I was there 5 years ago. On the ferry over I was lucky enough to meet Pte Walter Johnson, he was returning to the battery, he told me his blow by blow story of the day that he was there in 44. 2 days later I met him at the battery & he showed me around, what an honour it was to be in the predence of a real war hero in the place that could have killed him. He, like a million others probably does not think of himself as a "hero", just doing what had to be done he would probably say!
Im proud to say my dad was one of the men who attacked the battery, hes 85 now and will always be my hero. sadly 190 men of the 9th batt are still missing. R.I.P
I visited Merville again this year, and there is now a fully restored C47 plane that dropped troops over Normandy on display
The sad thing about the Gun battery is that out ot 750 paras that jumped only 150 survived the muster to attack it, out of those a further 75 were killed or injured
withing 24 hours the Gun battery was back in German hands and No3 Commando had to re take it, again with heavy casualties
those that fell undoubtedly saved many lives on the beaches by their sacrifice
i've been there but there was aloooooooooooooooot of ppl
on your pics is see almost no one?
i see that it was recorded in 2007 was that airborn plane already there or not
plz send a reaction back! thanks. Elie...

@Elieeeeboy
We've been there in august 2007, and there was still a lot under construction, and there was no plane or glider on the site.
