  • I was a small boy on a trip with my father to tennesee when I first heard this song. When I hear this song I'm standing on the seat and so happy getting to spend time with a father I barely knew, just loved with all that I had.

  • I just love this video hokey as it is. I love this period of Nick Lowe. This is a great song.

  • When you let someone slide, you let them down, It's a joke on that, see, assholes don't think poor people appreciate charity, That's why they won't give a bum a dime, and won't vote democrat, and yet say, that they will give in the name of the Lord. Give to who? Tax deductible charity organizations ran by their friends. be cruel and be Kind!

  • My mom was a HUGE fan of Nick Lowe back in the day... I guessed it sorta rubbed off on me.

  • I remember that! From 1979! God I'm getting old!!!!

  • @tuzotonic yeah. Also, a bunch of Elvis costello's and dave Edmunds' records were produced by Nick lowe.

  • Carlene was the one who said "I'm here to put the cunt back in country", dring a live show and unaware that June Carter and Johnny Cash were in the audience.....the rock press had a field day with it! Nice to see her in this vid; RIP Carlene.

    n

  • One of my all-time favourite tracks.

  • Loving this song my whole life! I just posted a video of me covering it on acoustic guitar on my youtube channel. (2 versions)

  • We love Nick Lowe!!! Please check out our tribute- we covered "Cruel to Be Kind" because it's a great song :)

  • I'm 51 and I approve this video...

  • @psychlyst I'm 15 and approve this video :3

  • I saw this video back in the early 80s and have loved this song ever since. Nick's had quite a consistent career and is it just me or does the place they are playing at look the exact same as where Elvis Costello and the Attractions filmed the Oliver's Army video? It would make sense because both were once signed to Stiff records.

  • For all you guys who that today cruel to be kind was the way forget about it

  • Carlene Carter Cash yeah, those ones

  • Will never forget that Nick said...and I quote.." Carlene puts the cunt back in country " 1 of my favourite quotes ever. BTW gotta love Dave Edmunds.....

  • @peezed1 I thought that was actually Carlene's line...spoken right in front of her mom and "The Reverend" when she opened one of her shows. Either way it's a great line!

  • i used to dislike htis song but now i like it

  • Great song! Ever met Mr. Lowe? Quite the gentleman...

    ZVEX

  • GrandPa Zeb Walton inspired this song

  • We saw him sing this song last night with Wilco at the Uptown Theater in KCMO. He's still got it!

  • Wow, takes me back to the days of the start of MTV.

Astronaut on the moon with the MTV flag! 1980

All music videos, no shows or commercials.

    Thanks for the memory.

  • Must have listened to this album 5000 times during 1979. It stayed in my tape deck well into 1980.

  • I seen Nick Lowe in 1989 and a great support to Elvis Costello

  • The Producer on the First Costello Albums.. Talented.

  • My favorite song by a truly underrated artist

  • Im 14. ..... and this songs pretty dope.

  • I did not read all of the comments, so forgive me if this has already been asked:

Was that Carlene Carter in this video?

  • @southroncross yes they were married for a while

  • Can't believe this came out in 79' I always thought this song came out in the sixties

  • love the strumming guitars. Great sound.

  • Ha ha sevoak! That has made my morning! Can't stop laughing when I wanted to say that I listened to this album over and over and over when it came out. Excellent album and of course this song, beautiful

  • Thanks good post!!!!!!

  • now kid rock

  • Is that Joe Flaherty the camera dude

  • Yup, you should be at your wit's end. Cant' help it because I'm a Goddess. Gotta be Cruel to be Kind!

  • great song to sing along with, lead or backing vocals, lol.

  • im 17 and this is one of my favorite songs of all time

  • you know i used to hate this song but down the road it soundz pretty good

  • Does anyone know if they are still married? I hope so, they look cute ^_^

  • @lifeinpictures Sadly, they're not. They divorced in 1990. If it's any help, from what I've read it was an amicable divorce and they remain on speaking terms although they've both since remarried.

