Im studying arch and in foundations it is all about design so i would like to thank u for this video really inspired me and helped me alot thanks again.
design is intrinsic to the next step. resources and availability are no longer constraints. to take culture and society to the next step demands design, whether simply evolutionary or innovative design is the marriage of resources to the human factor. to charles ames' point, good design it is to solve a problem elegantly, simply and economically. something that many lose track of when resources are no longer a constraint. among the best messages we can communicate.
I'm somewhat bothered by TED fans who trash this video. These internet culture junkies seem to have no idea who the Eames were and cannot appreciate anything that can't be completely encapsulated in a 15 minute presentation. Every time somebody says this is a poor TED presentation it is clear that they don't understand that Charles and Ray Eames are more important than TED talks. Maybe you people should try reading a book.
I must admit that I don't know much about Charles and Ray Earnes at all. In fact before I wtached this presentation I had never heard of them. But the presenter didn't do a very good job explaining who they were or what they did that was significant. That's why people say that it was a poor presentation. TED talks aren't intended for an audience that already has knowledge of the presentation subject. It's an oportunity to introduce something new.
Design is also a matter of communicating to offer a solution to a design problem. Poor communication can also be seen as poor design. This is the difference between design and fine art.
This made me feel like I came in halfway through the presentation, over and over again. Chairs, Clowns, Khrushchev, Chimerica, Clay and Ceramics, Citizen Kane, Culinary Class, and what was it about?
None of you did do anything as important for design history as the Eames. If you were kind of professional you'd be able to understand and enjoy this presentation, which I have to admit to be chaotic in a very nice way.
this tedtalk sucked. even if it was a bit of a eulogy. no disrespect. but it was boring sentimentality about back in the day when you could be mildly creative and make a name for yourself.
Good message, mediocre presentation. It's a shame because design shows some of the most brilliant aspects of humans, but the emphasis he puts on it gets blurred with the lack of presentational skills.
People hes correlating design of a product, with the design of the universe. It all begins with the perceptions of how things work, as an idea, into the drafting of new ideas. But it ultimately starts with the fundemental. And to remeber it all starts with the fundementals. And no matter what you think of other people or countries its all made of the same design.
How you perceive any situation is what you are going to get out of it.
From 11:45 to 12:45 explains what the talk is about.
That's all fine and dandy, but maybe you should take a step back and think about why you need to explain this to us. This is a result of a lousy presentation. He probably is trying to reiterate some profound philosophical adventures his relatives had, but he neglected to incorporate the fundamentals of communicating a point, namely capturing/interesting the audience. Like if Roger Ebert latest review just told us what camera lens the director chose without telling us if the movie was any good.
There's a fake Eames lounge chair that's been in the window of the furniture shop just round the corner from me, which is temptingly affordable. Been mulling over buying it for about the last 18 months. Should I, shouldn't I?
that banana leaf quote---pretentious as fuck. he doesn't know SHIT about why people eat with banana leaf, and furthermore, there is a fucking "change in man" that causes the "banana leaf parable." you can't make assumptions when you dont know the real reason. :|
not sure why that pissed me off as much as it did!
don't you guys think you are taking this a bit seriously?
I made a comment about how this video didn't meet my expectations. So what? It was shit compared to other TED talks, even though I loved the designs and the chairs.
Eames Demetrios articulates vital principles of design here. Such ideas cannot be fully explained in such a limited time frame, but he gives a good general sense of their importance.
His personal experiences show some ways that the work of design and art can be integrated into a vibrant family and community life, rather than being the lonely pursuits of solitary misfits.
Like many TED talks, this presentation works best as an inspiration to further learning, not the final word on its subject.
I can tell he's happy to show his home movies and that these guys meant the world to him, but I'm pretty sure I could give a rat's ass. It came of as really self absorbed and pretentious. Wasn't my cup of TED tea, maybe because I'm not really interested in design.
I gave you a thumbs up as I agree as far as this video BUT being familiar with the Eame's before this, I genuinely hope that some how, some way it gets at least one person to delve into what Ray and Charles where all about as they REALLY lived. REALLY cared, created and gave in such a unique and sincere way.
Look, I don't claim myslef as very good artist, but I know art. This was mediocre. And yes, my art is below his, but this guy was obsessed with his life.... kinda freaky.

some of you are missing the point. the presentation is chaotic by design.
it illustrates the fact that not all solutions are obvious, not everything can be solved with the first idea that comes to mind.
chaos is the essence of the design process. think outside the box!
