@TheTenaciousTim It's from the movie Alice's Restaurant. It's based on Arlo Guthrie's hit 1970's song of the same name. It's a decent movie If you ever get a chance you should check it out
I just found out that Arlo is a registered Republican. Still in shock. But he is a good Republican, and we need good Republicans. Anyway, Peace and Happy Thanksgiving!
I got to visit the former Alices's Restaurant, (actually The Back Door Cafe) and now Teresa's Stockbridge Cafe for many years running, last summer. The town's a bit more fancy shmancy than it was 45 years ago.
If Aah'd-a smoked in th' militaaary, why, shoot, I guess'n Aah'd be a 'complished killer an' leeder bah now, wit' a thousn' co'pses o' so unner mah belt, an' a ches'ful of medals an' ribbons make th' women go blin', yessiree an' sho'ya'right. ;])
I still listen to this song with my dad and I wasn't even born when this all happened but I love this song and I even got my friends lovin it too and we talk about it all the time. Favorite line: Shrink, I wanna kill...
Those were weird and scary times back in the 60's when I was in high school. My lottery number was 138. Somehow I survived it all OK (I was never drafted).
@gondwanalon I find it really disheartening that the U.S. military had the gall to call it a "lottery". And that's because, obviously, when you hear the word "lottery", you expect the chance to receive something GOOD.
reminds me of New Orleans Customs house; May 18, 1966; the day I enlisted in the USAF; 4 years of total bullshit. I came home from Vietnam with a shoebox full of medals; and was advised bye an employment counsellor NOT to put I was a Vietnam Vet. Fuck the Military.
@earthwrmjim They did indeed. I saw it in Waikiki with a bunch of crazy Navy guys after almost dying in the Great Lunalilo Massacre. That's a long story. Maybe I'll make a YouTube video about it some day.
Wow! That's M. Emmet Walsh as the Group W sargeant. I will always remember him as the madman in the movie "The Jerk", Greatest role actor in Hollywood!
Convicted serial killer Rodney James Alcala asked jurors to spare him the death penalty Tuesday, by playing a portion of Alices Restaurant, the rambling 18-minute Vietnam War protest song by folk singer Arlo Guthrie.
"Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth...I mean kill, Kill, kill kill."
No, no... you are correct that there was no draft. He said that a couple of people sang Alice's restaurant in the recruiters office... that is different.
in a dumb sort of way: the whole song is supposedly about being against the Viet-Nam war and the draft...... to sing it in 81 is stupid, hence even the recruiters laughing about it.
bear in mind i used to sing parts of it going through Infantry AIT at Ft Benning in '83, and continued to do so for the next 20 years of my "career" in the Reserves, as well as to play it at home every T-day... so maybe i'm stupid too, or maybe the song resonates..... %-)
Lol, I love how some of them are father-rapers, but their All guys.
They missed out of a bit tho...the origional song says: that he said he littered and they all shuffled away, then he said 'and being a public nuciance' and they all shuffle back.
@HiPpPiEcHiKcKiE i onnly bought this on itunes last night and nearly actually crapped myself when i saw that it was 18 minutes long still awesome song
@thewho311-- I can sing you the whole 18 minute song...I do lose my breath some during the court scene with the circles and arrows and paragraphs on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against them...
Too bad they didn't make it true to the album.
