Hey conkyjoe. Where did you get this video..."chuck stewart presents classic music videos?" I would love to get a complete copy of this video...Can't find it anywhere on the internet!
Google won't let me vote up, but I just want to second your comment about Dickey in the band, and the incredible Gregg Allman IS the best white blues singer ever!
Never saw this video before. Wish they'd just played the whole thing without edits. Something about seeing this w/Dickie in there that legitimizes it for me more so than say hearing it without him. Duane & Dickie together were IT. Warren & Derek are fine, but they don't move my soul like D&D did. Thought Dickie saved everyones bacon after Duane & then Berry died, but I also felt he'd lost something over the years. IMO, DWYNM into INMCTB was the ABB Holy grail. Still think so, too.
@texas9085 Or that NOLA brown! Either way, you are so spot on! As soon as I saw Greg and Dickey's face, I knew exactly what was going on! Hell, I even got a little warm inside myself!
@impala327 That Gold Top was on E-Bay a year ago. An old friend of Dickie's was selling it to raise money for some good cause. It was pulled off before it reached $125.000.00 That Gold top was what Dickey used to record most of the Brothers and Sisters album including Ramblin Man, and SouthBound. What Tone he has!! Truth be told though, the Tone tone is in His playing style,His vibrato, his attack with the pick, and his fretting hand. This is the Shit...too bad the Vid was chopped up
to those who say there is no allmans without dickey, you obviousl havnt seen them with trucks and haynes , yes its different, no better nor worse just different, the shows are pretty epic, regardless of what you call the band the talent soars when you see them perform, haynes and trucks are guitar gods of our day and age, all eras of any great bnd like abb are awsome
@123daydream321 You got that wrong buddy. You clearly never saw the original band really cooking. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are good but they are NOT in the same league with Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. All you have to do is listen to Fillmore East or Eat a Peach or Dickey's solo on Jelly, Jelly on Brothers and Sisters and it is CLEAR Warren and Derek are but fill or tribute guitar players trying to give the Duane/Dickey vibe. They come close but to DON"T match the original guys. Nope.
@boblackey1 I appreciate the loyalty to the original lineup, but I think this opinion is rooted in nostalgia as much as it is in fact. The original lineup was something remarkable, but the current lineup kicks a lot of ass.
@nlandess I could get into the new lineup IF they didn't call it the Allman Brothers Band. It certainly doesn't sound like the Allman Brothers Band to me unless they are doing the old stuff and Warren and Derek are throwing in some Duane or Dickey licks, but then why do they do that? It makes it sound like a tribute band. It was just easier to handle the lineups with Dickey in the band. You knew Duane and Oakely are dead and can't be there and Chuck or Warren or Toler are filling the void.
warren and derek are world class players, but the ABB suck without Dickey and it's really not up for debate. 1 studio album in the 10 years since booting Dickey speaks for itself. If you enjoy watching 2 talented guys cover Dickeys music so they can make a good living go have fun.
@beersplease the band almost broke up. Gregg and Butch were going to quit due to Dickey, but when they found out from their wives that the other was going to leave the band, Butch called Gregg and they got Jaimoe on the phone and said "you vote with us to sack Dickey or we will quit". Originally Jaimoe would only agree to doing the summer 2000 tour without Dickey. Dickey sued and that was that. Gregg later said if Warren had not come back to replace Dickey the ABB would have folded.
Actually, the current band does play some of Dickey's songs. There is this thing called publishing, and he gets paid when they play his tunes. They are all great guitarists, but the family has to carry on.
Awesome, The current ABB are playing near me this week and I have ZERO reason to see them without Dickey. Just a dull show with out the leader and main writer of the band. being booted for almost 10 years.
sorry bro, I've seen them several times without Dickey and there's no spark.I'm a huge fan of warren and derek, but the fact is they have put out a total of 1 studio album since booting dickey. If I was younger and didn't know any better I might think the current ABB are the best live band out there. and fact is any band with warren and derek are going to blow away 99% of the live bands out there. but for me, they sound more like a revival act.
well, that's cool bro...I respect your opinion and I understand what you're saying. I think Dickie Betts has always been underrated and I do miss him with the ABB....
I agree...and before all the self-righteous assclowns jump on me...I realize that Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes are wonderful players...I just feel that they are now an Allman Brothers tribute band.
