With tax & fees, cost a little over $20K to drive it off the lot. The car's most valid criticism is probably that it is too expensive for what you get.
But I've never had so much fun with any other car!! It's fun to drive. The reaction from other people is a hoot!

The Smart Car is not beneficial to the environment at all. because of its size, the economy package aka the exhaust filter is non existent. Without the economy package the car is unable to filter the gas, therefore the gas that it produces is so unclean that the car has been all but disallowed in ecological countries such as Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden and even in California.

If you look for the video here on youtube where they crash one at 70mph, the cars windshield is intact and the doors open, BUT the leg area was completly compromised. I don't want a car that may make me an amputee in a car crash thank you very much.

AWSOME cars these smarts. I had one with those same wheels on it in Australia until 3 weeks ago when I fell asleep at the wheel at 3.30am went off the road and hit a tree head on doing 60kmh which is about 40mph. These smart cars are SOOO safe. I got out out of the car with minor whip lash to my back. The tree didn't even intrude the car and the windscreen was barely damaged. Amazing. I can't wait till these new 2007 models hit Australia, i'm getting another one for sure.
