@Sileni At least you can use the method where you paint a solid layer, grey for example, where you want the colors go and then create a new layer on top of that and then CTRL+ALT+G to group it so that you are only able to paint on the pixels that are colored in the solid grey layer. It's similar in a way to "lock pixels" but on a new layer on top of the base color layer (not the background). I hope this helps and if you already knew this trick, then ignore this :D
got inspired by this and made myself a zombie knight. as youtube won't let me put the link to the wip, i can only say you can find it at jugger017 (dot) deviantart (dot) com. comments and critiques are well appreciated, i'm still a huge rookie in shading and such, but at least i can recognize my mistakes. take a look if u guys want.
Nice...This is def one of the more informative speed paintings...I'm not gonna say tutorials because there are some guys who will take you through a small portion of the process step by step...but this one was fast, got a lot done quickly, but didn't move so fast that it was hard to tell what was going on. Best part was that your layers were showing. Some people don't display their layers panel in their vids and that's confusing cuz it creates a false sense of using just 1 layer.
i left painter and went back to photoshop. from now on im gonna stick to photoshop and learn to do everything i need there.
painter 12 especially is a nightmare. it crashed on me 6 times in 2 days. 3 times in the last hour alone. then i simply deleted it from the harddisk.
cant work with such shit.
...and Wacom for some reason try to protect painter, and say they dont understand what the problem is. shame on u Wacom! u know painter is not stable.
Is there a reason why you should mask it manually instead of just using magic wand outside the drawing then inverse and contract 1-2 pixels? Since the purpose is to get a presentable drawing fast i think it would be better to use that method.
so many lessons learned here!!! wow!!! I've been doing this for a few years but am self taught with digital (went to school for art but it was pens and paper)
One question... how are you switching between Photoshop & Painter? Are you saving it in Painter then opening it in Photoshop and saving it there as well each time you do a save?
Thanks again for these awesome tutorials. I also like hearing how productions studios work. Now I know a little more how to work with 3D modellers.
Can anyone explain to me how he is able to make the mask so that when painting/shading he doesn't go outside the character's body lines? I have spent hours trying to figure this out and the only thing I can come up with is "lock transparent pixels" which is not what he does in this video as he paints on different layers. It doesn't look like he's using a quick mask either. So how is he able to paint on multiple layers but so that he only stays inside the lines? thanks!
@MakoHazard Also, is there a reason that the layer names are in bold when he selects them? Mine don't look like that unless I have the "quick mask" turned on.
I really like your linedrawings never seen it in your earlier episodes. Nice job and continue to show ous new stuff. I love your design keep the good work up! / Finndahl
Hehe, I guess those of you who actually paint/draw, lol'd at the end when FZ needed few moments to complete the piece, after the first time he said vid is over :D Just like artists who are about to finish the picture but at the end they see another small detail to complete it :D:D
I was wondering when you draw a picture were you making the outline of the body in any shape or form to do it quickly you werent really trying to make it look perfect when you first started am I correct?
because it look like your were speed drawing to get a feel for how your characters were going to look like and be shaped and then you added the details afterwords making them look marvelous!
I'm asking this question because I'm trying to do my art work a bit faster.
@DoomFist94 asking a question is a point of avoiding assumptions....getting an answer however stupid one may assume a question is......however he made a video on refs and such...
@DoomFist94 before u make comments try to understand the meaning its not about being lazy or not getting of your ass *wrong spelling u made*.....its about the depth so do not asume that i am lazy.... or that i dont take my pics know the situation first before u assume.
Oh and I was wondering about the way you manual cleaned up the base color by deleting all the areas that were outside the lines. Couldn`t you just go to the line layer and select the outside area and then go to the color layer and use control x to delete it all at once?
thanks again for the tutorial Feng... I'm trying to figure out some basic stuff...
Could you please tell us which hotkey do you use for undo in photoshop...
Also, in portfolio prep video, in the second exercise where you said about painting shapes using only colour, you suggested to try and paint it in one or two layers, which I found it quite impossible... (colours do not stack after some brush strokes) Am I doing something wrong?
I see alot of people asking for the type of brush that you used for the linework. You mentioned that it was from painter 4 with certain preferences. Would you mind telling us what brush/ preferences you used? I would really like to try it out. It would be greatly appriciated if you do!
