Wow, never even knew Emus could swim! I have been thinking of getting two pet emus and putting them with our chickens and use them as guard animals. i have heard that they do a very good job at keeping the foxes away. does anybody have any experience with this?
Heh -- I remember paleontologist Robert Bakker's offhand remark in The Dinosaur Heresies that any large modern ground bird, if thrown into water, swims very well. They're as bouyant as humans (maybe mroeso with their light bones and all the air trapped in their feathers), and anything with feet can paddle enough to have fun -- cf. horses, who have skinny legs but love swimming.
Way back in the day, theropods (velociraptors et al.) easily outswam any big lunk in water, and dined afloat.
Awesome to see an Emu swimming. They certainly love water. Emu's are definitely great pets and very lovable, even intelligent. Just need to watch out they don't get into the shed where they will devour nuts n bolts and small tools etc the rat bags :)
Swimming with your shirt?XD