I have to agree that ABB is just not the same without Dickey. I don't know if tribute band is the right word; I think "The Gregg Allman Band" would be more appropriate. The thing I loved so much about the ABB was you had Dickey's country influence collaborating with Gregg's blues--simply incredible. I realize I may get a lot of negative feedback for this but (this may be a generational thing--I'm 22) but I honestly think the lineup in this video was the best ABB lineup ever.
I'm not saying that it's the most talented lineup; if Dwayne isn't in the lineup, then that automatically excludes it as the best lineup. However, I think this lineup made the best music; the just played so well together. Dickey and Warren worked off of one another, Allen Woody was the only bassist they had since Berry Oakley (not literally, obviously).
Finally, I want to hear your opinions. I used to be crazy about Dickey Betts and Great Southern (keep in mind I'm only 22. While I've heard all their albums, the first time I saw them live was like 2003 or 2004). Recently I've come to the conclusion that they suck. Dickey is is simply not what he once was and he surrounds himself with untalented musicians. I've noticed he goes off on these long, boring intros and conclusions. Finally I realized that what he's playing are what used to be his
incredible solos that lasted 10-15 minutes (as can be heard on Än Evening With the ABB 1st Set and 2nd Set). I think Dickey's still got a lot of talent in him and if he were to actually surround himself with some talented musicians they might bring out the youth in him again. But he hires the fucking garbage unheard of hired guns. Dickey, I know he's your kid and all, but he's just not good enough, at least not yet, to play on the same stage as you. Anyway, you don't even need 3 guitarists.
I have to somewhat disagree with you. I mean, I see the Country influence but, Liz Reed? Les Brers? Pegasus? Folks say he had the Country influence and I certainly see it but, listen to Gregg's "Laid Back" or some other Gregg tunes and you'll see that Dickey isn't the only one with that influence. Peace.
@tbird13936 I'm 62 (and wish I were 22 again like you-getting old sucks) and I agree to a point. The lineup on this video was the best since the original band. But the original band was THE best. All the guys were in their 20's and had such energy and drive to make the band a success. Then Duane got killed. This lineup was similar as they were trying to make the band a success again after the Dan Toler/Rook Goldflies version was panned by critics for not having the soul and spirit of the ABB.
@tbird13936 Yeah I think "tribute" band can be used. Warren and Derek actually, to me, show what they can really do in their own bands. In recent years in the ABB, especially on the old songs, we are seeing (hearing) replacement players thowing in lots of Duane and Dickey licks into their own styles rather than playing the entire song in their own style. But Warren said that if he didn't do that, the songs would sound right to people who have heard them on the albums for years.
Was this at Telstar studios in Sarasota? Thought I saw Dan Toler standing in the back between Warren & Dickey at 2:08. It is great to see Dickey play when he knows he has something to prove. The man wrote a great piece of the book. Takes me back to see the young, spry Woody! Burgers and beers at the Hob-Nob!Thank YOU for posting this.
I have been listening to the Allman Brothers Band since the Brothers, and Sisters Album came out in 75. When I first found out that they lost Berry, and Duane I was immediately drawn to Duanes Guitar work on the earlier Albums. I Love Dickey to Death. Still when you hear the dual guitars of Duane, and Dickey riffing in 3rds of each other, NOTHING can beat it. The Dangerous Dan Era was Very Very Happening, and enlightened them to new Heights. Warren KILLS also, His Les Paul TONE is Devastating !
No, his name is not Dickey Allman. And BTW they're not, (and haven't been since 2000) permitted to play any of the songs Dickey wrote. As much as I respect Dickey for his outstanding playing, he fucked up. It seems to have worked out best for everyone involved however.
I love this song! I still can't get over how the band uncerimoniously dumped their best player. Dickie carried this band through some very lean years, not to mention, wrote all of their best tunes. Too bad and ugly divorce was the culmination of some awesome music.
Derek is very good, but a little to "jazzy" for my taste. I think the Allmans were better with Dickey, and today I think Dickey Betts & Great Southern are sounding like the Allmans should sound. Not that the Allmans ain't good. It's just...there's something very important missing.
I would add to this comment that Johnny is a fine writer as well and has put out some wonderful solo albums--check him out on Amazon or the like. He lives in the Wilmington, Delaware, area and often appears there.
Johnny Neel sounds great on that piano- shame he wasn't on "1st Set".
