This match pretty much summarizes Marat Safin's career. Great start, then fade, great middle portion of the match, argue with the umpire, losing focus, then slightly regaining it and finally losing his cool and the match. If Safin had half as much focus as say Nadal, he would still be playing and being a factor week in and week out.
@BrotherTree1 That net cord was simply heartbreaking. Even though Marat was a shadow of his former self and played pretty poorly in this match, he still could have won it and had the flow of the match at several points throughout.
@MaratSafinVideos I know man, I know! I am just saying that even with being clearly slowed down by the knee injury, he still was competing at a fairly high level, a lot of his losses the last 2-3 seasons of his career were due to just a bit of a dip in concentration. I know I've mentioned this before, but 2009 alone was full of tight 3 set matches that should have gone his way, but didn't. I know movement is huge. He said he was also mentally tired from coming back from injuries every year.
Are there stats on Roddick's volleys in this match..? I see him hitting them in the highlights, but anyone know how many did he miss compared to how many volleys he made?
@Anaconda43VR agreed! im tired of seeing that crap haha but there is one what if i agree with......what if federer wasnt around....how many slams do you tink roddick would have won?
@Anaconda43VR Safin was actually getting it together mentally and consistently 2004/2005, then he had a knee injury/surgery and he never fully recovered from it. He said it wasn't until mid 2008 that he stopped feeling pain. Now, I realize injuries are part of sports, and some are more fortunate than others in not having to deal with too many injuries, but Safin, like Haas, Nalbandian, Kuerten, Krajicek, Phillipoussis, Rios, Ancic, have had injuries/illness every season it seems.
@Anaconda43VR Safin was training hard after coming back from a wrist injury which sidelined for the vast majority of the 2003 season. Ljubicic said Safin was training like crazy in the fall/winter of 2003 in Monte Carlo and it paid off, he made the finals of the 2004 AO while being ranked 90th and beating Agassi, Roddick, among others. He carried that over to 2005 when he beat Federer in the semis and Hewitt in the finals, but a month or so later, got the knee injury.
The training of an athlete for longevity is strength and endurance. Fed has so much natural talent, if he trained more for strength he could play pro tennis until he is 40. With muscle mass comes power, as an athlete ages reaction time slows, muscle mass must make up for the loss in reaction time. Take any athlete at high levels of competition in their mid 30s, they have to strength train intensely or loose their edge.
If Fed put on serious leg muscle his overall power game would improve through the roof. Serving in the 140's would give him such an advantage with that and his giant kick he would hit way more service winners.
for tennis if you put on to much muscle mass, it will limit and slow your movement, especially on the upper body, for tennis you need flexibility, endurance, agility, speed and lot´s of muscle resistance/tone, not muscle mass..federer has plenty of leg muscle, take a better look at him, when he´s playing. he´s one of the fittest player´s on tour.
I think his game is built on footwork right now... which would require quickness and being able to speed up over and over for a certain amount of time. Hmm, I'm sure there's an optimal muscle mass, where your quickness and explosiveness aren't lessened by the increased weight due to muscle mass... Someone run it through some calculations and calculate that optimization problem!
None on your list can serve at 140 to 150 MPH consistently. Roddick could play NCAA Div 1 football, the rest on your list really need to do some gym time on the squat rack and then they to could serve really big. They have girl legs, this is why they lack the power to rev the ball like Roddick. Power is not everything in tennis but who doesn't like to see a 155 MPH serve?
@picksboy dont know much about tennis do you? what lame thing to say. If he had this if he had that. He doesn't need Roddick's power to be unstoppable.
Watch my video responses to see the real Marat. The man before the injury and the guy that could move. Marat coming back from injury throughout 2003 ranked 86th and beating world number 1 Andy Roddick.
For Safin's capabilities at this time, he played okay, but compared to his 2000-2005 form = Very poor, he could barely move around the court, turning like a bus.
Safin was on fire in that second set! Shades of the Fed Roddick match in the semis that year, roddick coming to the net, safin passing him at will+brutal backhands from Safin (as usual).
and yes, i do realize that JC was coaching Roddick @ the time......i'm jus saying..some of Roddick's volleys are very McEnroe-esque to me, in this match :)
well its a miracle safin didnt smash his racket...lol..but dats night both of them was playing at their best and that a dream match i've been dreaming about and when i watch that match that night...live!! i was happy cause finally the dream comes true...xD

Roddick really should serve and volley more. He's real good at it. As it is he tends to have bad approach shots from the baseline.

If Nalbandian had a 140mph serve he would be a GOAT contender already....
If Safin had determination and no brain cramps then he would win more slams.......
We could go on and on but 'what if's' and 'buts' are pointless.

One thing I never understood about the AO is why they don't show the scores from the previous sets, just how many sets each player has won.

yes, they show only the scores from the previous sets..I don't know why they do this!
Maybe because is more easy for the TV spectators shows only the scores from the previous sets, without the games...is more simple!
