  • amazing quality,

both the tennis and the video

    Thank you

  • 02:53 one of the ugliest forehands i've seen roddick hit

  • Top players today are so bland. I miss this tennis.

  • This is some of the best volleying I've seen Andy do EVER!

  • Safin proving that you don't need to grunt to hit hard.

  • both of them are not only the former no.1 but also the best of their country with clean style of play

  • What a great guy Marat. He has always been so many people's idol.

  • Roddick needs to go to the net more.

  • that's strange. Safin never smashed a racquet O.o

  • safin has really weird footwork

  • 8:57 translation??

  • great match.. but we all know who won this tournament lol

  • I think if Safin won the 4th set tiebreak it would have been an epic 5th set

  • roddick would need luck to win a match. Safins backhands were epic

  • lol when safins on, see how much roddick gets fucked over on those rallies. just crumbles like a sand castle :D

  • safin must of played like an idiot to lose to someone of roddick's level

  • Roddick really should serve and volley more. He's real good at it. As it is he tends to have bad approach shots from the baseline.

  • This match pretty much summarizes Marat Safin's career. Great start, then fade, great middle portion of the match, argue with the umpire, losing focus, then slightly regaining it and finally losing his cool and the match. If Safin had half as much focus as say Nadal, he would still be playing and being a factor week in and week out.

  • @davd1986 yeah but really unlucky in that 3rd set. stupid net cord by duck threw the big guy off.

  • @BrotherTree1 That net cord was simply heartbreaking. Even though Marat was a shadow of his former self and played pretty poorly in this match, he still could have won it and had the flow of the match at several points throughout.

  • @davd1986 I don't think so, you need to be at least a little mobile, post 2005 Marat was far from agile enough.

  • @MaratSafinVideos I know man, I know! I am just saying that even with being clearly slowed down by the knee injury, he still was competing at a fairly high level, a lot of his losses the last 2-3 seasons of his career were due to just a bit of a dip in concentration. I know I've mentioned this before, but 2009 alone was full of tight 3 set matches that should have gone his way, but didn't. I know movement is huge. He said he was also mentally tired from coming back from injuries every year.

  • 8:58 safin yelling makes me crack up haha

  • 2:34 oh yes.

  • Are there stats on Roddick's volleys in this match..? I see him hitting them in the highlights, but anyone know how many did he miss compared to how many volleys he made?

  • If Nalbandian had a 140mph serve he would be a GOAT contender already....

If Safin had determination and no brain cramps then he would win more slams.......

We could go on and on but 'what if's' and 'buts' are pointless.

  • @Anaconda43VR agreed! im tired of seeing that crap haha but there is one what if i agree with......what if federer wasnt around....how many slams do you tink roddick would have won?

  • @Anaconda43VR Safin was actually getting it together mentally and consistently 2004/2005, then he had a knee injury/surgery and he never fully recovered from it. He said it wasn't until mid 2008 that he stopped feeling pain. Now, I realize injuries are part of sports, and some are more fortunate than others in not having to deal with too many injuries, but Safin, like Haas, Nalbandian, Kuerten, Krajicek, Phillipoussis, Rios, Ancic, have had injuries/illness every season it seems.

  • @Anaconda43VR Safin was training hard after coming back from a wrist injury which sidelined for the vast majority of the 2003 season. Ljubicic said Safin was training like crazy in the fall/winter of 2003 in Monte Carlo and it paid off, he made the finals of the 2004 AO while being ranked 90th and beating Agassi, Roddick, among others. He carried that over to 2005 when he beat Federer in the semis and Hewitt in the finals, but a month or so later, got the knee injury.

  • The training of an athlete for longevity is strength and endurance. Fed has so much natural talent, if he trained more for strength he could play pro tennis until he is 40. With muscle mass comes power, as an athlete ages reaction time slows, muscle mass must make up for the loss in reaction time. Take any athlete at high levels of competition in their mid 30s, they have to strength train intensely or loose their edge.

  • If Fed put on serious leg muscle his overall power game would improve through the roof. Serving in the 140's would give him such an advantage with that and his giant kick he would hit way more service winners.

  • for tennis if you put on to much muscle mass, it will limit and slow your movement, especially on the upper body, for tennis you need flexibility, endurance, agility, speed and lot´s of muscle resistance/tone, not muscle mass..federer has plenty of leg muscle, take a better look at him, when he´s playing. he´s one of the fittest player´s on tour.

  • I think his game is built on footwork right now... which would require quickness and being able to speed up over and over for a certain amount of time. Hmm, I'm sure there's an optimal muscle mass, where your quickness and explosiveness aren't lessened by the increased weight due to muscle mass... Someone run it through some calculations and calculate that optimization problem!

  • None on your list can serve at 140 to 150 MPH consistently. Roddick could play NCAA Div 1 football, the rest on your list really need to do some gym time on the squat rack and then they to could serve really big. They have girl legs, this is why they lack the power to rev the ball like Roddick. Power is not everything in tennis but who doesn't like to see a 155 MPH serve?

  • Whaaat? There have been a hell of a lot of players who have more power than Roddick.

Federer, being one of them. Safin. Agassi. Sampras. Moya. And even newer guys like Del Potro, Djokovic and Cilic.

    Dunno what you're talking about.

  • Roddick 04 was a beast.

