Can anyone help me understand the difference between this and the SL MK II? Like what are the advantages and disadvantages of both when compared with each other?
@Dreadkid08 Impulse is the most recent Novation controller, they both come with Automap and give you extensive DAW/plug-in control. The SL MkII is Novation's flagship controller and is more expensive.
The SL MkII range has an additional 8 pots, more assignable buttons (with LEDs behind the buttons) touch sensitive controls, an even larger LCD display and the speed dial knob. Check out the Novation website for more detailed info.
@NovationTV whens the sl mkiii coming out? i want to know as being a student (broke) and doing music production i need the latest gear but i can't buy it after something recently came out
@Dreadkid08 I picked the Impulse over the SL MkII mainly because the Impulse has 9 sliders and the SL only 8 (I don't get why; seriously: both the Akai MPK and the Novation Remote SL lack the 9th slider which is fundamental for Hammond control). Also, the Impulse has no AC power connector, it's only USB powered (though you can just buy an AC/USB adapter for 10 €).
Hi, great video you've made here. If it's possible could you tell me how you got your automap working. I've followed the tutorial on the disc and have ableton 8.2.6 and te latest automap but I still can't get it working properly. Is it possible to send me your midi preference settings?
If you assign an encoder to a dry/wet knob in ableton that is at 50%, would that encoder "move" to 50%? (not physically move, but change the value?)
At the moment, if i turn a knob to 100% then assign it to something in ableton that is at 50%, when i turn the knob down, the value jumps to 100% and then starts to decrease. Is this still the case..? I hope that makes some sense!
@88josh88josh It sounds like you are referring to Pot Pickup Mode not being selected in Live. Please contact technical support with a screenshot of your MIDI Sync Preferences (check that Pot Pickup is selected).
lol i just returened my axiom pro but anyhow i guess i will buy this one instead. it seems to have taken evrything that the MKII had good in it and that the axiom pro had good and made the so far best multi-controller keyboard.
The keys on this keyboard feel extremely good. Like the weights on the axiom 49 feel all loose and not comfortable to play on, but this one felt amazing in comparison. I'd definitely reccommend giving it a tr if you're looking to buy a keyboard controller
Looks really cool! Novation really makes some of the most interesting and useful controllers! 2 humble suggestions:
1st, i would find a 37-key version the optimum compromise between size and playability. So please consider adding 1 to the line-up.
And 2nd, consider shipping them all with a basic size-fitting dust-cover. It'll cost you a few pennies, and go a long way to improve overall longevity in your average studio.
This is a potential buy if the pads, keys and mod wheels are better than what the SL MK II has to offer. I don't mind loosing the placement of the SL MK II's screens if the hardware is overall a step up. Looking forward to finding out more, and if it turns out to be a worthy buy, I'm totally happy with selling my SL MK II to buy a Impulse and keeping the change! (;
@HELLSPAWN1973 Don't get me wrong, this looks like a great Midi controller but surely it should have had the touch sensitive knobs and the big ass display off the SLMK2. If this is the direct replacement for the SLMK2 then something is not good in the world of Novation but if this just an addition to their Midi controller range then thats great! These are not as expensive as the SLMK2
Please do a "real" Feature/Review-Video! Not that Pseudo-Artist-Crap! We wanna know more about AM4 the Keys, the Ableton Live Integration (I muss a Up- & Down-Button for Clips under the Pads.
@summerWTFE Very true it looks really cheap and limited compared to remote mk2 but i think its made to rival the axiom series witch it seems to do pretty well
I'm a huge fan of Novation and Focusrite and have spent a fortune on their stuff over the years. However, Automap is a huge steaming pile of shite IMO.
So basially it's an M-Audio Axiom with automap, not really bringing anything new to the table when it comes to controllers are we...sorry to be critical but seriously, what happened to form and function?
Pretty nice controller, however, I've recently purchased an SL Mk II and do not see much new on offer besides better quality drum pads and dedicated transport controls. No more touch sensitive knobs and faders?? That said, I think Novation has the best feeling non-hammer action keyboards. I also have a Supernova II XL and it feels better than most synths on the market today. I'd just like to get Automap to work with OS-X Lion already.
@DanBurton190 : SLMK2??? No way. The keys of the SLMK2 are bad and feels very cheesy and cheap. I prefer the impulse a lot - and it seem to be much better than die Axiom Pro from M-Audio!
There are still some People with hardware-synths who need 16-Byte Sysex-Commands and Novation-products always had a problem with that and support only 14 Byte-Commands and only work with some old Roland-Keyboards.
if there was a 88 key at least it'll have something to offer to the market. this thing looks so clunky and ugly with nothing interesting to offer. first novation product i'm disappointed in.
@pinksue Thats your opinion. I think it looks cool. And its not more tailored toward Ableton, it is just that Ableton has more features when it comes to the sequencing than other D.A.W.s do, and they are simply giving u the ability to easily controll these options right from your controller. And the auto mapped clip launching buttons are only available on units such as the APC-40, and Maschine with Ableton template, so that is really cool too. And just so u guys know I am mainly a PT 9 user.
hey, i got the impuls and i was wondering how to change the tempo on the drum pads

So would you have to hook it up to a DAW to get sounds? Or does it already comes with some preloaded out of the box?

Okay I got a question for anyone, aside from using this as a MIDI controller, can I use this as a regular keyboard? Cuz I wanna use this for both
Moscalicious 2 months ago
@Moscalicious MIDI keyboards are just controllers, like a computer keyboard. What you need is a synth with MIDI output to suit your needs.

Why, God, why no 88-key version with weighted piano style keys?
Trigering loops and warping arpegios is fine,
but some of us like weighted keys with great feel to trigger notes, musically,
with detailed sensitivity both in velocity and in aftertouch.
Please Novation, make a 88 weighted key version, too!
