Being a smaller community they had to inter marry, ergo caste can't bekept alive. Kali reminds me of the terrifying looking Tibetan deities (or boddhisatvas, even) that you see in Tibetan paintings (tankas, I'm thinking), who are actually regarded as benevolent - they protect against evil - they are destructive, but what they destroy is the evil and threatening aspects of reality. Hence they protect.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that why Kali's depicted as being scary? Because she has a destructive power that's used for good?

You are right, but is her appearance really terrifying? Look at her again. The evil she destroys are depicted usually as demons, they represent the negative in us. Fear(especially of death), anger, and ego. She is evoked to cancel out thees forces in us that keep us from spiritual attainment as wall as other things.
