Actually, having your firearm in a bag or, as is the case usually for the Norwegian police, in a safe in your car, can make a world of difference. The time that it takes you to find your firearm in a bag, or run back to your car to get it can mean the difference between life and death for you and the people around you in case of a thread. In this case, it is actually true that many people do show adverse feelings towards the US, and may pose a threat to the people celebrating here.

What provokes me about this is not the fact that they're wearing weapons, it's that they're wearing weapons "on order" from th US that ticks me.
I'm in Heime Vernet (norwegian National Guard(closest I can get)), and when we do an exercise we walk among sivilians with AG-3 (G-3 for the rest of the world). But then again we train on not being intimidating talking to the public.
Norwegian police pride them self on their intimedating ways.
NO cops over 50 are usually very courteous and polite.

If it is close to the US embassy the Police officers are armed. On a normal patrol, the guns are locked down in a safebox in their cars. So this is a rare sight in Norway..

It might not be anything wrong with police carrying guns where you come from, but here in Norway they dont normally do that. They have it in their car and dont take it out unless the central has given an orden for it or they are in fear of their life.

yeah i thought that the police only carried weapons on weary specific accation, and that they seldom carry it on them, usealy they might have it in a car or at the police station.
allthoug if you go to the castle or at akershus you will see young soldier carry AG3 around so its not that we dont see guns from time to time, its just unuseally for the police to have them on body.

Who cares. Nothing wrong with policemen carrying their service weapon on the hip. That's how they do it in the Netherlands too. I've seen policemen do that since I was a child, and I think I turned out pretty well.
Really, nothing wrong with that, the police is there to protect the civilians, that's their job. And carrying a handgun is part of that. Be glad they're there.
