Not just that he's there: He is a teacher of wisdom, not just to Luke but to the audience. There is mythology mixed up in The Empire Strikes Back. The prequels are nothing more than action stories told too quickly so as to show the back story of Darth Vader.
@Joobs0917 Yoda is or has been everyones teacher at some point when they come to the academy. In Episode 3 (can't believe I am actually referencing the Prequels) Yoda is teaching the younglings. He also mentions in Empire Strikes Back that he has been training Jedi for almost 900 years.
It can be surmised that before Padawans are issued to a master for training that Yoda will start their training.
So Qui Gonn was Obi Wan's Master. but so was Yoda. Hope this clears it up.
one thing that makes this so much better than yoda in EP I II III is the fact that he is actaully there, not just CGI. it makes it look so much better. CGI can never replace a great puppet and a master puppeteer.

Is this a continuity error since Qui Gonn instructed Obi Wan or was Yoda Obi Wan's instructor?

yeah but the puppet cant fight with a light saber. the cgi is wat made yoda badass and makes everyone fear to go up against him
