Quebec organizers of the show was trying to demean her by calling her an english artist because they felt dissed that she went and betrayed them (quebec) by singing in the English American market. so they were trying to marginalize her and mock her by calling her an english artist so she refused the award and told them to stuff it basically. she told them she's proud of her english albums and can be/sing whatever she wants.

I was born and raised in Montreal. In fact, I learned French before I learned English. I am just fascinated that while these convictions were so strong that she would publicly thumb her nose at something that represented the English demographic, she now not only lives in an English country but also performed an all English show in Vegas for the last several years. @teniesea101 You probably don't know that the language in Québec is something that really matters and that we're proud of, it's always been a fight to keep it and to protect it from the english influences all over us. The category in which she was nominated was: english band or singer of the year. She's not an english speaker. She did this to show that she matters and that French for her is important. She considers herself as a Francophone artist so she didn't felt like accepting the trophy because she didn't fit in this category. The speech was cut, though, because she proposed to rename the category "artist achieving the most success outside of Quebec" and since then, it's the category's name!

I was born and raised in Montreal. In fact, I learned French before I learned English. I am just fascinated that while these convictions were so strong that she would publicly thumb her nose at something that represented the English demographic, she now not only lives in an English country but also performed an all English show in Vegas for the last several years. @teniesea101 You probably don't know that the language in Québec is something that really matters and that we're proud of, it's always been a fight to keep it and to protect it from the english influences all over us. The category in which she was nominated was: english band or singer of the year. She's not an english speaker. She did this to show that she matters and that French for her is important. Too succeed, you have to sing in english, it's not a secret. But she is proud to be French.
