i know this is a total "duh" statement, but it's really true: you have to be smart to be a good comedian. you can be ignorant; i've heard of some really ignorant comedians who were still funny, but you can't be stupid.

i find the best comedians, like Craig and Chris Rock, are very intelligent, which adds "oomph" to their jokes.
