  • A living legend!

  • Its amazing how many samples are known better than the original...Coolio with Gangstas Paradise comes from this....Ice Ice Baby (Vanilla Ice) comes from Under Pressure (Queen)...Cant touch this (MC Hammer) comes from Superfreak (Rick James), Big Poppa (Notorious BIG) and Luxurious (Gwen Stefani) come from Between the Sheets (Isley Brothers), etc;, etc;

  • i like gangsta's paradise, but i like this so much more.

  • it's a brutal classic voodoo ass-ation spell

  • we listened to the three different versions (pastime paradise, gangsters paradise, and amish paradise) in ethics class today haha random.

  • once you listne to this one you cant ever go back to lsiten to coolio. Im an 80 kid and knew the stuff Stevie put out those years.I just call to say I love you etcToo synth driven to my taste,I just didnt know he had such trendsetters albums like innervisions ,song sin the key, talking book til later in my life. So IM still discovering all these gems, its not music to listen 1 time, you really need to explore these albums and hidden arrangements meanings.Just too much for the ear.another level

  • so coolio takes this then gets pissed when wierd al does a parody? ignorant asshole

  • It's a copycat chain LOL!

  • Hare Krishna on background vocals!

  • When I was an 8 year old kid I used to sing the words to Paranoid by Black Sabbath to this tune by mistake and vice versa. Much to my older brothers joy. My brother was a Sabbath fan and my sister a Stevie fan. You can sing "Finished with my woman cos she couldn't help me with my mind" directly over this song and I did it innocently by accident. Paranoid was 6 years before this. But it's still a great record. Great memories for me. Shame about Coolio though. Really do not like him. Talentless.

  • @HughieDixon Never heard "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath. I'll have to check it out next... but Stevie Wonder sampled part of this melody from Johann Sebastian Bach, the classical composer... Black Sabbath might have done the same... Someone once said "Good artist borrow, great artists steal".

  • @b2223967 It's not that much like Paranoid but as a child I accidentally used to sing the lyrics of one to the tune of he other. You can see how the melodies can be muddled up in a childs brain. I'm not suggesting Stevie stole it, for a start the Black Sabbath song is heavy metal. I love Stevie and Sabbath. Most music in fact. It's hard not to steal because there are only a certain amount of notes etc.

  • Coolio should be shot for murdering this song. God, bring back Tupac and take Coolio

  • @HughieDixon you stupid human, NOONE should be shot

  • @wolfdegol You not human then? He should shot out of a canon then.

  • Chris rene brought me here.

  • wonderful song. It brings me many memories. Thumbs up!!

  • Check out the link to the video of Stevie and Coolio singing a collaboration of Pastime Paradise and Gangsta's Paradise live. Obviously Stevie must have been honored rather than upset by the fact that Coolio covered his song. We should therefore have that same attitude.

  • @drfenderfunk right, it's funny when people get pissed about a cover but don't realize you have to get permission. If you know someone didn't get permission then you can be pissed.

  • ...never be matched by any artist over the past thirty years, or even many of the artists of the '70s. Even if U2 covered this song in the 80's it wouldn't be nearly as good, because Stevie's 70's music was on a completely different level than anyone else's has ever been. Any artist covering this music is like John Williams trying to be as good of a composer as Mozart. As good as John is, he and anyone else would know that to accomplish such a feat is impossible.

  • If it weren't for Coolio, people probably would have totally forgotten about this song, because, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't even think this song was even played at all on the radio when Songs in the Key of Life was first released in '76. Of course, that was back when people actually bought and listened to albums in their entirety, but anyway, Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" is a good song too, and definitely one of the best rap songs of all time IMO. Stevie was a genius that could...

  • @drfenderfunk You bring up a good point. Love it or Hate It, Hip Hop exposes us to songs that came before.

  • @mohinderbauer great point ..listen to the entire album..be inspired ..56 .Canadian .This is the best album ever.

  • @MrRp25 if not the best, right up there along with What's Going On-never thought Stevie could surpass Innervisions but he may have done it!!!!

  • This is the most important song ever made....I dare someone to think of another.

  • Thank you Stevie Wonder for making me stop believing that Gangsta's Paradise is one of the best songs of all time.

  • A real music master...

  • YOUR CHILDHOOD IS A LIE.

  • I like Coolio's version more (because i'm raised with it practic) but i have more respect for the original version :)

  • @Mekkalover Coolio's is called GANGSTAS paradise.

