Shelby Steele like Thomas Sowell have to be one of our Countries top Intellectuals, and this isn't because they are black. Being black just gives them an added prespective to our society
Do most you who consistently criticize Sharpton and Jackson for race baiting, realize that this is exactly what Steele is doing. However there are two big differences between those two and Steele. They love their people, and they couldnt exist in a vacuum. Yet Shelby Steele seems to revel is a state of quisling.
Black people are better of acknowledging racism and discrimination but keep moving forward and improving are selves. To ignore it would be deceiving ourselves and very dangerous. That would be like stepping off of a cliff and ignoring the fall. Shelby you idiot.
This Shelby clown is basically telling black people to ignore something that they dont control and effects them everyday of there lives. Literally smacks them in there face and excludes them form access to opportunities. and Shelby wants blacks to ignore it, and focus on what Shelby. Because when I do focus on my shelf and self employment then I have to go out in the world and get a job and try to survive. and that is when discrimination and racism smacks you right in the face Shelby.
Shelby acts like institutional racism and discrimination doesnt have an effect on black people. Nonsense all he has to do is look at the United Nations stats on race in America and he will find out that discrimination is still affecting black people more then ever. The hell with his theory's look at the stats Shelby listen to the researchers and black people. Even researchers and activist like Tim Wise here on youtube, would school this guy Shelby on the truth. This Shelby guy is ridiculous.
@iratetruth Institutional racism?...What a joke...Fools like you are the reason that these corporations are avoiding lawsuits with these rediculous 'diversity training' courses...I wish you were in range so I could slap you...By the way, Time Wise wouldn't school anybody...He's not that impressive, although his delivery is...You can't see past that...He's just another race capitalist and you're a customer...Oh well, there will always be ignoramuses like you, and as an adult it's no use to try.
Shelby Steele is right on point. Racism is not going anywhere. More blacks need to stop worrying about how whites feel and start focusing on empowerment. The excuses made for blacks have gotten ridiculous. George Washington Carver himself said 99 % of failures come from people who make excuses. We should learn from men like Booker T. Washington who focused on empowerment. Steele of one of the modern day Washingtons. Unfortunately, Jackson, Farrakhan, and Sharpton are not.
As an african american, i love Shelby Steele. If more black people listened to this man, they would be fine. Assholes like Farrakhan, Sharpton, Jackson, and Michael Dyson just hurt the black community and they continue to do so.
Your not African American! What a joke, re-read this post carefully. he seapks from outside the group using words like "they" and "if more black people"
We all bear responsibility but what alot of white people see in society is blacks and especially black leaders blaming innocent, non racist white people for the negative behavior of black people who perceive themselves as victims and lash out with violence and destructive behavior.
That carries to what he has said before about affirmative action policies. He said it creates a culture of victim behavior in the black race. They have been taught that if they look more to their past rather than their present that it will be more lucrative for them.
He has some points on some things. But I hate him saying that white people do not bear some responsibility for learning to put down racist behavior as well as biases that they hold on too. This society isn't color blind yet. Why is he narrowing every black person's experience to his? I find the empowering parts of him quite intriguing but I don't like him totally dismissing that there aren't issues that face the black community. Real issues.
Let me just say this... I have never seen racism against any black person. Trust me, my eyes are open. I am very open minded and observant. I am the least racist person you may ever hear from. I have no reason to feel guilty for the relatively few ignorant people that cling to racism. I do my part by promoting justice and even mindedness. I believe that many people that even consider themselves racists are ignorantly reacting to social frustrations.
Shelby is so right on. Yes racist people exsist but no effort to keep minorities poor exist. It hurts the whole country when big chunks of the country are dirt poor and crime ridden.
Maybe because of comments like the one you just made.
Shelby Steele's message is not about Racism being over, but that Racism no longer has the authority to stunt the growth of a minority individual who takes advantages of the freedoms that this country offers. (Meaning earning an education, working, and embracing the individuality of themselves and not categorizing and/or limiting themselves based on the patterns of a group that he/she belongs to).
are u sure. so does it justify racism just because i bring it up. If racism didnt exist then there will be no need for me to talk about this, and quite frankly people would just ignore me. So even if I am keeping racism alive it doesent justify it.
Lol! First of all don't bring "white people" in it because I didn't. Not an inferiority problem, it could just be that I'm dumb like I've already stated. It was just weird because I've read his book, and it seemed like he was an extremely intelligent person due to his use of vocabulary. But now that I'm hearing him talk he doesn't use that type of vocabulary he used in his book.
and finally, he cannot explain his own success beyong providing white and black conservatives validation and confirmation (and confort)about their own lack of social and political consciousness.
Steele has the backing of white conservatives, they bankroll him big time.
"As the first person commenting on this video, I have to say Steele is dead right on these issues of race. While I disagree politically with him on most non-race issues, (being a black left-leaning person myself) I think a lot of what people dismiss as "black conservatism" is just plain common sense."
I am reading "white guilt" right now. I'ts a great book and Shelby Steele is a great black man. If we had more Shelby's and fewer Al's, Jesse's, and fiddy's, we would be on a different path!
It really sucked. You can call me dumb, but I couldn't comprehend it. He goes out of way to show people he has a big vocabulary. But we definitely wouldn't be on a different path. I think the path were on is quite good.
All schools are not created equal but they should be. There are also disparities on high loan interests, mortgages, discrimination in the courtroom, that need to be addressed.
there doesn't need to be a standard bearer for the black community. Blacks are different. no one or two people (sharpton and jackson) can represent for millions of people. many people who face hardships (African-Americans during civil rights movement) are able to rise because they have no other choice. If blacks are 12-13% of the population they should be discussed 12-13 percent of the time in the classroom.
Dr. Steele gets a lot of flack from certain groups of people because he's taking away the excuse for failure due to "racism" and bigotry. Too often black elitists try to portray their success as an anomaly and give the impression that only a few "lucky" black people can achieve success. People like Dr. Steele believes that ANY black person can be success if they try. I agree with him.
But at the same time I don't think he would say that we live in a racist free society. In fact, I'd think he'd agree that many aspects of our society are still institutionally racist. The problem is will black people give others a chance by not assuming them racist or challenge them that they are racist until they satisfactorily prove they aren't.
Shelby Steele is liked by many racist Whites who don't want to feel guilty for the crimes they commited against Blacks since they were shipped to America.
When Shelby Steele says that we (blacks) are 90% responsible for keeping ourselves down, he's 100% correct. I see that victim mentality every day, and it's sickening.
there is a place for Jackson and Sharpton too. As much as we want people with his point of view to be heard, we don't want to silence those who oppose it.
I don't believe I suggested silencing anyone. We should do that ourselves by hearing then rejecting their false rhetoric. Let's just say that we should support those that empower us in our adversity rather than debilitate and debase.
He doesn't necessarily need to take over, the black people who do share a mentality of victimization just need to hear him out. He does make a lot of sense. By the way , I accidentally neg'd your comment oozealot while attempting to respond. Sorry.

There is NOBODY who deserves to be listened to with regards to racial issues more than this man.
I read Mr. Steele's book, 'White Guilt' over my vacation last week and found myself nodding in agreement his assessment of things.
Shelby Steele is a brilliant man. I'm glad he's there to offer a voice of thoughtful reason and reflection in a sea of televised demagoguery.

He puts forward a very convincing arguement to disregard white privilige as a historical and social reality.
Rugged individualism is easy Steele. He's not a black man and he's not a white man.
He's a very confused hybridisation of his own hopes and desires.
I feel sorry for him, I really do.
