THIS IS INCOMPLETE, THIS INTERVIEW IS 30 MINUTES LONG, IT WAS AIRED ON MTV'S FAST FORWARD SEPTEMBER 18, 1983, 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO KISS MTV SPECIAL UNMASKING FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH JJ JACKSON...
BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST DAVID LEE ROTH INTERVIEWS EVER... AND YES LATER IN THE INTERVIEW, HE DIPS HIS SUNGLASSES, AND APOLOGIZES, AND SAYS HE IS FUCKED UP, YES TENSE (RECOVERING) FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE...
wasted? why? cuz he's being "cooky"...he seem more than straight to me. Maybe he smoked a joint.? So not wasted. ..ok, more I watch, maybe he is wasted.
Unfortunately, the 90's rolled around. Dave lost his hair and his voice. He went from stadium tours to shit clubs on the chitlin circuit, making $10,000 per night. He never made more than that until Sammy rescued him for the one joint tour.
As Van Halen is finished, I expect Dave's "career" is behind him.
@castletriglav neither dave or eddie have a future without eachother now but unless they get alittle better at PR it wont matter.you are right about the 90s and dave...after skyscraper he disappeared...lol
Here it is kids..After 35 years of rock!!..Dave will tell you more about the true psyhocosis of rock n roll than any man..Coke fuelled or ADD/Hyperative..He understoodstood how this fucked upt he machine actually works..Dave missed his true calling in life...and that is to be a true comedien..He could have matched Richard Pryor and even driven Rich to shoot him in the face for absolute honesty..This muthafucka is funny!!!!!!
It was Dave "the circus ringleader", alex's snare sound, Michael Anthony's backing vocals and Eddie's guitar innovation together...perfect storm. The singer was a comedian, gymnast, matial arts expert and could sing and dance and look great.
@bytebull Ed goes to the verse riff after 6 bars...not 8...Ed screwed up...not Dave...this time...lol! Ed sez "Did anyone ever notice that on 1984...the solo to Hot For Teacher is 13 bars long and not 12...I can't count...hahaha...we all landed on our feet and kept it on the record". Guitar Player Magazine
the ultimate rock band, a super guitar player with the best frontman ever, dave's party like attitude is what made the band so special, just listen for hot for teacher, or all of 1984 what a super album, hope there new one is just as good, i think it can be to, sammy was just not right for van halen
Even with Eddie's talent and innovativeness, Dave WAS THE BAND. The Van Hagar years were a time of mourning the loss of the greatest rock band front man ever!!!!! Dave's a genius!!!!!
He's not wasted, he's HUNG OVER. Quote Jack Black: "Today I'm hung over kids, do any of you know what that means?" Kid in the back: "It means you're drunk!" Jack Black: "No, it means that I was drunk...YESTERDAY."
As the years go by people will realize that besides Eddie's greatness on the guitar, Dave was the band's persona.....I loved Sammy during the 70's, but the bad boy persona disappeared when Dave was no longer with the band.
Compare the diff. from this interview to the one on June 12, 2006. What happened to him psycologicly. I think he was humbled somehow , gangraped or something as severe as that. He was an entertaining dude back then now he is just strange.
Hilarious, What a friend, he believes in his friend so much that even bets Bucks on him and lets him to fly out the window. o man now that’s what I call friendship. !!!!!!
@z1inspector, right on man. I'm tired of these idiots who claim that Dave is gay. It's just ridiculous considering he's probably the biggest ladies man of all time!
I bet Dave is high on nose candy. He'd come by while we was hangin out and getting torn up , Dave would come in and sit indian style in the corner and just snort straight out of the sandwich bag with one of those big fat straws you used to get. He'd do his 1/2 oz and then he'd be gone.................................................
VH came charging out of the bullpen at a good time for rock stars. at some point david could have dropped the shtick and conversed with people as an intellect but roth doesn't seem to be a thinker. he hides behind the chatter and he bores. his act was cute until about 1986. one interview he had with leeza gibbons he wore a silly hat and mentioned the popularity aspect of being a rock star--gone tomorrow was his implication but he was sticking with the shtick and outgrew his jive that day.
i recorded this on VHS in 1983 and watched it over and over until I memorized the entire thing. I still use his quotes every day "it is the music of the 80's, doug"
WANKER!. Great book but DLR is just way too fark up his own arse to ever even have a conversation with. The word wanker was invented for him. He's a FUCKWIT!
@drupa99 technicaly he isnt a van halen, he's a roth, but he practically apart of them, because: 1. he went on tour with Eddie, alex and wolfgang van halen, 2. MOST of van halens good songs were with him and 3. and all of the VH albums with him went diamond or (x2,3,4,5) platinum.
Your Damn right! There's not a lead singer in probably the last 30 years that personify all that is rock and roll like those two! Whether you love'em or hate'em you can't deny their charisma. I've seen them both live and they both rule!
i know 1 rock singer who is just as much a rock n' roll summary and who is modern... Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach. especially snce they ebcame rock not rap. he is a great frontman and keeps the shows going...
Holy shit, a James Honeyman-Scott reference! I haven't heard that name in years. If they were out, they were up to no good. Honeyman-Scott didn't make it to the 90s.
@Hunkola I'm still in stitches over the first time I ever saw this interview!! Every other interview from every other band/solo artist doesn't even come close to this!! The best writers in the movie biz can't come up with Diamond Dave's comments!! CLASSIC!!
Years ago I saw him open for Bad Company and it was the first time that I saw an opening band get a standing ovation. I left after his set. Didn't see Bad Co.
yeah im been meaning to read it. i wish he'd write a knew tell all book. nowadays he could really spill the beans like motley crue's whiskey book. when the ? comes up who'd u like to be if anyone. im always quick to say dlr. what a life he's lived, the biggest rock star of the 80's.
From the very good Van Halen book Everybody Wants Some (page 170):
Though Roth was not a candidate to win an award from Nancy Reagan, he had a healthy distrust of hard drugs. "Never did heroin, never took pills, downers or speed," he told Rolling Stone. "They kill your creativity and your spirit. Anyway, what's worse than drink and cocaine together is greed. Greed breeds egoism and sloth."
I wasn't expected much because I only got it to find out why Dave, Sam and Gary left.
I like the story about how Eddie met Nirvana. Priceless.
Strangely on the Amazon site, the book has been criticized for being derivative since it seemed to a lot of reviewers that the author didn't do much interviewing.
Granted, it's not an autobiography like Slash or M' Crue's The Dirt but it's still a very good book. Even Eddie said in the foreword that despite what others say, you should read the book.
I've not read Crazy from the Heat yet but I know it will end up being one of my favorite books if I did read it (hence why I added it to my books section on my profile over at MySpace).
Henry Rollins mentioned that DLR tends to be quite overlooked in regards to his intelligence. Coincidentally, Henry helped DLR with the book (he mentioned it on an online interview).
In the Everybody Wants Some book, it's mentioned that DLR first met Henry during one of his first visits to punk clubs.
