i totally agree God put natural things on this earth to heal us and to keep us healthy but the drug companies and doctors offices do not want you to know because that will keep money out of there pockets....just saying
I only take 1000IU daily--I no longer get sore throats, sinus infections, and when I come down with a cold, it only lasts for two, three days. When I develop a cold sore, it disappears within three, four days--it doesn't sit there for weeks on end. This little tablet seems to work for me
It is not a vitamin. It is a prohormone, regulating your genes and immune system. It is more important than the other vitamins, given that the recommended daily amount of Vit D is woefully low.
Also, do not get fooled into thinking this is a miracle supplement. Vit D is very very important, without doubt, but s are many other vitamins and minerals. Each play a significant role is many metabolic processes. If you are deficient in one because of a dietary insufficiency then supplements may help. However, if you are deficient because of other reasons (and there are numerous reasons) you will not be able to correct the deficiency by supplementation and you'll just overwork your kidneys
Important point. But the most common reason for low vitamin D is lack of UVB exposure. Elimination that cause needs to be a priority for most people. Since it is quite difficult to overdose, normalising blood levels can be undertaken even before any other causes are considered.
@wjestick Sunlight formed Vitamin D, you are correct about no overdose, but apparently you can overdose on Vitamin D in pills or capsules. I have seen that it is not wise to take more than 10,000 units per day of Vitamin D supplements for extended periods.
Moderation in all things, but moderation is 4,000IU - 10,000 IU not 400 IU. The main adverse reaction to high dose vitamin D, arises because Vitamin D increases the uptake of Calcium. Make sure you take enough Magnesium, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin A and there is no problem, they work together.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention vitamin D is a hormone and not a vitamin. Since hormones regulate just about everything in metabolism and physiology it is quite obvious that D3 is of major importance and a deficiency would be detrimental
Continued........Pharm co's treat millions of symptoms and yet many of the hundreds of conditions which cause these symtpoms can be remedied through appropriate supplements and good diet/lifestyle. Wish people see that they are having the wool pulled over their eyes by pharm co's we rely on their ignorance and apathy and the seeking "miracle pill" culture
This has been known and plenty of books written by natural medicine practitioners for decades. Suddenly when a MD reports it it's suddenly big news. This isn't the only vitamin or mineral to hold key to good health. Jdw211 - you state that Nature provides. There are a million reasons why our bodies become depleted of various vitamins and mineral over time, these are not replaced by many people as only taking on the RDA will purely top up blood levels and not replace stores.
@carldavies75 You appear to have a lot of knowledge about supplements. What do you suggest for lowering one's blood pressure by supplements? Also for reducing or eliminating lower back pain? Thanks!
@joel10000a Hi Joel, it really isn't as simple as that. I would need a copy of a full blood count, a full history from u & to work with u. Without them it wouldn't be wise to offer advice, but suffice to say, reducing sodium (table salt is worst - use natural rock salt if u really must & keep it to a minimum). Increase the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat (good levels of magnesium and potassium) and increase your water intake and exs levels. Don't look for supplements to drop your BP.
I don't want to be a conspiracy nut but it does seem odd that our own government is so behind, for instance, Canada's in it's recommendations for daily vitamin D3. I also have a real distrust of big pharmaceutical, which can't make money off of something as simple as the sun or an inexpensive supplement.
Actually, I feel angry with the sunscreen companies who make sunscreens blocking out beneficial UVB rays..causing them to fluoresce in the carcinogenic UVA spectrum. What the hell is that?!
Some good points here. Seems honest. But I see we get really into the Science of things. I believe it's because we've lost trust in nature. Do you ever see an animal, a tree, or any other living organism besides humans questioning what nature provides? Our Sun is good because it provides. No need for supplements in healthy people. Stop thinking/ worrying about your health obsessively, it's bad for your health. Don't hate 'big Pharma' for false info, they simply perceive wrongly.
@jdw211 NO, I believe you are totally wrong about Vitamin D! I know for a fact that it has helped me throw off the flu this year in one day! I have been taking 4500 units/day for about a year, and I haven't had a cold since! I am 70! When I felt the flu coming on, I immediately increased my Vit. D to 12000 units/day, for two days, and the symptoms vanished that quickly! This has never happened to me before, that I have been able to throw off the flu like that! I didn't take the flu shot either!
