I think it's a mistake that people always insist that fiddle tunes be played faster. Why? It's dance music, not an opportunity to show off. Probably comes from the American Idol misconception that more showboating equals better singing.
The Irish Washerwoman is a tune traditionally played like this, even the Dubliners do this, in actual fact, the Irish Washerwoman can be played a LOT faster, and usually is. It is not showing off, it is playing the piece traditionally, thats why it is so famous in Ireland, i know, i'm Irish, i play it on the accordion.
That's a VIOLIN!How do you think that's a viola? You play a viola with a bow on the floor as in classical music! He's playing the Violin (FIDDLE) and damn good at it !
Sorry if I embarassed you, but a Viola is played on the floor! You should know, you play one and I would love to hear it! Sincerly, Tony
you play viola with a bow on the floor? wut the hell does that mean, i know you play viola just like a violin except its in a different cleff, and its slightly larger.
You're thinking of a Cello, a Viola is played similar to a violin, it is very close to the same instrument just about 2 inches larger than a typical 4/4 violin.
Great job. Have you heard Andre Rieu play the Irish Washer Woman on Youtube? Type him in and hear him play it with the Fiddle player from the band the Dubliners it's so fast.
I took a look at that clip as you suggested. It's interesting to compare the variety of styles and performers with all fiddle tunes, or with all music for that matter.
I have also heard a version of "Irish Washerwoman" played in 4/4 waltz time rather than the traditional 6/8 jig.
oops....I probablly should be more careful what I write as I don't read music, and even have to struggle with describing timing. Waltz-timing for me is rather an instinctive thing, but ok I'll try to remember it's 3/4. I was happy too the video turned out the way it did. Just took a chance with the "hello there" intro hoping it would turn out on camera. Serendipity that it framed nicely.
Odd way of holding the bow, if I'm seeing it right.
I'm just starting, and have a hard time not curving my thumb the wrong direction because I tend to grip the bow too tightly when I concentrate too hard (usually when trying to read the music & get gingers in right place & bow the right area of strings & time fingering chngs with bow strokes & ...
Good Job Hillar. I can play that tune also but you play it better than I. I have always had trouble on the second part that does that little role down. Great Job!

Look up the lyrics, trying to sing along at this pace would be so insanely diffucult.

You're thinking of a cello, a viola is played upright like a violin. They're very close to the same instrument.

I love the into (putting wood on the fire).
Very nicely done video. Makes me wish I still lived in Alabama.
