"Friends" are not a good idea. Hedgehogs live solitary lives in the wild and get together for breeding only. My two hedgies hate each other and will bite and hiss if they're near each other. They're both girls.
@superrad1337 I have a male a and female that weren't born in the same litter. Have been together all their lives and the female actually protects the male. I didn't put them together. The old owner did and they've been fine together. I think they'd be depressed without each other to be honest. Although it's weird that neither of them are fixed and they've been together four years and never mated? My hedgies aren't mean to each other, though.
You hedgie might not have been held by its previous owner. Be patient. Handle as often as possible, even if it huffs.
It took mine 2.5 months to lighten up.
As for the pooping, try lifting it out, cuddle for 5 mins and put back in its house. It should then relieve itself over the next ten mins - the next cuddle should be less poopy cuddle.
Mine is litter trained so when I put it back after a cuddle, it relieves itself in the litter tray.
well i have never heard of a hedgehog having a buddy, like a freind that lives with him. i have a hedgehog, maybe he would like a friend. do hedgehogs like living with others???
Ya, I saw one at a petland in columbus once. Would NOT reccomend it. Not only is petland a bad place to buy pets period, the one they had there was very tempermental and agitated, pretty much what PredatorHuntress666 is saying. Breeders actually specialize in hedgies and temperment. Plus with a lot less animals around that need attention as well, breeded hedgies are probably more used to people and attention.
I worked at Petland for three years. There was nothing wrong with it. The store I was at was owned by a friendly couple, bought their animals from breeders, and had vet checks weekly.
I won't argue with I've seen four hedgehogs there, two were sweet and are my fantastic little pets, and one was a demon. It's just lack of knowledge handling exotic animals. Most people can't. They confuse hedgehogs with porcupines. =-=
No. Petstores are HORRIBLE places to get a hedgie. There they dont breed for temperment or care about health problems like WHS, which is genetic. They dont handle the babies or socialize them, either.
You should ALWAYS buy your hedgies from a repsonsible and well-known breeder.
It depends what kind of hedgehog you want because european hedgehogs are illegal in Europe but you will probably have to order an african from a breeder online
Your hedgehog's feet wont get "caked" with feces as you all put it if you teach them to be literbox trained. My hedgehog doesn't even have bedding anywhere except for his litterbox and I haven't seen him poop anywhere but there. I do give him regular baths still since it gives him a bit of exercise and cleans his entire lower body off nicely. But this "caked with feces" thing is going to make others not want to get a hedgehog. They are incredibly clean animals =\
glowingball, if a person will be turned off from getting a hedgehog by hearing that they may have to wash feces from their toes, then that person has no business getting a hedgehog. If you can litter train yours that's great, but a lot of hedgehogs do go everywhere, and prospective owners need to know this. I'm considering becoming a breeder some day. If I did, I would never sell a hedgehog to someone who wasn't prepared to clean up after it. That would be animal abuse.
I always love the comments from people who obviously have never owned a hedgehog.
"OMG U KILS DEM BY GIVENZ DEMZ A BAFFS OMG U +EVILZ"
Most hedgehogs poop EVERYWHERE. They poop while they walk, they poop while they are on their wheel, they poop when you hold them. But yes, the video poster is obviously evil for washing the feces off the hedgehogs feet regularly to avoid illness, constipation and disease as instructed by most sane hedgehog breeders.
You guys really need to read a bit before responding with such hostility. Hedgehogs are supposed to be bathed regularly in shallow water just like this video.
From the look of it, the hogs in this video are pretty young, so they're probably still getting used to taking baths. They're very nervous creatures by nature; the owner did nothing wrong.
i want to believe that you were trying to get their little feet clean, if so, dont use that much water... if you werent, then please dont do this again, hedgehogs dont like water, you should only bathe them like once or twice a year (they are clean animals) they look really scared...
I thinks it's to each their own. A lot of hedgehogs don't like it but my hedgehog isn't really phased by water. And you have to at least wash their feet more then twice a year because their feet tend to get caked with feces from running on their wheel.
Some hedgehogs don't like water, but some are very good swimmers. Some can take it or leave it. The people that say they all hate water have been misinformed/have not done research/are inexperienced.
It depends, some like it and others are nervous or scared around water.
But sometimes they need their feet washing, and my hedgie gets fluff in his spines as well as poo on his feet so he has a bath about once a month and seems to enjoy it.
well my little one loves swimming whenever he sees me go to the bathtub he rounds around on my bed and then when i say bathtime skye, he just wants to jump down and run to me but he cant so i pick him up and put him in the bath tub. Some hate it some like it it all depends on your hedgie
I will have two little hedgies in a month, and i just cant wait to bring them home. I was always a hedgie lover...and i hope mines will be as cute as these little ones :)
I thought hedgehogs were solitary animals

Wow. A hedgehogs life span, if responsibly bred and taken care of, is 6 (maybe even to 9) years. Way to prove my point.
