I was a small boy on a trip with my father to tennesee when I first heard this song. When I hear this song I'm standing on the seat and so happy getting to spend time with a father I barely knew, just loved with all that I had.
When you let someone slide, you let them down, It's a joke on that, see, assholes don't think poor people appreciate charity, That's why they won't give a bum a dime, and won't vote democrat, and yet say, that they will give in the name of the Lord. Give to who? Tax deductible charity organizations ran by their friends. be cruel and be Kind!
Carlene was the one who said "I'm here to put the cunt back in country", dring a live show and unaware that June Carter and Johnny Cash were in the audience.....the rock press had a field day with it! Nice to see her in this vid; RIP Carlene.
I saw this video back in the early 80s and have loved this song ever since. Nick's had quite a consistent career and is it just me or does the place they are playing at look the exact same as where Elvis Costello and the Attractions filmed the Oliver's Army video? It would make sense because both were once signed to Stiff records.
Will never forget that Nick said...and I quote.." Carlene puts the cunt back in country " 1 of my favourite quotes ever. BTW gotta love Dave Edmunds.....
@peezed1 I thought that was actually Carlene's line...spoken right in front of her mom and "The Reverend" when she opened one of her shows. Either way it's a great line!
Ha ha sevoak! That has made my morning! Can't stop laughing when I wanted to say that I listened to this album over and over and over when it came out. Excellent album and of course this song, beautiful
@lifeinpictures Sadly, they're not. They divorced in 1990. If it's any help, from what I've read it was an amicable divorce and they remain on speaking terms although they've both since remarried.
Brings back some fond memories of listening to the BBC and US Armed Forces Radio while up in the Fulda Gap looking over the border at the Russian tanks in the distance. That song was an anthem of sorts and I will take that memory with me when i go......Doesn't sound like good times but they truly were.Mr Lowe's music made it all tolerable
I was madly in love with someone else who appears in the video -- feels like yesterday -- but thought then and always will that Nick is one of the finest musicians I ever heard (or met) and hot, hot, hot too. Kiddies... he was the sexiest thing on two legs (trust me). Prob'ly still is, dunno... and his music never feels old.
This same album included Nick's country rave-up "Without Love," which was eventually covered by Johnny Cash, who, of course, was Carlene Carter's dad (or step-dad, I can't remember)....who was Nick's wife. And the bride here.
I'm back in summer of '79 every time I hear this. I'm working again at the local bakery, cleaning baking pans, sweeping and mopping dough encrusted floors. My boss is yelling at us like slaves, "i want to be able to eat an egg off this floor." And I'm also joking around with a lgirl from school who works with me. Her name is Natalie and she keeps batting her eyes, shaking her 70's hair and flirting, but playing so hard to get. "Cruel to be kind," I guess that's what Nat was being with me.
This song reminds me of hurricane Frederick in September of '79. School had been canceled for the day and the power had gone out. I recall sitting in my room looking out the window at trees as they bent back and forth to the point that you expected them to snap. We had a battery operated radio on in the house in case of tornado warnings and such. This song was played several times throughout the day and evening.
The adorable Carlene Carter playing the role of Nick's wife (was this their actual wedding? It wouldn't be past Nick to do that). She is an excellent songwriter in her own right. They are divorced now. After some meaningful artistic and financial success, she went through a difficult time with drugs, but survived and last I heard, doing well.
@MarkSentMe If you watch the youtube video, Nick Lowe interview on David Letterman, Nick does in fact state this is video from his actual wedding. Very neat indeed!
I loved this song when it first came out in '79 (when I was 9yrs old) and all these years later, I love it just as much. I can never get tired of listening to it.
I'm a sperm cell in a 14-year-olds left testicle. I know I'll probably end up in a Kleenex and flushed down the toilet, but if I ever do get to an egg and make a person, I know we'll this like type of music better than whatever they are playing in 2028. Wonder how I'm using the internet? There's a Starbuck's down here with free WiFi. Yeah, those fuckers are everywhere!!!

