dumb.. why send a small robot when u can send a much more capable explorer by assembling it in earth orbit. the idea that u need to send the explorer directly from the surface of earth is backward thinking. trying to build bigger and bigger lifting vehicles is stupid.

Sure beats the bouncing airbag concept, Canadian scientists were gagged and silenced when they discovered snow falling from clouds on Mars via LIDAR weather instrument. Way to go Canada!

The air on Mars is very thin. For MSL thy had to choose this "Skycrane" descent method because of its weight. The balloons were used on Pathfinder (1997)and both Mars Exploration Rovers (2003)as those vehicles wieghted less...

Risky landing procedure, perhaps they rather should use shock absorbing balloons like the other and trust more on parachutes than this advanced retro-rocket assisting rocket thingie.. My bet that MSL crashes when the retros fail 5-10 seconds before landing.

Yes there is air on Mars. The Atmosphere is one % that of Earth. There is no oxygen but lots CO2. If Mars had no air Parachutes would not work. You can see clouds in the atmosphere of mars from some MER pictures and Pathfinder.

NASA need to mass produce this robots and their delivery systems to cut cost and increase the number of sites that can be explore, many could be only loaded with image and atmospheric sensors...The skycrane is kind of scary I hope is better than the airbags...