  • @PyrosTheStickman I know but everything else is the same :)..

  • Thumbs Up if Gangsta's Paradise brought you here

  • Who the fuck is Coolio?

  • I havent heard this in forever :D

  • this guy stole this beat from coolio

  • @jloch85 Yepp, totally stole it 19 years before he even thought of it. How dare Stevie Wonder do that! (Go home troll.)

  • @jloch85 No, Coolio sampled the beat from Stevie Wonder.

  • @jloch85 AHAHAHAHA STUPID DUMB FUCKING MORON DOESNT KNOW WHO STEVIE WONDER IS PISS OFF!!!

  • @jloch85 idiot -____-

  • @jloch85 really.. Stevie Wonder is gonna steal a beat from a nigga scrub like Coolio. who the fuck is coolio anyways? one hit wonder ass motherfucker who can't even hack it in the hip hop genre... cake eater troll

  • @jloch85 the original (stevie wonder) version came out before coolio was even in high school. it takes like 3 seconds of your time to verify this.

  • @kratm these young kids only understand the digital age where sampling is king. I grew up around musicians so understand and appreciate real music not sampled stuff. I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder.I have alot of his music from the 60s, 70, 80s,and 90s. Coolio was a little kid when this song came out. alot of Mr.Wonders songs are still relevant today. Stevie was many generations ahead of his time when it came to creativity.

  • @sctwnd74 i get what you are saying, but do you really want to be that guy? Who is to say that sampling is any less valid a form of music than any other? Try listening to some Beck. But yes, praise be to Stevie.

  • @jloch85 Dud,e that is hilarious. I guess most people on YouTube don't have a sense of humor.

  • @Nertrender - it's unbelievable

  • @jloch85 you should have thrown in something about how Stevie Wonder hopes to be as good as the Legendary Justin Beiber. Ha!

  • @jloch85 it's more like the other way around

  • copy in a copy in a copy in a copy?

2pac gangstas paradise in amish paradise in coolio's gangstas paradise in stevie wonders?

    COPYCEPTION

  • @TomIsAwesome123 yodawg we heard you like to copy in your copy so we put a copy in your copy so you can copy

  • And Coolio gets pissed when Weird Al satirizes HIS song!

  • @schifferbrainz wait, he did?

  • eargasm:)

  • I love this album.

  • @baysidebunny One of the best ever, bayside.

  • :O :O :O :O

I never expected this! Wow! I thought I was in love with Coolio ft. L.V - Gangsta's Paradise but when I heard this... Stevie Wonder is awesome! Great voice.

  • wait...havn´t i heard this before!

  • You ignorant bastards, Amish Paradise is a parody (well, not a parody exactly) of Gangsta's Paradise, not of the original Pastime Paradise. God DAMN I feel like I'm alone in this world.

  • @Inkubzz

You are not alone in this world my friend :)

  • Steve stole this song from Al Yankovic!! Stop this abomination!!!! Stop it now!!

  • @naumrusomarov very funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The greatest album ever recorded.

  • just lost respect for coolio...

  • coolie didn't stole it but he sampled it. but coolie's is more catchy

  • @barneypwnedyou Coolio's is a blatant rip off and because he mentions "gangsta's"( tm) it's going to ring true to more retards and increase the sales. Coolio is a hoooge bellend with a well sampled one hit back catalogue. His drug riddled premature demise can't come soon enough.

  • wow just now i found out that Coolie stole this from Him Haha 2011 wtf how did i not know that

  • can anybody tell me what the percussion element on the 2nd and 4th beat is (starting in bar 3)? i simply can't decipher it. sounds a bit like handclaps, but then again no...

  • @nvkrog Pretty sure that is a wood block, homie.

  • @Rochefaton really? kind of sounds like wooden handclaps to me :)

  • @Rochefaton actually i think it's a clapboard...?

  • I have the dual vinyl LP record of this album, awesome!

  • @YucobRylander Thank you very much for your very kind words. I am glad my statement made an impression on you. The problem with music today is that it is too commercialized, the premise for making such garbage is to get paid. Please do not fall into this trap, you still hear songs from this CD played more than 30 years after it first came out. WIKIPEDIA has info on this very CD!! So please, if you want to start, cover a classic, then work your way up. If God allows me to live to hear, I will!

  • I was gonna leave a comment. But you guys scare me.

