lot, and so does Wynonie Harris, and so does Jackie Brenston, but I'm not sure that word makes it rock 'n roll. It's the sound, not the tag. Still sounds like R'nB. Columbus didn't discover America, but...I know Bill Haley isn't a popular choice, but he sure popularized it.
Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five was a great influence on rock'n'roll and most of all on Bill Haley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. The guitar players Bill Jennings and Carl Hogan was impressive musicans and often mentioned by other artists, compared with performers like Les Paul, Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker.
it is good old Louis, its just when he was older and doing novelty recordings for hardcore fans. A very similar recording of this song was on the Louis Jordan the Shuggie Otis sessions album I think.
Ray Charles and Quincy Jones swear by Louis Jordan. Ray Charles remade so many of his songs that when he started his own label; his first artist signed was Louis Jordan to repay him. Louis Jordan rocked everybody from 18-80, dumb, cripple, and crazy. if you couldn't walk he would carry you. The only person close to or predating Louis Jordan is Fats Waller!
