classical forms and styles are good to watch but are they effective in actual combat?

Classical forms are for practicing your technique and also training your mind. You need to have two modes to be a warrior. Notice Kung fu, Taekkyun, Karate fighters, they are the nicest people you'll ever meet. But they also can hurt people. You have your person mode, and you have your killer mode. During forms you need to think KILL, and then once you stop your form, try to think normal person mode again. You have to know when and how to control your anger and kill mode, that's why forms.

@marvzsz the actual applications of traditional forms and styles should only be used in life-threatening situations, for they target very vulnerable spots and can be deadly, that is why Kung Fu-looking styles are not seen usually in tv combat shows. In sports combat, like UFC, Kung Fu will be as good as the effort you put into your training with those kinds of rules, where only punching, kicking and grappling is allowed.

Well, in it´s origin yes, and some capoeira is still very "pure". But a lot of modern capoeira cannot denny the influence of oriental martial arts, particularly Jiu Jitsu. But i would say african martial arts in general, and african diaspora related arts, don´t share common ancestry with asian martial arts in general.

Here's the real version: Grandmaster Su Kong Tai Djin fled the temple when the Emperor's troops were raiding and burning. That Grandmaster then taught Ie Chang Ming outside of the temple and he went on to be the next Grandmaster. Ie Chang Ming then fled Chinese communism and went to Indonesia where he taught the current Grandmaster, Sin Kwand The'.

I think you should check your history.

Keep in mind that, no matter, how skilled the fighter, bare handed combat gives almost no force multiplier in combat. The greatest fighter in the world will loose to 3 men with guns - or even 3 men with swords.

Simple martial skills that have been used in Europe for centuries, like a pike formation, greatly enhance a fighting force's strength.
