Jussi Bjorling looks fine to me, rather resembles B. Gigli somewhat, but what does it matter? The voice is there and that's what makes the difference, true? His is a very 'angelic' type of voice, a pure sound. Have enjoyed all his recordings and the videos being presented here. Thank you, it's such a privilege to have these recordings preserved for us and the future generations who will look back on us a hundred years from now and still admire a fine singer.
There were about twenty super-great tenors in the 20th century. Caruso and perhaps Gigli in stand out in the early period against wonderfully talented singers. Yet, when many listen to Jussi B, they often rate him at least as highly. Truly wonderful.
What is amazing is how JB finds another gear to shift into and lets it air out at 2:32. The majesty and power of that note always send shivers up my spine. God, I wish I had heard him in person.
If some other tenor or soprano singer had problem with their high C, Jussi was always there to encourage, to help them, the colleague with advices.
I'm convinced that if Pavarotti (who had no problem with his high C at all) and Jussi have had the same age, they had been best friends. Respect for eachother. And Pavarotti as many other great singers were/are always helpful with advices too.
I am astonished to read some of these comments. Bjorling excelled in the Italian repertoire. The criteria of great singers does not depend on what the man in the street in Naples thinks. As regards Bjorling, he was a wonderful Manrico, Des Grieux and Rudolpho. His recordings of these roles are reckoned to be the gold standard by the important critics of the day. What is more important is that he is recognised by most to be the greatest tenor of the 20th century.
OK so he's not from Naples and he ain't an Italian but I love his voice (Amo la sua voce magnifico), Nobody ever sang the duet in Pearl Fishers (with Merril) nearly as well. I still choke up when I hear it.
NEAPOLITAN???? Goodness!! give me a break. Björling's tragedy, with alcoholism, was to be an Italian repertoire tenor without having any sense of Italian expression and feelings. It wasn't his fault: nature simply didn't give him this gift. He had his good voice, but as an Italian-type-tenor was a great failure and never had success in Italy. Neapolitan?? Oh, God: this was too much.
To be honest, in song he has lots of emotion feeling. He was on camera a very shy man and he used to get very nervous and this is why he was really cast on film alot and on stage he was quite stiff. But i respect your opinion obviously, just as I think franco corelli has an awful voice (sorry to Corelli fans) but anyway, maybe thise statement has made you understand why he 'lacked' emotion
Thanks por your friendly answer. I insist that Björling was absolutely against-type in italian repertoire and this was his greatest tragedy. With Corelli I don't agree with you because I think he had one of the most beautiful and biggest voice ever heard. His problem was his awful singing, plenty of vices. He wasted his excellent material in a lot of performances an recordings very badly sung. Björling, with a voice less interesting, sung much better.
I don't why then I prefer Bjorling singing Italian than Corellil. I think Jussi has an amazingly big voice (only person I have heard to sing Ah, Si Ben Mio and not take a breath before "Il, abraccio"!) I do think that Corelli has an amzginly powerful voice but maybe it's too much for me! I like a like bit of softness! lol Thanks for a nice discussion and not just an angered response! :D Message me if you wanna discuss more!
Jussi is so endearing to watch. And who the f*&^ thinks he's ugly, he just got chubby as he aged. Everyone looks worse with weight on. Look at his pics as a young man, he has beautiful delicate features and face. Even in looks I prefer Jussi's sweet, innocent, kind baby-face over all the harsh-faced tenors out there. That reminds me of the old korean saying)-- "you do as what you look like..."
Let me state that Jussi Bjoerling the favorite singer/tenor of my lifetime (85years). As much as I love him, and because many of the comments concern his face, I must comment tha I see a resemblance to Curley of "The Three Stooges." I don't consider this a put-down, as I consider Curley to be one of the greatest instinctive comics of all time, transending the Stooges. I don't consider Jussi Bjoerling to anything but handsome. To look like him and/or sing like him would be a great gift from God!
Dear gpoec, I agree with your comments and believe that Jessi Bjoerling's round, full face may have provided the space for the pure resonance for the quality of his voice. I read once that Barbara Streisand was contemplating nose surgery but was advised against it because the shape of her nose may have provided the resonance for the voice that was her specialty.
Dear bonnies, Thanks for your answer to my comment from 2 years ago. I always like it when people agree with my opinion. All the talk in the world wont change the beauty and artistry of Jussi Bjoerling's singing. However, there is often a bright side and a dark side to all of us. If you can find a book, written by his wife Anna Lisa Bjoerling, called "Jussi," you will see the price he paid for fame, and the pain it caused to others and those who loved him.
There should be a book by his wife, Anna Lisa. I'll check on-line. I would love to read about him. Yes, singers can be a handful. I used to sing and it is a big job to interpretate the arias or songs in the manner intended. Yes, the temperment of the artist. It's good to read about the artists here on YouTube. If I find a book, I'll let you know.
my father bumped in to bjorling in the mens room somewhere and said, i guess you get awful tired of hearing you re the best tenor that ever came down the pike, jussi said , well its always nice to hear.
What an extremely nasty thing to say. By no stretch of the imagination could Jussi Bjorling be described as "one of the ugliest men in the world". Beauty is only skin deep. If making stupid remarks about someone's personal appearance is all you are capable of then you would be better off keeping your opinions to yourself - and you need to learn to spell and punctuate as well.
Apologies for a typing slip (clearly a slip and not an error of spelling - as I can spell, I just can't type too well). In any event, I do not think I was being nasty, simply objective. I am not the only one to suggest that despite his physical appearance and acting (have you seen him in La Boheme with Tebaldi?) he managed to create (with the voice) such a presence. "Beauty is only skin deep" is exactly what I meant. This is a wonderful voice and Bjorling a great artist.
We forgive you and accept your apology. Please in future show more respect for one so loved and adored by so many of us worldwide. We cherish all that was our heroic tenor Jussi Bjorling. He is loved and missed by so many of us,and to us he was very beautiful-and in so many ways.
I don't think he is ugly, he just has a certain form of his face. Also how do the way he look matter, it don't, maybe you are jelouse and trying to put him down?, anyway plz don't reply ...
Bjorling used to go to Cuba, to sing in the opera theater, and the night before, many times, he was found all drunk in the bars, he liked ron!! one of the greatest tenors ever!
so beautiful is his voice that i get the shivers.
