  • Go man go thats straight kill the club hot

  • 6 peoples are jalous...

  • Does anybody know what size speakers Janek is using here? I.e. two 2x 10s, two 2x 12s or one of each? Thanks in advance.

  • @JimJammBassMan The top cabinet is a 2x10. I can't really see the bottom one, but would make an educated guess at it being another 2x10.

  • @KillerFridge Thank you, squire. I had assumed it was a 2x10 on top, but I wasn't sure about the bottom. Much appreciated.

  • definitely one of the most coolest white bassist

  • They should get him and victor wooten to do a concert together. Then my life would be complete

  • beast

  • Nice

  • it's from his very own Song "Four Brothers" with Mike Stern. It's on Janeks album "The Space In Between"

  • Does anybody know from which song this riff is from?

  • It is SO FUCKIN GREAT!

  • 0:39 is my fav part sick riff man!

  • are any of us qualified to state what it was or wasn't invented for. Perhaps considering simply music played on any instrument and the exploration and invention required to perform such an outstanding sound as Janek produces would be a far healthier approach than being negative because it is out with the remit of what someone told is right /wrong. Imagine you had never seen a bass or heard music before and found one, with no preconceptions of it's role or purpose would opinion still be the same

  • It's funny many of the remarks made here about what a bass is and isn't. Especially the concept of stating what the bass guitar was intended for. By coincidence the laser is roughly the same age as the bass guitar. When it was invented it was described as a solution looking for a problem. Nowadays we are never more than 8 feet from a laser. Indeed this text you are reading has travelled by laser to get to you. This may seem rather tenuous, however as none of us actually invented the bass guitar

  • SWAG!

  • What peda u use for looping?

  • I don't get people who say that six string bassists are guitarists. The musical feel is totally different, not to mention a slightly different tuning. It doesn't matter if you've played bass for 20 years. How many years you play is irrelevant. If you've been playing for 20 years, you should be more open minded to music. Any instrument is anything you want it to be. A bass is used for locking down rhythms, but if you feel that it can do more than just that, by all means.

  • this is incredible; the groove is tight, the timing and the phrasing are perfect, it's expressive and above all something you want to listen to. A huge inspiration on every level =)

  • Any musician can learn something from this, his phrasing is PERFECT!

I have been truly inspired :)

  • nice bass playing, but the sound is nothing special

  • @Jodokusable agreed...looks like it's a direct signal. It's a shame they aren't micing the amp

  • daaaaa!

  • @taufoofar Really?

  • I love Janeks sound. The bass tone pallettes on his "mystery to me" CD release is close to perfection. Such a pity that the gear he uses is so damn expensive.

  • Man, the groove in this could make a black man cry with tears of envy : )

Anyone knows if it's a song, or just pure improv?

    cheers

  • @bujakah876 It's a tune of his called Four Brothers, he plays the melody and then improvises.

  • @bujakah876 its called Four Brothers.

  • His movement reminds a bit of Jacko

  • he really looks like matt dillon

  • The lick from 0:41 to 0:45 resume the whole thing, the guy is great!!!

  • wow, groovy as hell

  • This feeling is extraordinary, better then whatever drug there is.

    Don't do drugs m'kay?

  • he kinda reminds me of hiromi uehara's bass player

  • @mikologs I was wondering if I was the only one that thought that! They look similar (at least stylistically speaking) and play similarly. Of course, Tony and Janek are two different animals on the bass but there is some crossover there.

  • lol the recording is only as good as the mic on the video not the amp the amp is sick not my fav but sick i love the old ampeg tube amps

  • Good player, but the sound... I just can't understand why people seem so amazed by these TC amps ???

  • @lessingesnus the recording is the mics fault not the amp. the amps sound great not a fav but it's not an ampeg lol but up there

  • @wtbyguy83 Notice the lack of ambient noise? I'm pretty sure this is direct, no mic. This is just the sound he likes and sets it too. If it had a little more clarity I'd love it,

  • Nice Groove man !

  • Wow... I never knew that James Taylor could play bass, too!

  • yeahh

  • No matter how many times I watch this vid, I still love it. Cant wait until I get in a 5 string tenor.

  • 5 string tenor!! I thought I was the only who thought of it that way :p

  • What else would you call it? :P

  • is that a 26 fret?

  • @FresnoGuy101 Yes, his signature model.

  • Fodera matt garrison signature model...

  • Aye, tis.

  • Does anyone know the name of this song?

  • @carthagepropaganda Four Brothers.

  • Who by? or is it a standard that i am yet to discover?

  • Janek original.

  • i love how the evolution of the electric bass has come so far in only 60ish years. heh wonder wtf is next. if it can even progress even further.

  • I love the Melody.

  • Im sorry but everyone arguing on this thread just sounds so childish, especially RocktheStageNYC with his claims of playing in front of thousands of people like it really matters on YouTube it just sounds so pretentious and childish. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but Janek's a great player and his track record shows that with all of his gigs as a sideman and a leader. He's pretty much constantly working and you can't deny that.

  • Thats right Rickey I'm entitled to my opinion as you are entitled to yours.

The really childish people are the ones trying to convince me into liking this music. I don't like this kind of playing just as I don't like lima beans.

Its my personal taste. Move on and get over it.

You guys can't seem to fathom the simple concept that there will be people who don't like what you like. Now THAT is childish.

  • I don't have a problem with you having your own opinion, I have an issue with the way your going about expressing it and talking about it. Just immature.

