He doesnt just randomly hack at the drums as hard as he can or "throw a bunch of singles down on a massive kit," he has rudimental knowledge that allows him to play fills or other beats in complex rhythms. Thats how he can play in the odd meters that most of rush's songs play in and still stay in time. His drum solos may be a little bland in some parts, but at least he adds percussion and jazz into them to make them more interesting