I agree with you, Joel. And I'm happy when I hear people have faith in something other than drugs/ doctors. But my personal focus is preventing health problems in the first place. What I meant in my comment is that you can master your own PHYSICAL health by simply consuming what nature provides in balanced proportions. If you become ill, sure there are vitamins and such which help restore balance in the body, I do not dispute that. Bottom line, I've found that thinking simply is the 'trick'.
Wed all better stock up on vitamin D supplements before theyre declared illegal! Im not kidding. In 2010 the EU is all ready to ban high strength vitamins in its member states (look it up). EU claims its for safety reasons (yeah, right). Hot on the EUs heels will be Codex Alimentarius (look that up too). Big Pharma and the powers that be dont want us to self-medicate and be healthy its bad for business.
There are two types of vitamin D one is natural (D3, or cholecalciferol) and one is synthetic (D2, or ergocalciferol). D3 is the same vitamin your body makes when exposed to sunshine. D2 is made by irradiating yeast with ultraviolet light. Supplementation with D3 is a lot safer and more efficient as D2 is poorly absorbed by the body. So when taking a Vit.D supplement, make sure its D3, not D2.
I've been taking 10,000 IU's in supplement form (2 5,000 IU softgels) every day for the past 3 years and I have not gotten sick once. Not a single cold, flu, etc. I used to fight colds all winter long. I get my levels tested once a year and they're usually around 60 ng/mL, right in the optimal range - The Vitamin D Council recommends maintaining a level between 50-80 ng/mL. It is absolutely preposterous what the RDA/DRV is (for all nutrients) as set by the FDA, the Fraud & Drug Administration.
Unfortunately, most people don't realize that the gov't recommendations are not designed for optimal health; these levels are only the amount that usually prevents obvious disease--there can be a huge difference between RDA & optimal levels. I'm wondering if the statin drugs for lowering cholesterol (another myth--OXIDIZED LDLs are actually the problem) has caused any depression in vitamin D productiiom since sunlight causes the cholesterol in the skin to begin the vitamin D production process.
could i get your help on something...i have had a blood test and have the results from Labcorp...where do you look for the name or discription of the amount of D.. in your blood...what is the name of the Test..is it the A/G Ratio or AST,OR..ALT??what would the name be that i would look for on my test thank you ahead of time
LabCorp is also where I get my testing done. The test itself is called the "25-Hydroxy Vitamin D" test. It measures the amount of active Vitamin D in the blood. At least in my case, I have to specifically add this test to my blood work; Vitamin D levels aren't usually measured unless you or your doctor specifically requested that they be.
Vitamin D is no doubt the most important "hormone"/vitamin in addition to a healthy diet in warding off most illnesses. Interesting point he made about Vitamin D versus FLUORIDE (toxic waste). I wish more people were aware of the benefits of Vitamin D. For years my doctor warned me to stay out of the sun and use sunscreen. I fell for it and was sick with flu every year. I know better now... do not use sunscreen and get some sunshine. It's healthy in moderation. Haven't been sick since.
Yes, fluoride actually disrupts the enzyme system and the mechanism involved in keeping gums attached to the teeth. Ingested, it disrupts iodine levels and thyroid function (along with the chlorine in the water). In addition, the glycerin in toothpaste makes a barrier preventing the ingredients in the saliva from repairing tooth enamel.
Where did you get that info.? I'm a Dental Hygienist and a nutrition nut, and I have never read anything to suggest the claims that you made. I would really be interested...not being ugly about it. I, specifically, worked for a Periodontist, which specializes in the structures surrounding the teeth, i.e. gums and bone. Thanks.
get a blood test done. Check for blood levels above 30 ng/ml. Its very difficult to get the toxicity from vitamin D. You have to take mega mega doses. Try for 4000-6000 iu based on the results of your blood test and doctors recommendations. Or course, some doctors don't know a thing about it...
Vert helpful. Thanks. I was taking fish oil and trying to eat right and get daily sunshine, but my blood still showed low Vit. D. Now I take supplements.
I now take about 4500 units of Vit. D per day. You can get 2000 unit tablets at Wal-Mart very reasonably. If you are out in the sunshine for more than 30 minutes, in a bathing suit, you probably don't need to take Vit. D supplements that day.
