@malditoinvierno That's a real nice comment. in 1989, the US helped you out of a 13 year long fascist regime of Augusto Pinochet (which the people of chile supported at the beginning until you realized it was a bad idea) and helped you to establish a republic. Think about it.

A more accurate analogy would be to say that the CIA built the theme park.
Chile had a fine fucntioning Democracy. And Allende was beloved by Chileans. It can hardly be said of him that he treated Chileans "like shit." Without CIA's disinformation campaign, its economic blockades, its monkeying with the transportation system, & its support of the fascist Pinochet, Chileans would be far better off today.

That was not Allende's intent. Nor was it necessary.
Allende was "convicted" by the US of being a Marxist, which he was. He nationalized the Copper industry, owned by a US Corporation. He wanted a more equitable share of the profits to go to Chileans. He was also elected democratically by Chileans.
The "confrontation" w/US was cooked up by CIA. Why did leftist Evo Morales in Bolivia disband US embassy in La Paz last year? Because of Chile's CIA experience.
"Collision course with USA" That was not Allende's intent(...) Allende was

Not his intent ? NOT HIS INTENT ?. In the context of the Cold War, voting in a Marxist in the 70s is todays equivalent of voting in a pro- Alkayda president. Unacceptable and you´re gonna get squashed like roadkill.
Do nations have a right to determine their own politics? Or do they not? You have but one choice to answer.
Whatever his ideological bent, Allende was elected democratically by the Chilean people. The State Department's report on the election expressed alarm at Allende's "intelligent, moderate" Marxism. He was hardly a wild-eyed revolutionary.
It is only in America where the mention of the words "socialism" or (God forbid) "communism" sends the hearer into fits of anguish & hair-pulling.
Germany 1938 brings up serious questions which would take a great deal of time to answer.
You, however, are not interested in serious debate. By the manner & tone of your written comments, you are interested only in quick, snappy, ill-considered, off-the-cuff answers the point of which is the self-satisfction in thinking that you have won some sort of contest. You conflate your inconsequential personal battles w/the ramifications of political action & policy. You are not serious.
You´re hilarious you fu&%in Commie ape-wad :1) Germany became a Nazi superpower precisely BECAUSE nobody stopped her in her tracks."Appeasement", hello ? So yes, countries DO NOT have free reign on self determination.

Pinochet was most certainly fascist in the true sense of the term. He jailed, tortured and murdered political opponents & dismantled the Chilean consitution. The effects of the Neoliberal economic "reforms" cripple the Chilean economy to this day.
What's the matter? Can't take it when someone points out the obvious support for fascists by the U.S.? It's SOP.
@berto2u2 Dude, I dunno WTF I'm talking about, really...I'm just repeating sh%$ I heard on Limbaugh. Dude, 1973 was a battle of the "elites" for control of that "shoestring" sh%$hole. For the CIA's efforts, 1000s of Chileans and a few other nationals (including Americans) were tortured & murdered by member's of the puppet fascist Pinochet's government. All of the tortured, murdered & disappeared were chosen for elimination because of their politics.
This is the essence of fascism; the brutal repression of all political opponents. All of it brought to you by America's CIA, funded by suitcases full of American taxpayer dollars.

Riiiight...so you DO acknowledge that "self-determination" has its limits.
RideMyBMW 2 years ago
Germany 1938 & Chile 1973 is an entirely false & innappropriate analogy. Here are several reasons why:
1. The US never interfered w/German elections as it did in Chile's elections.
2. The US entered WW2 because of aggressive acts by a foreign power.
3. Chile never attacked the US.
So: Nations have the right to determine their own form of government. They do not have the right to attack other nations unprovoked.
I await your quick, snappy, ill-considered, stupid reply.

Yes, appeasement by Chamberlain. But that is not the topic of discussion. The topic is US nullification of democracy in Chile.
State Dept documents expressed worry over Allende's "intelligent Marxism." He was, by all accounts, moderate in his outlook.
So, a Marxist Allende was removed from power & replaced with the fascist Pinochet.
And we fought WW2 against WHAT ideology exactly?
The resonance of your idiocy makes my head swirl.
