there were spaces in east Germany, but they were just differently produced, used and organised as the ones you are brought up with in California. Spaces that are not spaces can not be experienced, not be conceptualised, they do not exist. Space becomes space when it is social (and thus political)

I don't have my video cam right now (it's my dad's cam, actually) so I can't post right away, but anyway, I'm really glad to discover your reply. I like your examples of borders between N&S Korea, dividing Germany, and surrounding California -- anyway I'll watch a couple more times, I'll give it some thought and get back to you soon :)