  • @mattroks101 Hon, do not fear, there is no one who can do anything to you on this site other than give you correct or incorrect facts. I am very much into music, I will NOT back down on what I KNOW. Nor would I purposely misinform you. Feel free to leave your comments, we are in America, Freedom of Speech is our First Amendment. Personally, I would like to hear your opinion of this classic. I intend to conduct this song using my alma mater high school orchestra this song one day. It's my dream!

  • @mattroks101 you did leave a comment

  • Stevie is the bomb!

  • i cant believe stevie wonder ripped off coolio. all he did was make the instrumental sound more shitty and change the lyrics.

  • @metalmaniacmat You're a damn FOOL. Coolio released his *sampled from the chorus of Stevie Wonder's original* in late 1995. Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise" was released in 1976, and Coolio's version is directly sampled from this version you IDIOT.

  • @Lukapho ..... TROLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!

  • @metalmaniacmat Hon, I hate to tell you, but you might wish to check up on your knowledge of music, and what came from where first. Stevie Wonder indeed made his ultra classic, "Pastime Paradise" on his mega-selling album, "Songs In The Key of Life", in 1976. Coolio was probably just born around that time. I, however, was 13 years old, so I would know. You might wish to apologize and check the facts before you say such a thing. I also suggest you purchase the CD. It may cost, but is well worth!

  • @sapphyre7 you took my comment to heart, didnt you?

  • @metalmaniacmat Only because you speak with ignorance rather than intelligence. I repeat: purchase the CD, and listen CLOSELY to the lyrics... I say this with no malice meant, I simply hope to educate you on something you seem to know nothing about.

  • @sapphyre7 lol, i was just trolling. i already own the song

  • boss

  • I never knew that there existed an original to what i thought WAS the original.

Wow, internet really fucked me up good..

  • @zepkarsbo And this was inspired by Bach, apparently. J.S. Bach's Prelude No. 2 in C minor (BWV 847), according to Wikipedia. I just made a playlist about it.

  • @zepkarsbo Uh Yea!

  • @zepkarsbo Did you really think that rappers can make anything original?

  • @davortech why they not ?

  • @imperatore464 your an example, they all have horrible grammer. and spelling. they cant write songs of their own.

  • @raybies006 you listen my song right? and for you this is the shit ?

  • @davortech that is so damn ignorant. you shouldnt speak on what you dont know or understand. real creative hip hop is being made every day. whether or not you chose to hear it is a different story. the radio does not speak for rap music.

  • this one goes to fast

  • @NewShimmer

No, Stevie made the original of pastime paradise which led to coolio making gangsta's paradise which led to weird al making amish paradise.

  • This sounds arabian.

  • @chef197 Don´t u understand sarcasm.

  • Shame Stevie Wonder's version falls to obscurity when it was the original, and most people only know of Gangster's Paradise. And I adore Gangster's Paradise, but that's some kind of bullshit.

  • As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death...

  • @ToxicDuck13 I take a look at my life, and realize there's not much left!

  • This Got That Bounce To It

  • parodyed twice

  • @GamingBoy58 hahahaha that killed me, but Coolio's version was pretty dope though. Much respect to him

  • Thumbs up if Chris Rene brought you here!

  • @samheng29 Fuck off you cunt

  • Coolio brought it to our attention in new form, and now Chris Rene finds the tribute and delivers it again.

Thumbs up for Stevie! Hail to the KING!

  • lol first pastime paradise then gangsters paradise now amish paradise lol

  • @SuperRedHalo You forgot Tough Guys' Paradise by Australian band New Waver. It was released on their 1996 album "Mr Loser Boozer Goes to Town".

  • yay just heard chris rene's live performance :O same song.

  • Most people don't even know where Gangsta's Paradise and Amish Paradise stem from. The lyrics are nothing short of pure poetry expressed through music. Love it.

  • CHURN BUTTER ONCE OR TWICE

  • i knew coolio had this song from some where but stevie's version is better and more poetic.

  • @mnightshade107

    AND ORIGINAL

  • How can you not rap in the begining of the song? its impossible for me! hahaha

  • I love all the versions!

  • We sell quilts at discount price!

  • amish paradise owns pastime and gangstas .....pshhhh

  • lol,Coolio's song has really ruined this for me,all I can think of is Gangsta's Paradise

  • one of my favs from the genius that is stevie. his genius cannot be denied. the man is gifted.

  • THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD

  • All these comments bashing Coolio, geez. At least he put some emotion into the song and made it his own. Btw Stevie borrowed the notes used from Bach. It's extremely difficult nowadays to have a completely original idea. Just accept it and listen to the music.