  • Dave Edmunds is the driver

  • Who's driving the limo at the end of clip? Lol

  • What a Great Song!!

  • This was nicks actual wedding

  • Well I do my best to under-stand dear.

    But you still mystify

    And I wanna know why.

  • I'm only 58 and I love this song.

  • @sevoak ONLY 58

  • @sevoak You have very taste-I love this song too.

  • @sevoak I'm only 54 and I like it too. ;-)

  • @sevoak it's a great song that will last forever :)

  • @sevoak "Only?"

  • thats carlene carter as the bride!!! hot damn!!! shes a young un!

  • Brings back some fond memories of listening to the BBC and US Armed Forces Radio while up in the Fulda Gap looking over the border at the Russian tanks in the distance. That song was an anthem of sorts and I will take that memory with me when i go......Doesn't sound like good times but they truly were.Mr Lowe's music made it all tolerable

  • toe tappy tune and damn fine lyrics "though you say you're my friend, I am at my wits end"

  • great song!

  • This is one of those songs that you will never forget where you were and what you were feeling. Great damn tune;-)...:p!

  • @f0urn0nbl0nde It has that radio feel to it, and that's how I'll first remember it, and then I went out and bought the 45. Great tune!

  • Nice!

  • OMG - been years since I heard this. So happy!

  • I was madly in love with someone else who appears in the video -- feels like yesterday -- but thought then and always will that Nick is one of the finest musicians I ever heard (or met) and hot, hot, hot too. Kiddies... he was the sexiest thing on two legs (trust me). Prob'ly still is, dunno... and his music never feels old.

  • This same album included Nick's country rave-up "Without Love," which was eventually covered by Johnny Cash, who, of course, was Carlene Carter's dad (or step-dad, I can't remember)....who was Nick's wife. And the bride here.

  • love this song. love this man. hecko.

  • great !!!

  • Love this song! I remembered it when I saw Letters to Cleo perform it in the movie "10 Things I Hate About You." Awesome song!

  • Ten Things I Hate About You !!!!!

  • I'm back in summer of '79 every time I hear this. I'm working again at the local bakery, cleaning baking pans, sweeping and mopping dough encrusted floors. My boss is yelling at us like slaves, "i want to be able to eat an egg off this floor." And I'm also joking around with a lgirl from school who works with me. Her name is Natalie and she keeps batting her eyes, shaking her 70's hair and flirting, but playing so hard to get. "Cruel to be kind," I guess that's what Nat was being with me.

  • This song makes me happy! :)

  • That would be his EX-wife, the daughter of June Carter Cash

  • This song reminds me of hurricane Frederick in September of '79. School had been canceled for the day and the power had gone out. I recall sitting in my room looking out the window at trees as they bent back and forth to the point that you expected them to snap. We had a battery operated radio on in the house in case of tornado warnings and such. This song was played several times throughout the day and evening.

  • Who the he'll is driving the limo at the end

  • @nikonguy102 Dave Edmunds. The wedding shots are his actual wedding, and that is his real wife. D~

  • Saw him open for the great Wilco on Thursday. Hasn't lost a step, fantastic performance!

  • Brilliant

  • Jesus this is one of the videos that defined early MTV. Peace, Love and Understanding, indeed.

  • ONLY Nick Lowe could strum a 5 string bass guitar like it was the lead! LOVE IT!!!

  • nae slf?

  • The adorable Carlene Carter playing the role of Nick's wife (was this their actual wedding? It wouldn't be past Nick to do that). She is an excellent songwriter in her own right. They are divorced now. After some meaningful artistic and financial success, she went through a difficult time with drugs, but survived and last I heard, doing well.

  • @gmartinz01 I think the wedding scenes are indeed home movies of their actual wedding...how cool is that??!

  • @gmartinz01 I believe the wedding scenes are in fact his actual wedding. At least that's what I've been told since 1979..

