How do you get the camera to autofocus during video? I just got it last night to try it out and it wouldn't autofocus. Was it just because it's nighttime and it's dark or is there an option in the menu?
Yes, sometimes in the dark the camera has a hard time to autofocus. You might want to try out different modes or if nothing helps use manual focusing which as a bonus won't let you have the annoying sounds of the autofocus.
Good evening friend, 3 days ago I bought the Nikon D5100 experience in photography and guiding me through the features it has, however no video for set recorded at night and directly connect the HDMI cable tv and looks very land with many dark objects, and little points not totally nitido the video does not look good ... I would like to help me if it is configuration problem
I have the same camera (D5100) and lens (18-105mm). Switching to live view or movie recording my lens does the same sound and has difficulty autofocusing. This happens at 70-105 mm focal range. When i press half way the shutter relese button the lense quickly focuses.
Can you plese tell me, is there a problem with the lens AF system, or is it normal?
I guess it's normal, the lens just didn't know where to focus. I guess because it is in autofocus mode it always tries to find something as far away as the thing it was focused on before. I haven'T made any other experiences with permament autofocus. After making this video I only used manual focus or single autofocus.
If the scene you want to film allows it I would suggest using the "follow target" function.
@Kadoffel Don't say that! Everyone is creative and have there skill inside them. And; When i said Bad Bokeh... I was referring about the lens, srsly... i just bought one, and i concluded it to be designed for sharpness, and not bokeh! it has sharp disturbing background instead of smooth gradient effect with some circle spots... BUT, If you wan't some good bokeh, get yourself some sigma 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 :) Nikkor lenses aren't that good compared to Sigma. Nikkor has aspheric elements.
I'm not saying that I don't have any skills or talents at all, I was jsut trying to say that I could rave gotten better results with that setup. And I'm quite satisfied with the bokeh, at least in the few shots in which it matters to me.
But yes, I was planning on getting a 50mm, too. =)
Although 3TI does have full video manual control... the D5100 autofocus is not that bad! Plus you get a MTF BETTER photography quality with this one... so go get the nikon!
Just for my pleasure, because I love great photography. I have a simple compact but I was moved to a more pro. So my girlfriend decided to offer me:) I'm lucky to have a girlfriend like that ^ ^
later I would still like to take pictures more "pro", just went for birthday may be for weddings, ... can be one day. But what I like above all is nature! everything in nature
Nice shooting.
I get one too and this is an amazing DSLR. I've not try to shoot yet.

Bad bokeh :(

@Xzefreeman
Maybe but that's rather due to my nonexisting skill at the time than the quality of the camera or lens.

Nice job, but what you need is a good microphone that can mostly block out autofocus noise :P

@ostrichmedia
I guess that would help, at least to some degree! ;)

is the background automatically blurry? or did you set it that way? because I really like the blurry background

That's due to the high focal length and open aperture I used.

Maybe you should take a look at this: pixel-peeper"dot"com.
They have a lot of example photos/reviews there, could be quite helpful.