  • @ForProfeit You comparing a Living Legend to Coolio? Coolio the Foolio I smack ya with my Toolio? PLEASE get educated Stevie Wrote his own stuff and has 22 Grammy Awards the most of any male Artist Ever. In 2009 he was named a United Nations messenger Of Peace and Coolio? 4-25 -2011 he was caught too high to work Stumbling and fumbling and rumbling on stage b4 being carted out like a drunk bum. Do not compare to STEVIE WONDER that is really missing the mark. Stevie great Coolio NOT!!!!

  • @ajushi10 I think you missed my point. I'm saying take the music for what its worth. Stevie Wonder, obviously a musical genius and prodigy, wrote a great song. Coolio, "straight up g-thug", sampled the song, which is a hip-hop standard, and I don't think it deserves the hate that its getting. It's not Coolio's fault that people didn't know that he sampled Stevie.

  • @ForProfeit Tell me when worshiping a thug has saved a life. Thug life is a Mirage just like the Dude who had the 2 words tattooed on his stomach who no longer is among us.Be completely original from Nothing on a piece of paper to something great, that is creating not recycling which is the excuse for lazy ass people who sample. Hip-Hop can and should be original.

  • @ajushi10 I'm not arguing with you, just saying that's the way it is.

  • Comment removed

  • I've said it before, but thanks for sharing all this great music Johnny

  • thankz for uploadin' I just knew Coolio's version so far...I love SW.."I just called to say I love you" brings up good memories;)

  • I didn't know Stevie did a version of Amish Paradise. ;-)

  • @NewShimmer ASSHOLE HE IS THE ORIGINAL WRITER AND PRODUCE OF THIS TRACK-DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST...LEMMING..

  • @NewShimmer Amish paradise was a parody of Gangster's paradise by Coolio, which was based off Stevie Wonder's Past time's paradise lol :D.

  • @NewShimmer THIS IS THE ORIGINAL VERSION.

  • @smackdaddy114 dude, no shit , its called a joke

  • @smackdaddy114 this song came 20 years before Amish paradise, use your brain

  • @smackdaddy114

I knew it was the original version. That's why I included the winking smiley to let people know I was in on the joke. I guess I'll have to put a disclaimer on my next post. THIS IS A JOKE - I'M NOT MESSING WITH STEVIE WONDER. I do like messing with Kanye though. If he gets mad, I'll invite him over for a nice package of fish sticks. I heard he likes them.

  • well all that debate about yesterday music and today's...crap is none sense. You dont need to be Einstein you just need 2 ears. Is copy and paste considered music? Then you are able to combine pieces of music to create one.Pieces of music already created and recorded. So lets be serius a Dj is a Dj, a singer is a singer and an artist is an Artist.Thats why none of those pop idols will ever come close to whiteney Houston,Shes not a singer shes an artist.and if you have 2 ears you know what Imsain

  • this is a great song but... why is he listing words with the suffix "-ation"...? that's the only thing i don't understand. can someone please explain it to me?

  • Absolutely love this song. Amazing how this song used to creep me out as a kid.

  • Fuck Coolio

  • @VillainAmage It's rare that a cover expresses more than the original.

  • Whaddya know, another rap crap song stole from an original. Gee, I never would have thought. Ever. Like not in a million years. Ever. *cough*

  • Did Stevie Wonder consciously give authorization to Mr Coolio to mistreat this beautiful song?

  • @geomusicmove I believe so. And it wasn't a mistreatment. The song Gangsta's Paradise was a different song based on this song. But Gangsta's Paradise also won Coolio an award as the song is also considered a good song making good use of Stevie Wonder's original music to preach the hardships of the gangsta life. Just because it's by someone like Coolio doesn't mean there's no message in the song. It's not like Weird Al who merely remade the song to be "funny". lol

  • @Axxidous Never heard Weird Al's version, well actually never heard weird Al...I'm sorry but 'hardships' of gangsta life? maybe you mean ghettoized, impoverished, life hardships. Gangters are as guilty as the system they portrait to despise, all they want it bling and flashy cars.#

On the other hand you can deliver your message using your own songs and material, that'd be more worthwile and original, things hip hop music lacks

  • @geomusicmove You've never watched Freedom Writers have you? :)

And maybe Coolio liked the rhythm of Stevie Wonder's song. So he's got good taste. And I don't think it'd be more worth while. Again, Stevie Wonder's song has a nice rhythm to it. Somehow I feel it was actually more worth while using it as an emotional reference.

