  • Great tut!

Only 1 question. I have done everything perfectly went through double checked and everything, but I get a error saying cant connect to computer. My firewall is off and I opened DMZ even on router. Its like it wont even find the pc. I can ping IP just fine. Any Ideas? Thank You!

  • or you can use Logmein or Teamviewer - Go to my PC VNC

  • I get all the way to the login box and I know the login but it kicks me out when I try to login.

  • and how do i know my user name and password? thank you

  • @jorgehn7 Default username and password for the router? Well it depends on the make and mode of the router or if you've changed it before. Whatever router you have you can google search for default username and password for that router. If you have linksys, mostly both username and password is admin. Now, if the default info has been changed then you can hit reset button on the router which will change your username, password including your SSID and wieless password to default.

  • Hi nepalinazeer, I just noticed in ur video that u showed how to set it on both netgear and linksys, so how about in D-Link? I'm a little confuse where to put the 3389 coz it has different sets when I go to Advanced tab > Port forwarding? There's no start and end box there. Only "name, tcp, udp & ip address" have a box where u could enter a data, please help. Thanks in advance.

  • @MrLogoMANNYger Well I personally haven't tried this in D-Link Router but I watched a video on youtube and it should not be that bad. So here you go:

Name = Any Name (eg. Remote Desktop)

IP = 192.168.1.5 (or computer ip to be remote desktoped)

    TCP = 3389 --> Schedule = Always

UPD = 3389 --> Inbound Filter (Allow All)

** Remote desktop only uses TCP so actually you should be able to get away without UDP.

This is the video I watched: watch?v=b1LIkQUr0_Q

  • @nepalinazeer Thanks for your time, I appreciate it, by the way I think the link that you posted earlier about the video you watched is the same link as this video.

  • @MrLogoMANNYger :) Sorry, I had that video open on other tab and by mistake I copied link to my own video.

  • @nepalinazeer in ur tutorial, IP 192.168.1.105 <-- is this the IPv4 address of the computer that would like to access to other computers? What would be the setting that I need to set to the router of the computer that would like to access to other computers? Thanks again.

  • @MrLogoMANNYger Well port forwarding should be done for the computer that you want to access. So for that you go to the router on which that computer is connected and forward port 3389 to the computer's ip. Don't forget to enable remote desktop on that computer. Now on the computer that you want to access others computers from all you have to do is run remote desktop client and start typing staticip:3389. No configurations needed on router.

  • What if you have no router?

  • cool

  • i did google for this

  • Thanks very much for this tutorial, very helpful. Just a couple of questions please:

If you set the host router to a static IP, will the internet still work? Where do I get the info (static IP, default gateway, etc) from? My ISP is Knology. Thank you!

  • @SamAndrew27 Well u have to use default static ip from your isp and i believe you cannot change it yourself otherwise your internet will not work. to get your ISP's static ip u go to whatismyip . com. That's your internet's ip. then to get your pc's ip (ipv4), default getway and stuffs, you type in ipconfig in command prompt.

your ISP's ip is static but ip assigned to your pc could be either static/dynamic and can be switched around.

  • Hi Najir. I've been trying to set up remote desktop between my computer and my laptop (not over the internet, but locally as a test) and i'm already having some problems. I am able to remotely control my laptop from my desktop, but could not do the same the other way around - meaning: I could not establish control of my desktop from my laptop. I've set up a test user account with a password but i got nothing. Any ideas on where to look now?

  • @factionxvt408x Well to do this thing locally it should have been really simple and it looks like you knew what you were doing. For your problem, what I can think of is, some version of windows I believe just has remote desktop out feature. I wonder if this is your case. Did you try to connect just with the pc's IP without username and password. If you could see log on screen this way, then you might me entering your log on credentials wrong. I hope this helps. Is RDP enabled?

  • @nepalinazeer

Thank You for your prompt reply. I have managed to connect the two computers and found out the problem was that the ip addresses kept changing. Though, upon connection I have found that the performance was not as I had expected. I wanted to bring the power of my desktop to my laptop so I can do 3d modeling around the house. I don't suppose you know of a solution that would enable me to use 3d graphics remotely without having to buy a desktop replacement? lol TY again

  • stop spitting on the mic please..

  • Hey, I am back for hopefully a quick question. For some reason The computer that I was obtaining access from got kicked off the internet so I had to reboot the modem, router and the computer. I also called my cable company to have them reset the modem from their side as well. Now I am not able to get into the computer, any thoughts why not? Would the IP's change when they were reset? THanks

  • @joeyconsidine I wonder if your static ip (ip provided by your isp) would change. Just check whatismyip . com, but your computer's local ip, which is dynamic, might have changed. So again just goto command prompt and type ipconfig. look for ipv4 and see if its different than the one you were using. If so just change the old ip to this new one. Even if you static ip (your isp's ip) has changed for some reason, you just repeat the same process you did last time all over again. should work.

