A couple of interesting tidbits that I learned about Sarah at the zoo yesterday:

- Female cheetahs are generally faster than males. They evolved to be since they have to care for the young and cannot risk missed meals.

- The location in the video is the farm that the Zoo runs the cheetahs on for exercise. Her actual record-breaking run was done at the Kentucky Speedway.

I don't get it. Cheetahs are the fastest land animals. Period. These 100m sprint doesn't show anything. Greyhounds and race horses are clocked much faster on daily basis. 100m in 6.16s is 58.44kph. Horses can sustain that speed in distances over 2000m. Greyhounds have been clocked below 29 seconds over a distance of 515 metres, 64kph! (and that's running in a round track!)

@iapalategi This requires rapid acceleration though. You're taking the 100 meters and dividing it by the time...but you aren't factoring the in the necessary acceleration. She does not immediately run 60-70 miles per hour...a good section of the 100 meters is her speeding up. If a horse had to start from a standstill against a cheetah starting from a standstill the cheetah would blow the horse away...

Two things: first of all the humans do not keep the bait up at a constant speed so the cheetah could go faster. Secondly, how do we know this particular cheetah is particularly fast? As opposed to Usain Bolt of cheetahs, this could very well be the "me" of cheetahs, i.e. not very fast.

We haven't even begun to realise the speed potential of cheetahs or their application in bio-enforcement alongside the already commonplace gorilla police officers and giraffe fire fighters. God bless them.

@TomHasBC yes he is, .1 seconds faster for a human is an extremely hard thing to do. that's why it's been so long since anyone has broken the world record. bolt will reach a point where getting that .1 second difference will become impossible. 2 seconds faster is a huge difference in speed

okay, 75 miles per hour = 120675 meters per 3600 seconds = 33.52083 meters per second, so if 33.52083 meters(2.983219687579335)= 100 meters, then at 75 mph, a cheetah would travel 100 meters in 2.983219687579335 seconds, and don't tell me to get a life, cuz you're not the boss of me..... :(

Look at 4 seconds, the Cheetah slows down as it gets closer to the object and than they pull it away. I believe a Cheetah could run a 100m closer to 4 seconds. If a human can run at 9.5 with two legs at 30 mph and a 4 legged cat can run at 75mph than of course the time would be less than half of the human

@H1TMANactual Perhaps I was getting KPH & MPH mixed up. Although, Usain Bolt (World's Fastest Man) ran 37.6 KPH which is 23.36 MPH. The Cheetah can run 3 times faster than that and even accelerate much quicker than humans. I believe a more realistic test will see the Cheetah complete the 100M in under 4 seconds.

I think trying to calculate mph is not the way to go here. You would just be getting an average speed and not a top speed. For example.... if you take the Lamborghini Murcielago's 1/4 mile time of 12 seconds and calculate mph from that, you will get 75 mph... We know the cars top speed in that 1/4 was well over 75. It's 0-60 is 3.6!

She was at 1/2 speed considering the Cheetah has been clocked at 70+mph. In the video the cat slowed as she caught the rabbit. if the rabbit would have been faster I am sure she would have been too.

The cheetah wouldn't reach it's top speed until about 4 seconds into the run. your calculation is just an average speed. not a top speed.

the goal of the cheetah is to catch its target, not sprint as fast as she can... notice how she slows down when its target is getting close if she goes too fast she wont catch it, just like what happened in 0:26

Just ran the calculation, She was averaging 36.3 Mph. Cheetah's should be able to go nearly twice that fast. However, most of the speed runs done to test top speeds were done over a distance of 700 meters, not 100.

It's not a flawed calculation. I said in the initial comment that it was an average speed. This is the only kind of calculation that can be done given the availible data. Please keep in mind that most speed tests for cheetahs have been done for 700 meters, so this may well be the best a cheetah has done in 100 meters.
