I believe she is saying "Blackguard", which is an insult I've not heard in a while! It is defined as "a thoroughly-unprincipled person", "one of the lowest servants of a large-house, who would clean the sooty pots & pans" and also "a common, crude, lecherous, cheating scoundrel, given to swearing", and is usually pronounced "BLahh-guDD" - I've never heard it as "blACK-GUARd".
will everyone just shut up about it not being the Pogues, no shit it's not the Pogues! It's not as if they've broke the law by covering it. Jesus Christ! I think this is a great cover.
I used to like K.T. Tunstall - that is, until I heard this. This song has soul and raw emotion and feeling - to cover it with politically correct lyric tampering is an absolute crime of the highest order. It's like taking a shit on the Mona Lisa.
@GeetarStrummer Can you say Mountain = molehill? You couldn't like KT that much if you really lost all admiration for her just because of that one change. Saying that it is equivalent to taking a shit on the Mona Lisa is either farcical or you really just don't have any aesthetic appreciation.
It's not the Pogues? You mean it's not Shane Macgowan? The vocals on this are excellant.. This is a great song very well covered here. Ed Harcourt is a tallened artist in his own right, very under estermated in my opinion. Check out his latest album "Lustre"
alot of people have been covering this song. there's this, coldplay(haven't heard it yet) and a awful cover by "he who ruined this song and shall not be named" *shudder*
@importantverbs maybe she wasn't worried about being PC, maybe she just didn't want to sing 'that' word. I wouldn't, and I'd probably sound awkward doing it. I guess I might choose just not to sing the song in that case but on the other hand, if I liked it enough then that probably wouldn't stop me. I guess she just wanted to cover it and this was the best way for her. I don't think its fair to say that people who feel wrong singing certain lyrics are necessarily 'worried about being PC'.
This is pathetic. None of the singing matches up to the lyrics in the way it was intended. The male singer is singing it like it's a straightforward love song instead of as a violently drunk love song, and Tunstall has none of Kirsty MacColl's personality.
Anyone who thinks this is better than the original is talking out of their ass.
This is the first time I've heard this version. The guy might as well be throwing kisses and flowers and making the "peace" sign while singing. "faggot" sounds better. They were fighting drunk lovers, not politically correct politicians, for the love of god, give the song due justice.
Too similar to the original for my liking... I prefer Christy Moore's version. That piano intro doesn't sound right without Shane's voice after it. :)

@GeetarStrummer
I still like KT, her cover of "I Want You Back" is beyond spot on, but this just doesn't rate.
This classic is one of the hardest songs in our recorded legacy to perform well, and this is sadly lacking.

i like the music once it reaches 1:25
also, it's not 18 to one, it's ten to one

@redyoshi1000 It's 18 to 1 not 10 to 1 I used to make the same mistake, but this rendition has that lyric correct.

I think KT Tunstall is pretty cool rocker and has great voice but this is just sad. If she wasn't worried about being PC she could be so much better.

There is none of the soul and heart that the orginal had.

@ihateFFX No, if you knew his stuff you'd see that he's made it pretty much his own. He's just not hiding the fact that he can actually sing.

Yeah, he's got the drunken looseness that Shane does, but he doesn't have the rasp that makes Shane so great.
