Do you have any problems with the plaster bandages breaking or being fragile? How thick is it? Looks pretty thin at 8:08. Can you expect to make 10+ casts from a mother mold like this, or is it more temporary?
@inspire79 If made properly a bandage shell mothermold like theis can last for many castings and many years. I have a head mold that I still use that I made with Gel-10 and Plaster Bandages over 7 years ago. Keep in mind that these are not hobby grade plaster bandages but are the high strength ones we sell on our webstore. There is a huge strength difference between the two.
Two questions mate: First off, did you put Vaseline on the silicone before applying the plaster? And second, do you know of any way of further strengthening the plaster so that it lasts longer?
@out6of6my6mind No vaseline is needed to release the silicone. The only part that needs to be released is the exposed seam of plaster bandage material. A properly made plaster bandage shell will last many years if made right. If you want additional strength you can let the bandages dry for a few days and brush some EZ Flo 120 resin over them.
can gel-10,or any other types of silicone be mixed and poured straight reg. alginate cast-i used to cast a hand in an empty paper milk carton, filled w/ standard alginate, have the person remove their hand, and up-end to get rid of water, and pour in a poly urathane elastomer, and get a seamless hand-any advice?
@tuuexx If you are asking if you can pour polyurethane rubber into alginate the answer is no. Urethanes are VERY moisture sensitive so you would have major bubble issues unless you dried the inside of the mold.
@bradmacaboy Thickened (using tinthix) 7120 silicone is great for restoration projects. Cast them up in #1 pottery plaster or casting plaster. Stay away from the plaster at hardware stores it is LOW quality.
you can make masks out of a balloon tape and plaster bandages I made a klingon mask when I was in school so I wish I had money to do this stuff I could make a movie I always liked learning about special effects I use to wach movie magic and all
instead of using it for a silicone mask would this work if i was making a latex mask with a clay sculpt on the armature first? look at my video titled "Deformation sculpt" and you'll see what i mean
Try to find an artist store rather than going to Michael's, which is a craft store. Michael's doesn't have much at all, and when it does have what you are looking for, it is usually expensive. In Portland, Oregon, a great place is "Art Media". I only know Portland though...
You do a WONDERFUL JOB! Something I wouldn't mind doing... thinking about buying some of your products too! Thanks for these videos! I find it fascinating!!!
I made that mold almost a year ago and it is still in use with little wear on it. Another mold made the same way in 2003 is still in use and aside from resin spilled on the outside still looks and works great.
Help! I already did two one-piece silicone castings from lifesized chavant clay heads. When I place the finished mold in the support shells and start turning it around to slosh around the silicone for reproducing, the silicone mold is flapping around and falling down from the plaster wall. What did I do wrong? Sorry for the bad english.
Without seeing your mold, I would suspect that you didn't make the silicone mold thick enough. Another option would have been keying the silicone to the plaster mold. For an example of this, look at BITY's rotomolding video with the "Swamp Monster" head.
Thanks! The silicone mold is at about 5 mm thick. If I make it thicker maybe I won't be able to pull it off the clay head like a glove...? Yes my next attempt will be trying to key the silicone to the plaster.
In art class we put vasaline (however you spell it) around and all over our entire face. We would then start putting tiny pieces of plaster on our face until we covered our entire front face. It was quite fun.
Well, I am sufficiently damn impressed by this that the easy flow 120 rotational casting, BY HAND, that is to follow, is certain to be just as brilliant. ;-)

Are you asking about the heat from plaster bandages? If so, the heat or exotherm is minimal.