  • @MarkSentMe If you watch the youtube video, Nick Lowe interview on David Letterman, Nick does in fact state this is video from his actual wedding. Very neat indeed!

  • I loved this song when it first came out in '79 (when I was 9yrs old) and all these years later, I love it just as much. I can never get tired of listening to it.

  • Saw Nick opening for Wilco last night, his songwriting has continued to evolve and he kicked the show off in legendary style!

  • ingleses a traducir haber que digo, jajajajjaja me gusta mucho le vídeo peor es muy antiguo , no?

  • I'm a sperm cell in a 14-year-olds left testicle. I know I'll probably end up in a Kleenex and flushed down the toilet, but if I ever do get to an egg and make a person, I know we'll this like type of music better than whatever they are playing in 2028. Wonder how I'm using the internet? There's a Starbuck's down here with free WiFi. Yeah, those fuckers are everywhere!!!

  • @agedude ... Great Comment! You should write comedy!

  • He was so cute. One of my favorite musicians. I remember when he married her (Carlene Carter, daughter of June) ... I think they are divorced now.

    :)

  • @Scarlett4Zanzibar They've been divorced for decades. If I remember correctly, she left him for Charlie Sexton back in the '80s.

  • He was so cute. One of my favorite musicians. :)

  • just beautiful

  • this is classic rock ! its great

  • The Safari in Burbank?

  • @cowperson37

what ?? The Safari Hotel off of Olive??

  • the car

  • oh yeah guess you're right. sorry thanks tjc.

  • thats barney bubbles with the camera isnt it?

  • @beauregardChumpsley I think that was Terry Williams with the camera.

  • One of the dozen or so Perfect Pop Songs ever written IMO

  • 15 dislikes?? you must be drinking 40 ouncers, because you have no idea what nick lowe has done for british rock and pop... it is time for you to "Stop All your Sobbing"???How bout "Peace, Love, and Understanding".... "Girls Talk".... How bout " When I Write the Book about my Love"... He produced all of them, and you 15 people have no idea.So sad. Go buy another 40 ouncer (all you can probably deal with. So sad for you 15.

  • @djtvc15 those 15 probably never got past mtv pop mentality of music....

  • Bubble gum pop from about 1974, but so fun!

  • @KB4QAA - Try 1979 :)

  • The Bride looks like Carlene Carter. Love this song

  • @bribet100 It is. They're humorously reenacting their wedding. The limo driver is Dave Edmunds

  • @bribet100 his bride was carlene carter, he married her. good eyes there!

  • @bribet100 it is Carlene Carter....

  • I pooped in a reverb channel on the 4th beat! Not bad for a crusty dandy!!!!!

  • I'm only 20 and I love this, and the person that made me love it is MY DAD :) x

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx I was 20 when it came out. LOL

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx . Ditto. But I'm 40.

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx so sick of these unoriginal comments. I'm only 12, I'm only 18...but I love this song. Nobody cares how old you are...it's just annoying.

  • @Catandthespoon - Who cares whether the comments are unoriginal or original? Some of us are just reflecting because the song evokes memories and we remember where we were or how old we were when we first heard it. If someone mentions their age, that's hardly something to get uptight about. Relax... :)

  • @JulieB1023 I'm just trying to be cruel to be kind in my criticism...in the right measure, of course.

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx your father is a very, very wise man. Nick Lowe is one of the greats. Hard to find talent like him anymore.

  • @gecco2003 Luckily for you he's still recording and touring. He has a brand new album out. Buy it. Although, well, he does mostly country now, but I've been loyal for over 30 years. Just saw him last year with Graham Parker and it was incredible.

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx Nick Lowe made you love it, your dad merely exposed you to it. Right?

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx i'm 17 and I find it through a random WOW video from an unknown uploader. s:

  • @xTheBritishLadyCx i'm 18 yo and find it cause i love old music...