  • and musical intent. So if you feel that you can express yourself as a musician and person by locking down tight low end rhythms and being completely supportive, then all the power to you. If you feel like your voice is the full range of such a wonderful contrapuntal instrument, then that is your calling, the world of bass needs both types of musician.

  • I can see both sides to the opinion. I'm a jazz / orchestral / electric / and upright bassist. There is truth to most bass players making their money in the lower third of the bass. But if you look at the history of the bass and it's bassists, there are those who use the full range of the bass, and those who are most comfortable in the low end. There is no right or wrong answer. Personally, on my own taste, I like to be able to use the full range of the instrument to express my emotional and

  • He's the Pat Metheny of bass :)

  • i luv loopers

  • If you close your eyes and listen, does it really matter what instrument the music is coming from? The bass was made for music, not the other way around.

  • He muted the crap out of that puppy.

  • "meant for"....interesting...

    I'd recheck your "established views".

  • I'm not buying into your musical dogma.

  • So don't. Its just my "opinion". Its my personal view on the role of the instrument. If you like this kind of self-indulgent noodling then that's great.

and its not dogma. Dogma is an established belief meant to be authoritative and not to be disputed. I'm quite content for other people to like this - its just not what I think I bass if meant for.

  • It's bass soloing....ass

  • The bass is whatever you want it to be

  • Ever used a snow shovel to bag leaves? Ever used a fork to cut your spaghetti? What an instrument is "meant" to do is hardly the point.

Also, your calling Janek Gwizdala a failed musician at any level gains you no credibility. I don't care what stages you've played, who you've toured with, the fact that you even hint that this man's choice of style is inferior to yours shows just how sorry you truly are, if indeed that is how you feel.

  • Man... you guys get VERY defensive don't you. Relax...its MY OPINION. OPINION....get it? NOT a statement of fact. This kind of bass playing does ZERO for me and I FEEL it wanders off the intent of the bass and what is what designed for. To me the bass is a rhythm instrument NOT a lead instrument. If you feel otherwise, thats fine.

Guys like this are great players for sure but to ME its not bass playing. Its low lead guitar. Thats my OPINION. Nothing more

  • I share your opinion to some point. 4 stringed P-bass is my ultimate choice and when it comes to playing, I'm in love with Jamerson, Bootsy etc. However, playing an istrument is about musicianship, not about being a bassman or a pianist.

I reckon there's nothing wrong in playing a low-sounding guitar (that is a 6str. bass) as long as it's pleasurable, groovy and about music, not showing off with techniques.

Janek has the feel. I enjoy it.

  • he writes all those melodies for "lead instruments as you call them. for this song he does play the rhythm that you hear in the intro. he was just there to display the tc amp and if he was to go up there and play only the rhythm no one would be entertained. he is a bass player but he also composes. look into stuff before you start judging. there is a video with this same song where he does just that rhythm and the lead part he wrote he handed off to the keyboard. but no keyboard here for lead

  • well regardless of what your opinion is, we want you to change it for your own sake, because if everyone had such close minded opinions, bass wouldn't be what it is today, what if jaco was as close minded as you?

  • so telling me to CHANGE my opinion to yours is NOT being close minded? Everyone has to think just like you?

to be truly open minded must accept that there are many different views of the same thing. You see this kind of playing as a never ending experimentation of individual style and expression - I see it as noodling.

I'm an old school Rocker where the bass is a foundation instrument, not a solo instrument. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

  • i would hate to experience how boring music must be for you

  • @RocktheStageNYC Cool, as a backup singer for who?

  • Its a five string ( cant you count ) also Richard Bona uses that kind of and his a LEGEND!!!

  • I know it a five string jackass - like I said I've been a bassist for 20 years - my point was this kind of playing is what the bass was designed for.

These type of guys are just finger playing guitar players. The bass is a rhythmic instrument, not a lead instrument. A bass should not have 6 or 7 strings, if it does you're getting away from the original intention of the instrument.

I guess I'm just a "purist" in that sense.

  • "I've been a bassplayer for 20 years, i know everything. My word is law, beware" - The worlds best human

  • "I've been a bassplayer for 20 years" - says I'm no newbie.

You looked at that way because of your inferiorities.

  • So you're saying that Anthony Jackson (inventor of the 6-string "contra bass *guitar*") is not in keeping with the original intent of the bass guitar?

Or will you say that Jaco's influence on the instrument in invalid and null because he stepped out of the traditional rhythmic role?

BTW - I've played bass for 22 years and I am not afraid to play a 6 or solo, but 80% of the time I play a Pbass and simply hold down the low end.

Are you a "bassist", or a *musician* that plays bass?

  • I fail to understand why so many people have a problem with someone who simply doesn't like this kind of bass playing. I'm not saying the guy sucks or his music sucks I think this is simply overplaying.

Are you all so insecure and close minded that no one can have an opposing POV?

  • I agree. Even if you're going to do a bass solo, you should stay in the 'bass' register and not stay in the 'all the way up to 28'th fret on the high C string' range, otherwise it's not bass playing and sounds unnatural. However, Janek is a master at sax phrasing, and if he did the above statement and stuck with standard bass tuning, he would be AMAZING.

  • i've seen his do this live and it is soooo amazing!!

    Best Bassist alive ever!

  • toda la onda tiene el tipo!!!

  • Sounding very cool. Janek has such good phrasing.

  • First comment:)

    It sounds awesome! GREAT