As for hip hop these days, I don't recall most of them using existing song tunes, just having bland repetitive ones. most of them anyways, not all of them.

  • @Axxidous I agree to a degree, I can rhyme lol...one thing is to make a cover and another is to use someone else's tune as a background to your own lyrics, I call that lazy. I heard the other day a hip hop song that raps on top of Breakfast in America by Supertramp and sounds horrendous. I believe that the original composers and the hip hop guys do it to make a quick buck by using a recognizable tune. I've seen freedom writers, good film, but still, don't believe in the "plight" of gangters TBH

  • @geomusicmove It's only lazy depending on the motive you go at it with. A cover is technically more lazy as the artist creates NOTHING but a tribute. Writing new lyrics is like using the original song as a tribute for a new creation. He DID write lyrics either way. There is still creativity and meaning to the song. Half the song is also original melody.

There are times when they do it out of laziness, but not all the time and most hip hop songs do create their own music, and horribly. lol

  • @Axxidous Well...I only agree with the last two lines of your comment. There have been some good covers, such as Knocking at the heaven's door, (i'm no fan of G&R though) I don't think that's lazy. On the other hand Coolio's gangta's paradise has a different title to the original, many people wouldn't know who the real composer of the music is, and it wouldn't have been such a success if it hadn't been for the melody line, not the lyrics actually, it all sounds so churned out, hip hop I mean

  • @geomusicmove Sounds more like you have a thing against it due to it's genre and reputation more than how it was made. It's not Coolio's fault people don't know the original composer. I don't know how old you are but if it makes you feel any better, I'm only 19 and make it known to some people that this is the original song. :)

And actually the song was a success among some people for the melody, true, but amongst critics and more attentive people the lyrics are also a factor for it's message.

  • @geomusicmove I'm 40, so no, it doensn't make me feel any better that you're 19 LOL. You're right, I'm not convinced by hip hop music artistic value, anyone with a sense of rythm and a laptop can make music, to me it's like considering a dj to be an artist. I've played the guitar since I was 12 and peeled my fingertips off for ages to be able to play something decent. It's all too easy to grab a computer software, some plug-ins, build a loop and rap on top of that. Real songs have lyrics too

  • @geomusicmove Also, when you say it's also the gangsters' own fault, I only realized that the song "Gangsta's Paradise" agrees with you in the lines "Tell why are we so blind to see that the ones we hurt are you and me?" Just sayin.

And just because you don't believe it doesn't make it any less true. Not everyone is the same and not everyone has experienced what others must to understand why they make decisions. Psychology does play a role. At least Coolio tried to de-promote gang lifestyle lol

  • at 4:30 in the morning, I'm milking cows...

  • @pleasedontask

That made me quite honestly "lol".

  • :'( loving this :') this and the one by Ray....but the original is ALWAYS better

  • I don't the top comments funny :/

  • Awesome song, thanks to youtube for letting me discover who the original creator is to have created this music.

  • The sound of the violin is the best ;)

  • Stevie is a God among men.

  • this song is too short :)

  • I love both versions :)

  • Actually, the fact that we can go back to this, and it is SICKER then the remakes... well i think that says something important

  • Stevie come to Turkey please we love you very much...

  • just to all the people that are saying nobody comes up with their own music, try coming up with something of your own, either somebody has already done it, or it wil sound like shit

  • @h0ck3ystar2 Dont say that. Its like saying everthing has alredy been explored or invented, therefore no need of researching new science or technology

  • @h0ck3ystar2 Oh come on man. Obviously you're not in touch with The Muse, and you know no one who is. New things exist out there. It's just our shitty music industry and mass media that gives us what we want: Pure shit. Of course you think there's nothing new, no one has dropped it in front of your apathetic face.

  • Pastime Paradise

  • is this the real song really wow

  • Amazing song. Never knew that Gangsta's Paradise came from this until recently.

  • Stevie Wonder is number one!!!! he is the best.....Love from Türkiye.

  • Stevie wrote his own shit.

maybe that is why he got all those grammys

  • @thepheoniix Better than Stevie? Smokey Robinson, but no one else. Sorry Lennon- you borrowed from Howlin Wolf, BB King, and the rest of the Mississippi Mud Crew. Stevie is the man.

  • @Mantra531

If I followed your advice maybe I would have had 41 thumbs up!!

    I am crushed!
