My number one song of all time !!! I feel like he is singing right to me, he is like a life line to me. Put your head on my shoulder, who ever sang it this way before. I just love Gene and his music, what a priceless gift !!!
I agree. I have followed Gene's music since 1965 when I bought the first Byrd's LP as a GI. Listen to Freedom Walk, my brothers. The man was prophetic as well as deep. His music gave so much.
I think it was Chris Hillman who said something like it was incredible the way Gene was able to write so many good songs. Songs of such depth and clarity with such poetic impact -even though he was not a seemingly well-educated person, he was just in touch with something truly universal and deep when he wrote a song.
What a talent! Without Gene, as we all came to find out, the Byrds were just another band from the 60's. But that First Byrds album still ranks in my top 5 of all time.........
With apologies to Gram Parons fans - he was never anything more than a pretty face in a loud shirt imitating THIS guy.Gene Clark was the real deal.It is an absurdity that Parsons is more well known than Clark. But that won't last forever.Clark's body of work will not be denied by music history. When the pictures fade and smart folks go looking for the great MUSIC they'll find Clark. The future will be very good to Gene Clark.
This was one of Gene's all time BEST! The pedal steel really makes this song soar! Plus the lyrics are incredible! I saw Gene sing this live in Denver just months before he passed! He is missed!
The internet has given us a window to so many great writers/preformers unlike any time before...I wish some of todays musicians would hear this wind and try to find in their heart a talent like Gene,, I''m still tilting the glass HS for you.
"Two sides to Every Story" is a great record. I remember a David Crosby interview and he is responding to the Byrds being billed as 'Americas answer to the Beatles' and he says: "The Byrds were never in the Beatles league, ever". I think Gene Clark was.
@seanreillyireland yeah I know....but they all were not just crosby. crosby, was just the most obvious about it. all of them resented the money he was making from publishing rights. well you know they all starved together before hitting the big time, and then you see one member making tons of money more then you, and you all work just as hard and each brings an importent element to the groups success ...it can be tuff. I try not to be too lay to much blame on crosby...he just dosen't have tact.
gene clark was a genius and all of his albums are superb...but white light and no other are both truly amazing....one of the greatest singers and songwriters by a mile.......
Somebody gave me his copy of White Light in 1975 because I was into the Byrds... best present I ever had. Then No Other came out a couple of months later. What an amazing time! Gene gave people exactly what they needed, too.
Mojo magazine, in 1995, had an article titled "Giants of American Music" which featured Mt Rushmore with Gene and four others on it (Dr John was one other)
Gene Clark was a great poet. All of his song are musically and lyrically beautiful. I don't know if "redemptiveness" is a real word, but when Gene sings it, it doesn't matter.
gene, i live for your song only.

Why is "Two Sides..." unavailable? It is the big hole in my Gene Clark collection. Someone in the record company should get their finger out!

The cold blue hunger of the soul. Gene sure had a way with a lyric.

If there was a Mt. Rushmore of American Pop and only room for a very few select faces Gene Clark would be just about my very top vote.
