Love this band, it really helped me get out of religion and think for myself. Even when all the reasons not to believe are laid out in front of you, you still cling to what you've been brought up to believe, the desperation and inability to find yourself really is moving.
Really stoked that they've recently gotten back together too :')
I love the man concept when you think about each album as a whole, in the first he was a faithful man, then each one after it seems his faith dissolved and he questions it.
gosh i listened to so much secular indie music and i finally found this only band that plays indie and is christian.. Thank God.. too bad they broke up :(
@MarkSwags Actually this is a Christian band, seeing as they were at Cornerstone Festival (a Christian music festival) and reached #5 in the Christian charts with Come Now Sleep.
no no, its a song about a another who is having a hard time coming to god. hearts are really our gods, we are truly alone etc etc....that is from the perspective of person 1. later the words ("did you have doors do close?") meaning did you still have things to shut out of your life before you can commit and also ("did you have clouds to stop his voice") meaning you weren't hearing him due to the doors you haven't closed and the other parts of life you were stuck in. =person 2
I'd disagree, I interpret 'god' that he refers to as the truth we each find independent on dogma and religion. By closing your doors, he means that you're closing your mind off to the possibility that the religious beliefs you were brought up with are wrong. The voice through the clouds is a metaphor for how the rest of the universe, which surrounds the earth, calls out to humanity to find out the truth for themselves.
A guy who expresses himself fluidly and powerfully while staying completely relatable and empathetic to those who listen to what he has to say? Who has talent and class and understanding?
@Jcale101 the song is obviously from the point of view of someone losing faith in god, but that doesn't mean its him. he's telling a story. one can not assume that a story teller is the focal point of the story, JK Rolling isn't flying around on a broom catching shiny golden balls. and based upon many other ACB songs, he tells a lot of stories from the point of view of a skeptic. its easier to spread the word of god when you can make something that relates to people you want to reach.
wow guys I don't think theres any element of Codys faith being tested, what I get from it is that at this point in his life he realized that the world and life in general is too cruel for there to be a god so the only simple explanation is that there really is no god. That when you talk to god all you hear is the sound of you own voice "bouncing off the ceiling". listen to the rest of the album. I never detected any sense of a hidden message behind what he actually said.I think tooth and nail
Is there only one valid interpretation of a piece of art/music? Are you one to say his interpretation is meaningless/useless and/or objectively wrong? If they can back up their opinion with reasoning, does it become worthy? If the vocalist ascribed his intention for the album, would that rule out any alternative explanations/interpretations as being of no use?
(doors that close)<<<<< i think hes asking why are we bein judged, cant we make it to heaven no matter how we are? or maybe thats what it makes me think. (clouds to stop his voice) maybe asking/or makin excuse to why we cant always be righteous
I think this song was written when it was a tragic period of his lifetime *His friend's suicide who wasn't saved* and he was asking why heaven has doors to close, and he said this can't be, and he was just asking God why? It was a tragic moment in his life where he felt God was far from him but really God was always with him.
This is an amazing song, Possibly one of the best bands ever. These are amazing guys and truely talented musicans. And every time i qestioned my faith they made me think, wow.
to all who don't know: this entire cd (come now sleep) was written in remembrance of the band's friend Timothy Jordan. He committed suicide and towards the end of his life he started doubting God. This song was written in his perspective of where God really was. Timothy, the last song on the cd, was written to show their feelings toward his death.
Not sure, I might be wrong, but the last part where he saids "Take a look around... If there is a god he must be asleep" Saying if there was a god, the world wouldn't be so shitty, so he must be asleep since the world isnt getting any better. .
Now that I think about it, I don't think it was written from Cody's perspective, but possibly from a friend's perspective or just a character in the song. :)
@tubheadtrevor there could be, we have free will, its up to you if you believe there is or not. thats what god wants from us, to believe he exists, not just know he exists.
im sorry but i re-read ur statement and it seems u would have to rephrase ur sentence. God yes does know everything but that doesnt mean he makes us choose or forces events in our lives. if that were the case we wouldnt have choice..things would be way different and omnipotent means all powerful ominscient is all knowing. God is way complex he does not view time as we do He is beyond our natural laws since He created this world. well if you believe He did, but thats just my belief. :)
@davidEacost Yes it does, since choice requires two POSSIBLE outcomes to pick, if there is only ONE (since it's predetermined), there's the illusion of choice, but people doing things are just acting on what was predetermined, there would only be one possible set of events for the universe to follow.
@TheTerrorUforgot I like your comment. I know this is a Christian band, and I'm rather against the idea of one God existing; but this song tempts that belief, makes me wonder, makes me think outside the box.