  • The intro to this song is one of purest musical statements I've heard in pop music. To start, the drums are not fancy, yet fully support the guitair phrasing perfectly and get us to the verse with excitement. Strumming guitairs in each channel establish the tempo securing and lay a melody base for Nick's pithy vocal. The bass dutifully mimes the guitars. And expertly, the production is Motownified with a simple tamborine in a reverb chamber on the 4th beat of every bar to keep things hopping!

  • noooooo!!!!!

  • I heart Basher!

  • Still a fantastic song years later!!!!

  • It means the truth hurts, but love tells the truth...

  • wondering where the scenes were shot. the car and driver were oriented just like here in the Stattes. Great song. And terrific video. Thanks for posting.

  • @mnestrt

At least the authentic wedding scenes would be shot in California since that's where they were married August 18, 1979.

  • Stiff records I believe you neglected Ian Dury and The Blockheads

  • 14 people are cruel not kind

  • does anyone think that nick lowe and gram parsons kinda look alike?

  • Dave Edmunds

  • The bride in the video is Carlene Carter, daughter of June Carter Cash & step daughter of Johnny Cash..Carlene is singer in her own right,~I Fell in Love~

  • Would have never known this song existed had it not been for 10 Things I Hate About You. One of the catchiest songs ever.

  • How did this only make it to no.12 in the charts????!!! I'd have bought it..... if I wasn't -1 years old at the time!!

  • love this! so great you posted it. Thanks!!

  • i hear ya downriggers

  • How many songwriters have the genius to rhyme "bonafide" with "coincide"? Love it!

  • @tjsbigidea Right??

  • @tjsbigidea Of al the songs ever recorded this has to be the only one!

  • Um, love the song...no question there...tho can anyone tell me what the firetruck he's playing??? What is that yellow instrument he is playing in the video? Bass? Guitar? Something else? Please, Help, it's driven me crazy since I first saw this vid on Mtv a couple billion years ago...Thanks in advance!

  • @MayarO1313 It's definitely a bass. Looks like a 5 string. It looks a little confusing at first since he's playing with a pick.

  • @ryanbmx5 - it's an 8-string...could be a bass...check out 0:27, good shot of the head but fuzzy on the logo...Hamer? Kramer? I know Kramer made 8-string basses, check out Cheap Trick live vids...Thanks for the reply!

  • @MayarO1313 Yes. it's a Hamer 8 string. Had the same one in black back in the day. Signal was split between an Ampeg SVT amp with folded horn and a Fender Twin Reverb amp that ever so slightly over driven.

  • @mrmichaelsd - Thank You So Very Much! I can say right now that Nick is one talented man, saw him playing a bass just by himself closing out a show (I think it was Entertainment Tonight?) playing "All Men Are Liars" and singing it, and busted tail trying to find it for years...when I found the studio version, it wasn't as good as his doing it solo...anyone remember which show, or happen to have the clip?

  • WHAT DOES THIS SONG MEAN SOMEBODY?

  • I work at a familly dollar and everyone once in a while i hear a song that i like...need i say more ;D

  • Brings back a few memories

  • Samantha and I decided to meet at Napoleon Bonaparte's Pizza shop that September '79 evening.. Ordered a 4.99 Pepporoni and two drink special. She and I sat and shot the s**t for two hours. When we started eating Sam was just my next door buddy, but after "Cruel to be Kind," and a couple of ELO songs, I really started to dig Samantha as more than just a bud. After a trip to the Custard Stand we decided a trip out to the beach might be in order. Sand, surf, and sweet dreams.

  • What a fantastic song. Buddy Holly would be proud of what Lowe & Co accomplished, with this one.

  • What aq great song and great in the movie 10 things I hate about you

  • thank you for post. this IS the best version. by a mile.

  • Stiff label's slogan: "It it's not stiff, it isn't work a f***

LOL! Any label that can come up with that slogan has GOT to be cool. :-)

  • artist today cant touch a song like this on any level..

  • @chisoxfan708 Calling today's pop stars artists is a stretch, but your point is well taken.

  • Last time I saw this video was ages ago...Thanks :)
