To be fair I totally agree with your advice and the thing about effects and Tremelo picking videos on the Internet however Malmsteen and Tiago go at amazing speeds perfectly accurately (and others). With Tiago it's actually his accuracy that makes my jaw drop. He's a machine!! Dragonforce are an example of using effects which mask mistakes. Many 'fast' guitarists cheat but there are many amazing and honest players too.

Good point, Robot. I can play as fast as anyone I've ever heard. I've been able to do this for over 20 years... Just me and about 1,000,000 other guys.

The fact about guitar (or music in general) is that nobody cares who beats off the fastest - they want to know who is banging the supermodel. Motor skills are only important to the person performing them and it is the equivalent of penis envy... up and coming guitar players will be much more productive when the novelty of speed wears off.

Scientifically.. the speed at which you can repeat perfectly a set of notes in the proper way with the proper inflection and feel is a way of judging yourself on the part... This is why we practice with a metronome and speed it up to advance our playing. That is how speed is an indicator of skill. It is how we measure ourselves as practicing musicians.

I love this. When I was first starting to play guitar, I was all about Yngwie, MAB, and a lot of the neo-classical players, and it was always, "Whos the fastest?". I still play fast, at least in the 20nps range, but thats not what im all about now.
