@Mr1SXM It's not. Martin claims to not have known much at all about heroin. Plus this song was recorded in 1989 for Violator, before Dave's problems spiraled.
@Mr1SXM uhhhh no. The song is about sexual seduction. I think its sexy as all hell. Without getting graphic, the beat pulls you in and the subtle lyrics suggest rocking someone's world. Thus, the world in my eyes.
I always remember the artistry and pageantry of their concerts, too. I remember the Music For Masses concert: the opening used immense Fog, immense Roman-style vexilla (flags on staves) with the loudspeaker symbol on them. Projected slides from history and art. It was loaded with pageantry and symbolism. It reminded me in style of a Nuremberg rally--for art design.
damn dave gahan gets so into it everytime he performs this song...im trying to find a concert clip of this song i saw a while ago. i cant find it...he was wearing purple...and he was really freaky lol when is he not? lol but i cant find it!
I love the intro to this song on the Faith and Devotion and Exotic tours. So amazing, best version of the song I ever heard. However, I did like hearing the live drums for this song on the P.T.A.T.
During this concert Dave was high as fuck, and they still managed to give a blow away of a show! I love them! Although it's hard to see Dave so fucked up as in this vid.. Don't get me wrong! They are the best! But during this period Dave was just not feeling so well and drugs made it even worse..
It was the "Devotional Tour" that showed the band in it's absolute best form. Every album and tour performance of the band prior to this one was a build up to and peaked at with the support of this album/tour we see hear...
and every album and tour that followed was a gradual decline from SOFAD.
I also think that this tour showed the band with it's "Coolest" look, style, and appearance. Too bad we have to get older!! xD
I disagree @sweetheartbreaker666. I saw their concert here in CA that same year. While the show was awesome, they seemed disjointed and a little all over the place. I think they've become wiser and more seasoned with all the work they've done in their personal and professional lives since this tour. Saw them in '01 too and it was all round much better!!!
Hi, just interested what you mean about Dave being 'creepy'now. And do you mean that now the stage they use is alot smaller? I have seen them many times, but I think the SOFAD Tour was incredible, perhaps it was more fascinating to watch Dave as you know how addicted he was to Heroin then, and it was also the last tour that Alan was with them. Dave was truly mesmorising then, and no his voice is not as good now 'live' and his dancing not as 'fantastic', but we all get older.
I think this particular mix was a mix by Alan and I believe it's only for the live Devotional version, the only one that sounds even close is the Mayhem mode mix. Dammit, I wish I knew if there was a replicated studio version. D:<
There is no name for this version..It was created for devotional tour..later used for summer and exotic tour in 1994....you can find it on a single IN YOUR ROOM together with live versions of policy of truth, fly on the windscreen and world in my eyes from devotional tour 1993 recorded live in Lievin - France......There is three versions of single In your room nd its on of them...check it out. Its really worth it.
con violator depeche mode fue implacable y dio la cara por el sinth pop ya que solo habia un new order desorganizado un erasure debil y krafwerk desaparecido de las demas bandas de sinth poop mejor ni hablamos en cualquier epoca violator de la vuelta a todos
It's amazing that Dave could get up on stage at this point and still rock the house. I guess the quality of their live shows was the silver lining on a very bleak period. I guess it made up for the disasterous things that were happening off-stage. Dave could still put on an amazing performance, but watching him here makes me kinda sad. He must weigh 100 lbs. He just looks so sick. But his voice is pure velvet, I'll give you that.
Ed Sullivan is rolling over in his grave thinking how could he have dealt with explaining Depoche to sponsors. Ha! The party lines in the country would have been lit up after such a performance!
The songs "The Bottom Line" and "Freestate" off Ultra, I beleive, are some of Martin's best lyrics ever. However, I still follow them because I love Martin's gift of lyrical expression; which is also a huge talent....
"Fletch wasn't even with them. his wife was pregnant" That's what Dave wanted you to believe....that Fletch left because of his wife. He was on the brink of a nervous breakdown and bailed. (Just like the rest of them) I saw the Summer Tour on 12 different nights. Best Shows Ever - even though the set was short. I don't listen to any DM past SOFAD. Wilder is key to this band's brillance.
heatfromstreets79...I thought Ultra was pretty good. And the last tour really was a good one. Alan Wilder is missed big time I agree but I still am glad they didn't just stop.
I agree. Ultra was an amazing album and they are still put on the best live show you'll see. I'd rather have DM continue without Alan than just throw in the towel and say "Woe is me."
Not because Dave wanted to be the band closer together was the set different from the european one but because of the financial aspect and moving the whole set around so much during the american leg of the tour. Watch Anton Corbijn on the Devotional DVD in the extras section...
I agree that they were amazing during this time, but I believe that Dave also brought his A game on the Singles Tour.. After cleaning up, he was out to prove himself because it represented a new beginning for him. He was BA at 31/32 as well as 36 years. Yes, the Faith and Devotion Tour was the shiznet and there will never be another like it!!
You can say the Devotional Tour was split into two parts.. the first part took place during 1993 and was called the Devotional Tour in which you saw all thirteen or so of those screens. During 1994, the second half, it was split into two sub-tours called The Exotic Tour and the Summer Tour.
yep, yep. the second half of the tour Fletch wasn't even with them. his wife was pregnant, so he left and Daryl Bamonte(yes Perry's brother) DM's touring manager filled in for Fletch's very minimal keyboard duties.
(second half of my message:) For these tours, the stage was smaller and there was only one big screen similar to the World Violation and Exciter tours. Dave wanted a smaller setup for 1994 because he wanted the band to be close together during live shows.
@tsfella Anton Corbjin said it was because it was simply too expensive to take all that stage around the world so he was asked to simplify it to cut costs

The songs "The Bottom Line" and "Freestate" off Ultra, I beleive, are some of Martin's best lyrics ever. Too bad Alan wasn't around to ensure the musical mood and sound matched the beauty and depth of Martin's words. I wish that the other band memebers, particularly Martin and Fletch, had been more appreciative publicly and privately of Alan's talent and hard work.

The last three songs on Ultra, IMO, is the best closing run out of all the DM albums.