  • I have figured it out. Thanks so much. It was a minor error. Thanks again. this was very helpful

  • I have logged into the computer to get teh IPv4 #, then gone to whatismyip for that #, what do I put into the netgear site when trying to forward the port? which number is that from waht I have given you? Then what is the number that I type in with my laptop which is the computer I will use to access the desktop with? I think this is the last things I need help with and am so close. thanks so much for your help

  • Do you have an email that I could use. I have many questions and cant put it all here./

  • nepalinazeer, Thanks so much for your help with this. I wish I had tried this out before I left the country. I have some computer savey but have never done this. I am in Brasil at the moment, and so it is difficult because I am trying to get my wife to set it up over the phone

  • I understand that you got the default gateway IP which is the router, and then you have the IP as well for what you found. but then when you go into your router to setup the forwarding I dont see where you get the 192.168.1.105 ??? where did you get the 105? is that the IP from the computer that wants to access your other computer?

  • @joeyconsidine 192.168.1.105 is my computers dynamic ip. This is the IP that identifies my computer. I got this with ipconfig command in DOS. but the IP I got from the website is my network's static ip. This identifies my network. so if you were to connect remotely to one of your computer, you would have to write your

static ip:3389 as computer name. followed by user name and password and 3389 will be forwarded to your computer's dynamic ip. This is why we did port forwarding.

  • am I also understanding this correctly, that if for my purpose if i want to be able to access my desktop computer then i need to get the IP address from that computer and the router information and go into that router in the forward port to put in that computers info, or the info of the computer that I will be accessing from (my laptop)? thanks for the help

  • @joeyconsidine yes.. but this tutorial is for remote connection over internet and you would have to do that to connect remotely but if both of your desktop and laptop are connected to same network at you home, then all you have to do is enable remote desktop in both computers, type in the computer's IP that you want to connect to (not your internet's static ip but the one you got from ipconfig command) followed by username and password. As easy as that.

  • @nepalinazeer I am using over the internet. I am currently in brasil with my laptop, and trying to get my wife to set it up with me on my desktop in the US.

  • Also if I heard correct I need to make it so when i start the computer I have to be asked to have a password to login correct?

  • @joeyconsidine Yes, correct .. for security reason ... so when you fire remote desktop it will ask you for the ip address (or computer name) followed by username and password of the user for that computer you want to connect to.

  • @nepalinazeer ::For your response here i would put in the IP address that I got for the computer that I am trying to access that IP address from the website (what is myip). Then the next part for username and passsword can I have only one login password? for instance there is no guest account for my dekstop only the admin with a password that I just set up. so when i login with remote desktop i do ip and port of the desktop, then it says my username for laptop and then i do password right?

  • @joeyconsidine assuming that you have successfully forwarded port 3389.. lets say this is your ip from whatismyip "44.546.78.09" and this is your ipv4 192.168.1.109 so this is what you would do

    computer: 44.546.78.09:3389

username: Administrator (assuming you want to log in to admins account.. but can be any user account)

password: ********** (you know your password)

or at first you just do computer and username and it will prompt you for the password

  • @nepalinazeer ok. i bellieve i understand this, but what is the ip that i use to be fowarded? i have the desktop computer IPv4, also the DG IP and the whatismyip# as well. which of these numbers do I put in the router info along with the port 3389? this is the last step I believe i am missing. Do I need another IP to be used or one of those 3?

  • @joeyconsidine since you are trying to connect to the desktop, you will have to use desktop's ipv4 (you will be doing port forwarding part from your desktop because you want to connect to the network that the desktop is connected to) so when you try to connect to that desktop via your laptop, port 3389 will listen your remote desktop query and if the log in information you provided is correct it will connect it to that desktop.

  • Hey, I was wondering where do you know what port we are doing. I am uising windows 7 pro on both my laptop and desktop. also at both locations where each computers are at I am using a netgear wirless modem. do we choose the port ourselves or what? thanks

  • @joeyconsidine well, the thing is, the default listening port for remote desktop is 3389. So for both of your computers you can forward this port number to your computer's ip. This way when you try to remote log in to one of the computer via other, this port will listen and connect to the the computer with IP that it has been forwarded to. That being said, 3389 is just a default port. if you want to change it, just do a google search on how to do it. Its easy.

  • Great video dude, thanks!

  • I have a windows 7 machine at home & i want to connect remotely to my windows server 2003 machine at work via internet. Do i follow the same steps or do i have to do something different?

  • ok i did this to my router and used my public ip but my isp uses motorola canopy wireless broadband and its just like another router on my network so the connection comes threw canopy isp router to my wireless router do i gotta port forward on both cause i dont know the pass to my isp`s router help also would it have anything to do with my domain controller server 2008

  • For the Port forwarding, do you need to input your computer's IP address in when you remotely connect from one place to another? I'm planning to buy another Windows 7 Pro installation DVD so that I can have clients in my house, except I'm going to take one of the laptops in my Managing a MS Windows Server class Tuesday afternoon so that I can do maintenance on my server or just to send files to my server. My server OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition x64
