They used them in the Pacific theater of the war because they needed

a vehicle to get over the coral reefs so the troops could get closer to

the beach.

@AUG351 Thanks for the info. I can't help but think that those craft could have landed the troops at Omaha closer to the seawall and cover instead of leaving them so exposed on that wide beach. I've been on Omaha Beach, It's quite a distance from where the water ends to the fortified bluffs.