  • @Anaconda43VR Roddick 2010 is gonna be bigger, wait and see

  • If Fed had a powerful all-round game, he would be unstoppable...Or maybe even earn 16 grand slam titles, something crazy like that.

  • Already done that mate, he is unstoppable!

  • @picksboy dont know much about tennis do you? what lame thing to say. If he had this if he had that. He doesn't need Roddick's power to be unstoppable.

  • I miss the Roddick who played at 7:28

  • now all roddick needs is safins backhand. if he had that..maybe he wouldnt have been beaten 4-6 0-6 2-6 by federer in the semis.

  • 2 best looking guys on tour

  • I miss Safin already.

  • safin shirt is hideous

  • Roddick played well at the net.

  • It was HD for a while. But youtube have to make the quality lower for people with shit computers (and graphics card)

  • nice highlights but its not HD though

  • thats why roddick won

  • @utkarsh12

    So not true.

  • stupid fumbfuck this isnt hd

  • Watch my video responses to see the real Marat. The man before the injury and the guy that could move. Marat coming back from injury throughout 2003 ranked 86th and beating world number 1 Andy Roddick.

  • safin still played a really good match, roddick was just a little better than safin on this day.

  • For Safin's capabilities at this time, he played okay, but compared to his 2000-2005 form = Very poor, he could barely move around the court, turning like a bus.

  • agreed

  • Safin was on fire in that second set! Shades of the Fed Roddick match in the semis that year, roddick coming to the net, safin passing him at will+brutal backhands from Safin (as usual).

  • can someone tell me roughly when Safin turned crap?

  • when ur even half as gud as safin plz tell me

  • After the knee injury in 2005, he's been pretty awful since. He was so bad in this match.

  • Roddick looks almost "deft" at volleys in this match......maybe Big Mac was givin him some net advice at this time.....ha ha

  • and yes, i do realize that JC was coaching Roddick @ the time......i'm jus saying..some of Roddick's volleys are very McEnroe-esque to me, in this match :)

  • well its a miracle safin didnt smash his racket...lol..but dats night both of them was playing at their best and that a dream match i've been dreaming about and when i watch that match that night...live!! i was happy cause finally the dream comes true...xD

  • prettty decent volleys from roddick in this one. he still (2009) chops down on volleys way too much though and puts too much slice on it.

  • crankthat612: its been 2 months and I never posted it...however, nothing happened...and also, there are several words I don't quite understand: "dnt, ur, cuz, 2mara, b, uv, sratd, nw, stp, snd. wll, n).....care to explain why it did not work, and the meaning of all this words?

  • Actually, the first time I've ever seen andy hitting good and effective volleys. Normally he runs in and gets screwed. Good job andy.

  • my 2 favourite players - at his point i feel that rod was the second best in the world - b4 he lost to fed though

  • safin is slower since his old days and i suspect he gave roddick too much time for his returns. He has the better groundstokes ability, he should of rushed him more. I know that is easier said than done.

  • wow...one of the few matches where roddick's volleys are actually effective hahaha

  • don't mess with andy

  • wow, great volleys

  • this is the best ive seen roddick volley, that and the time he beat robredo on clay

  • i wish safin won that match :(

  • jeez safin should have won this

  • both are amzaing

  • that's not HD!

  • yea...its not HD

  • Safin looks a bit like David Beckham :P

  • great volley from roddick

  • amazing quality...!

  • the pass by safin at 2:25 is amazing

  • roddick voleys worked out perfect in this match!

  • Roddick played well at the net.

  • @quest8899

Too bad he doesn't serve and volley more often, he has the best serve in the world atm.

  • roddick should get some backhand lessons from safin

  • ahahahahh!!!

that's a good sugestion for roddick, to improve that backhand xD

  • too late for that now!!

its already 2008 and he couldnt improve it that much since then!!!!!!!!!

  • @intruZo1991 funny thing is that his backhand is probably better than all of ours combined...assuming we all play tennis here

  • One thing I never understood about the AO is why they don't show the scores from the previous sets, just how many sets each player has won.

  • yes, they show only the scores from the previous sets..I don't know why they do this!

Maybe because is more easy for the TV spectators shows only the scores from the previous sets, without the games...is more simple!

  • why sometimes they play to three?? I thought if you when 2 sets you win the match?

  • no, when you win 3 sets you win the match, on grand slam tournaments

  • And Davis Cup and the end of years masters (final only)

  • it seems as though some masters series finals during the season are also best of 5

  • no, all masters and 2 sets now I think, Olympic final is best of 5 too

  • up until 2006 the masters series final´s were best of 5 sets, from 07 onwards they changed the final to regular 3 sets, probably to prevent the players from physical burn out, so they can play the slams feeling less tired ,so it seems..

  • lol...I miss those 5 setters...It really showed you which players were fit and the ones just passing by.

  • federer and nadal played some great ones, on clay..

  • Shame I think the masters series finals have lost a certain aura now they're best of three. We had some unbelievable matches.

  • i suppose they changed it, so the player´s don´t get physically to tired, especially before the grandslam event´s..

  • @dmb224140 wow, r u newb bro?

  • i was looking for this match on youtube,it dissapeared, know it´s on again, thanks for puting it on, this is some of the best tennis i have seen andy play..

  • thank god for posting this!!! you're a savior!!!

  • thanks :D
