you sholud hold the bases flat between you thumb and for finger, NOT around it, so, imagine a sandwhich, your figers are the bread, and the base is the filling. works fo me!
Im a guitarist and I just heard your "cramping" problem. I would recommend warming up your hands by stretching and flexing for 10 minutes before you do anything, especially your wrists. If your thumb or little finger goes numb its a problem with your neck/shoulder position. But hopefully that should help you out
Cool! What sort of warmup exercise would you suggest? I get the cramps around the base of my thumb and pinky. Those are th fingers I use to apply pressure to hold brushes and models.
