The Air Force was inexplicably wiped out by the alien Gunships. Yet those same ships have trouble hitting ground forces apparently....

All the larger ships have shields that block incoming attacks. The caveat is that you can hit them on their underside when they open their deployment hatches to drop bugs or gunships. As for the giant bugs, they have underground nests. So the game is set up for ground troops to deliver the necessary blows to beat the aliens.

infinite ammo, which i thought was a bit lame, but on some of the later levels you need it as there are hundreds of enemies to defeat.

do you also get to buy upgrades in the game or is that why there are power-ups? and do those power-ups stay till the and of the level or are they permanent?

the power ups are permanet the armor increses ur health the weapon icons give u new weapons n trust me like overworld sayed u will need it
