One of the best examples of Buddy's guitar playing;nothing flash-just that great sound;which he could-and did-reproduce live;the write up in the paper the next after I saw him at Birmingham Town Hall was,"great sound-just like the record-but he was very loud!!" I wonder what he would think of todays stadium gigs?!!
The Picks were the backup vocalist on this song. It is included on the 2011 53rd Grammy Awards nomination for "Buddy Holly Not Fade Away: The Complete Studio Recordings and More." All 9 of The Picks songs are on the nominated LP. Buddy told The Picks he liked what they did.
Yeah, those guitar strings are right in your FACE at the beginning. I had a famous guitar teacher once who I played this for once and he was amazed that Buddy Holly played both rhythm and lead...we both sat there and figured out the solo...advanced stuff for 1957. Holly was inventing. But those Picks backing vocals had him laughing, as it always has me...even Holly hated them. He called them the "Nose Picks". They were Norman Petty's idea. The Roses were far more suited to Holly's style.
Yet another of the greatest of all time's more obscure masterpieces from late 50's....oft imitated but simply NEVER equalled for 'punch', drive, perfection of pitch & timing and the sheer astounding vocal ENERGY which only the Beatles captured a few years later from Buddy's inspiration......& all done without drugs, uppers, downers, pills, tablets, EXCESSIVE alcohol & EVEN only minimal tobacco!!!
Buddy's stuff sounds as fresh & vibrant today as it EVER did......the sure test of GREATNESS. Amen.
unequaled. timeless. untouchable

Buddy at his best. VERY ahead of his time.

How great is the guitar solo in this song? I'd say only a few of Jimmy Page's solo's can come close to it. So far ahead of his time.

This is the most underrated of Buddy's song, and my personal favorite.
"Make me bubble brightly."
