SolidWorks 2011 Book Beginning to Advanced SolidWorks 2011 Modeling, Drafting and Assemblies from Machined Parts to Bl objects has been written by engineers for engineers. There is an iPad app that lets you view solidworks models. Runs really fast and has measurements and solid cut planes. It's called iCAD Professional and it has a free demo version, iCAD Free.
Many years ago I did use 3d studio of autodesk, stll wonderful and easier. Solid work look's easy, but to many tricks. I spend 2 year with solid words, and still not happening. Is not easy.

Nice video for learning. But a trick I have learned over the years from using SolidWorks is totally avoid using threads, unless it absolutely requires it for a photo finish display or something. A patterened cut often suffices for rough display where high detail isn't critical. Reasoning is due to memory for constant calculations of threads. True, newer systems have a lot of memory to spare, but the bigger your project gets, it eventually all slowly adds up.
@plord28 Isn't there some way to asign some sort of thread stats value to a part that it could be recalled in a pinch with a preprogramed command from an embedded file should it be needed?
I've kindda been looking for a solution along those lines as well. But haven't really found anything. Having a configuration file is probably the closest solution. Have the part configured for both a supressed state and an unsupressed. Then in your assembly file have a multiple configuration option set as well. Keeping in mind that you have rebuild errors if everything isn't set just "perfectly". Most often caused by bad mating with the parts. A real bitch, but do'able.
I got a question: did you learn solidworks through practice in a class that involved it, just by spending time using it due to your own interest or did you take a specific course to learn it?
No, I learn SolidWorks moment where I work requires to use it. Where previously I could only draw using Mehanical Desktop. Little fellow taught by labor and the rest is self-taught
Do you have to enter the exact coordinates(x,y) to constrain the triangle to the helix curve? Isn't there a simple pierce constrain that you can apply?
yeah you don't need to do this except you want to. Solidworks 2009 premium has a tools box in the design library. You can find almost all kind of hardware like bolts, nuts, washers, screws, bearings, pins....
is there a way to animate it so that the nut screw onto the bolt? i am using solidworks 2010 and i can make the collapse animated but i cannot make it so the nut screws onto the bolt. right now it just slides on when i animate it.
@carlug03 I am wanting to know the same thing... I do not see how he got the 3 sided poly to the precise end of the helix, I am stuck at this part lol
You need an extruded cut at the top of the threads to simulate the threading tool leaving the surface. The way you've done it the thread comes to an abrupt end.
@ss770640 I know that by making this bolt using the techniques shown in this video I have used those skills to make other things, things not in the standard engineering library.
2. A simpler approach would be to create it with 1 revolve, 1 cut-extrude and cosmetic thread. Thread runout is obviously not a concern when the thread profile isn't even right!
@wdrpsp19 Hey, once I've finished, how can I save it such that I can use it in some other project? Instead of keeping on repeating this??? Plz tell me.
I personally don't like it when turned parts are made in this fashion rather than using a revolved sketch for the base material. It is more difficult to manage all the feature dimensions for use in a design table should you want to make various configurations of the same general geometry.
sorry, but this representation is not correct ...! It is not very crittical, but at the top side of the thread, just under the head of the bolt, the exit of the thread should be variable, you are not showing this; the thread hast to come out towards the surface of the shank of the bolt gradually ...!
At 2:57 you can see how the helix finishes bluntly !
Or you could go to mcmasterDOTcom and down load a solid works model of the bolt you need and save time and money. If they size isn't there modify the drawing
pls can you tell me how i know what values to set for the pitch and the x and y coordinates of the triangle because whenever i try to do something similar using a different cutting profile, the swept cut never works for me although i follow the exact same steps.
its preferable to make a relation of coincidence betwen the center of the triangle and the beginning of the elipse. rather than defining the center of the triangle.
Thank you very much, you are more helpful then the retarded "help" program. Shit, I'm so tiered, why can't things be more DIRECT? Sometimes I just want to come to the fucking conclusion, just tell me the way things are. But thanks buddy or lilly... very helpful indeed.

1. The sketches aren't fully defined!
2. A simpler approach would be to create it with 1 revolve, 1 cut-extrude and cosmetic thread. Thread runout is obviously not a concern when the thread profile isn't even right!
