The Prelude flew through the 700-foot slalom at 65.5 mph--faster than any other production car available. Even today, that time is still very respectable, faster than the Mazda RX8, the Acura NSX, the Lotus Esprit, the C5 Corvette, and even the Dodge Viper GTS. The scariest thing is this was all achieved on the stock 195/60/R14 Michelins.
@lastresort90 No never that care is really rare and probably has the best 4ws system ever built i'm going to rebuild it just a couple of hundred away from my goal probably have it running by next year but at a new level probably h22a if not rebuild the b20a its the jdm one :)
this 4ws system is the best and in fact.....In 1987, Road & Track published a test summary that shows the 1988 Honda Prelude 2.0Si 4WS outperforming every car of that year on the Slalom, including all Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Porsches. It went through the slalom at 65.5 mph (105.4 km/h), an amazing result for the time. For reference, the 1988 Corvette took the same course at 64.9 mph (104.4 km/h).
The Prelude was Wheels magazine's Car of the Year for 1987.
Why is this not on small city cars? Just make the rear steering turn more so the car can turn in a space of 3 or 4 meters. It would be much better in a city.
n my opinion Honda has done much better with its ATVs, motorcycles, and Dirtbikes. They make a good car, yeah, but they utterly dominate in their other fields.
I drove one once and I noticed they turn really fast! It takes some getting used to! But I noticed the rear steering is a hydraulic setup that I heard always seem to leak! Maybe that's the reason why they canceled this design only after a few short years.
It had to be hydrolic though. Because at higher speeds you don't want (or need) that much steering response. To do otherwise is dangerous as the car would be VERY unstable.
@noahsense Really? Was it an early model? Because i've done allot of work to these (i'm an auto tech), as well as several friends who've had them, and every single one of them i've ever seen has been hydraulic. They had a valve on the steering column which controlled fluid flow (power steering fluid) through the lines, to a steering rack in the back. How did they vary the steering rate (read my previous comment)?
I just like the look, never got around to buying 1 though. Generation 2 Prelude and Legend still looks better than most designs today. But pricewise Japan has got serious competition from Tata Nano. More than 10 times less, which shows that Honda has been profiteering off it's supporters tremendously. The producer most considerate on the pricing will dominate the market. Now if only Tata could make a sleeker looking design . . .
The 91 Prelude was supposed to first car ever with 4 wheel steer (correct me if I'm wrong) But I have an 89 model Accord which has 4 wheel steer, so that 89 Accord must have built after 1991 etc.
the third generation prelude was sold between 88-91, I want to think the 88 model got 4WS but I'm not 100% on it. My first car was a 89 Prelude with 4WS so I can definitely say Honda added it by 89 and not 91
@EmphaticItalic my '88 Nissan Skyline R31 had active rear steer. And it was available from the 87 model, so I'm guessing Nissan was the first to implement this at least in the Japanese market
Also Which? magazine who do the largest independent survey on cars in Europe have shown that Honda have been the most reliable cars for the past 4 - 5 years. With the S2000 at the very top.
Hey nissanskyline16, You got a good point, but I want to add some thing. Who cares if Lube has 4WS!!, it's a freaking FWD car, how well can its handling be when compare to Skyline?? 4WS on a FWD chassis??? What a fucking joke!!! Why Honda stop Prelude production when it's a "Such a good car"??? Give me five, Nissanskyline16!!
"I hate Honda because Honda drivers are punks and Honda is easy to break in and steal"
You sir are a prat. Honda make the best mass product petrol engines in the world, not one vtec has gone wrong. Nissan make pretty wank engines. The 240 turbo was seriously underpowered, the pulsar has too much power for its crap gear box and the skylines have major electrical problems. Cost my mate thousands when his computer went in his.
A timing belt breaking is not a reliability issue - it comes form poor servicing and will break on all cars with timing belts if not replaced.
"How many Vtec engine have you seen in your fucking life??"
When i was at uni studying engineering i saw loads. If you have actually ever taken one apart and observed the quality of machining you would realise that the built quality is unrivaled in the mass market.
@Ariannyishot No they're not. Toyota are very good, but across the board they aren't as reliable as honda. The Hilux is brilliant, but then you have the old 6 cyclinder supras which used to go through head gaskets and piston rings, the prius which has electrical problems, the 2.4 surf which is another head gasket eater, celcia gt4 which is seriously underpowered. I've had a surf 3l and it was awesome.
@BeforeTheNoose get rid of the headgasket problems and u got yourself a reliable ass car i still my 85 supra everyday changed the headgasket the car still has alot of balls
I highly agree- I was once a Toyota nut, raced and worked on MR2's and yes, no doubt Toyota makes a damn good solid engine.
but now that I drive a Prelude, I realize 'genius' is not a word that's attributed to something merely solid. For something that's cheaper, the balance of output and reliability in a Honda engine is impressive.
to phguy76: speaking of Honda and motorcycles, Honda did way more than "dominate" the motorcycle industry ;)
wow 200.000 miles.. my friend owns a 97' prelude.. it got to be around 100.000 miles something not sure.. even tough it still has a nice sound and the engine is still shape.. 0-100 takes 14 seconds with 3 people inside :D well i've seen worse ones..

Correct (at least in America) 1988-1991 (and some early 1992) were an all mechanical system. After that they did change over.

"Honda were still producing motor cycles when Toyota and Nissan dominating the automotive industy."
Argumentum ad populum. That is a logical fallacy and does not support the claim that they are better built cars.
"What do you know about Toyota??"
Probably more than you. I also own a hilux and landcruiser.
"Toyota and Nissan are the first and second biggest motor coporation in Japan."