@xTheBritishLadyCx so sick of these unoriginal comments. I'm only 12, I'm only 18...but I love this song. Nobody cares how old you are...it's just annoying.
@Catandthespoon - Who cares whether the comments are unoriginal or original? Some of us are just reflecting because the song evokes memories and we remember where we were or how old we were when we first heard it. If someone mentions their age, that's hardly something to get uptight about. Relax... :)

The intro to this song is one of purest musical statements I've heard in pop music. To start, the drums are not fancy, yet fully support the guitair phrasing perfectly and get us to the verse with excitement. Strumming guitairs in each channel establish the tempo securing and lay a melody base for Nick's pithy vocal. The bass dutifully mimes the guitars. And expertly, the production is Motownified with a simple tamborine in a reverb chamber on the 4th beat of every bar to keep things hopping!
wondering where the scenes were shot. the car and driver were oriented just like here in the Stattes. Great song. And terrific video. Thanks for posting.
The bride in the video is Carlene Carter, daughter of June Carter Cash & step daughter of Johnny Cash..Carlene is singer in her own right,~I Fell in Love~
Um, love the song...no question there...tho can anyone tell me what the firetruck he's playing??? What is that yellow instrument he is playing in the video? Bass? Guitar? Something else? Please, Help, it's driven me crazy since I first saw this vid on Mtv a couple billion years ago...Thanks in advance!
@ryanbmx5 - it's an 8-string...could be a bass...check out 0:27, good shot of the head but fuzzy on the logo...Hamer? Kramer? I know Kramer made 8-string basses, check out Cheap Trick live vids...Thanks for the reply!
@MayarO1313 Yes. it's a Hamer 8 string. Had the same one in black back in the day. Signal was split between an Ampeg SVT amp with folded horn and a Fender Twin Reverb amp that ever so slightly over driven.
@mrmichaelsd - Thank You So Very Much! I can say right now that Nick is one talented man, saw him playing a bass just by himself closing out a show (I think it was Entertainment Tonight?) playing "All Men Are Liars" and singing it, and busted tail trying to find it for years...when I found the studio version, it wasn't as good as his doing it solo...anyone remember which show, or happen to have the clip?
Samantha and I decided to meet at Napoleon Bonaparte's Pizza shop that September '79 evening.. Ordered a 4.99 Pepporoni and two drink special. She and I sat and shot the s**t for two hours. When we started eating Sam was just my next door buddy, but after "Cruel to be Kind," and a couple of ELO songs, I really started to dig Samantha as more than just a bud. After a trip to the Custard Stand we decided a trip out to the beach might be in order. Sand, surf, and sweet dreams.
A beautiful video. It is so much better than 99% of the over-produced crap that comes out of the music business. Then or now. I had no idea Dave Edmunds was in the band, or the video. Excellent. Stevie Nicks' videos would have been 1000% better had she had people like Nick or his producer to guide her. Real, authentic, funny stuff is what makes videos endearing. Thanks.

MayarO1313 6 months ago
@MayarO1313 It's definitely a bass. Looks like a 5 string. It looks a little confusing at first since he's playing with a pick.
ryanbmx5 6 months ago
@ryanbmx5 - it's an 8-string...could be a bass...check out 0:27, good shot of the head but fuzzy on the logo...Hamer? Kramer? I know Kramer made 8-string basses, check out Cheap Trick live vids...Thanks for the reply!
MayarO1313 5 months ago

What a fantastic song. Buddy Holly would be proud of what Lowe & Co accomplished, with this one.

Thanks.

Stiff label's slogan: "It it's not stiff, it isn't work a f***
LOL! Any label that can come up with that slogan has GOT to be cool. :-)

@chisoxfan708 Calling today's pop stars artists is a stretch, but your point is well taken.
