This is way too disciplined for a strip the willow - when we had german exchange sutdents over it was great fun trying to teach them this at our ceilidh :L - but yes this is exhausting and SO MUCH FUN
I always like the one where we put 4 sets in a cross, and have each top couple gallop to the bottom of the opposite set at once before stripping & casting. Very violent. Very fun.
this is nothing like the real world! at a school ceilidh all the boys want the girls to go flying about all over the place and its totally exhausting cos we go twice this fast. so much fun though x
Well if people learnt it this way they could cope with any other version. I was at a wedding dance the night before last and we had a gallop and crash mixed standard and orcadian version - what a laugh...!
I'm sorry but being raised n an island off the west coast of Scotland this is no the way we did strip the Willow !! This is wrong and far too clinical for a proper dance!!
Being raised in the Highlands of Scotland I agree with you, I'm scottish and have been taught these dances since I could go to school. It's a full link of the arms and cross over both when turning around on the spot.
would this person please post other videos? This was different than remembered but seems like maybe I forgot. Please post more dances with good explanations and views! Others are hard to decipher and see. Good job!
Odd ? Like the commentary says, danced with 4 beats per swing (turn) as here, it takes 40 bars; 8 beats (the way I learned in Perthshire) and it's 56 bars altogether.
Sure it is. I'm sure there are probably different regional versions and permutations of it, but this is EXACTLY how I learned it at ceilidhs at the Longs Peak Festival and Rocky Mt. Highland Games back in the early 80's.
This never failed to do my head in. I got lost halfway through...

We usually circle for sixteen at the beginning.. But then, we usually dance quicker and a bit more, well... childishly. :P

Strip The Willow, in reality, is one of the most exhausting dances you will ever partake in.

This is very confusing when drunk - you end up twirling all the wrong people...

Ah, we use much more energy at school dances. And the arm hold we use is a lot different, with dancers linking the whole arm with one another.
bubblewrapbump 2 years ago
That;s because the linking arms is the right way to do it :)

This isnt the proper strip the willow. Not enough movement
