I am from a small town. I am 28 years old now. I discovered punk rock thru the internet "Answer That" was the first album I bought because I had heard of them thru the Nitro Label. I went to warped tour and bought art of drowning there. Ever since then I have loved all their albums
And, this doesn't mean anything, and yes two part comments are a nuisance. But I listen to just about every type of music EXCEPT the type of music that "they might be giants" play, whatever type of music that may be. Music will resonate with different people depending on who they are. Some days when I'm emotionally balanced I find the anger/ melancholy of their old style to be almost silly. It's these days that I can listen to "beautiful thieves" and think "oh I'm glad there's no screaming here"
I discovered AFI from their "Sing the Sorrow" CD. Since then, I have absolutely been in love with them. Currently, I am listening to Black Sails and AFI to hear what they once sounded like. I still love it. I don't think they sold out with their later CDs. I think they just really like to experiment with different styles. And even if you don't like that direction, you still gotta admit that they are good. :]

I think they peaked with this album. I got into AFI kinda late, around All Hallows EP, I gotta say I definitely prefer the older shit even up to Art of Drowning, there's some killer gang vox on it! Even Sing the Sorrow is good once in a while, but fuck they've gone off the rails lately X_x
What I really don't understand is, that there are a thousand even a million people trying to say WHAT music exactly ist. Is it pop? Is it rock? I for myself don't care, there are good songs out there and songs that are just crap. I'd like to be AFI backwards, when it comes to my music career. Meaning, I'd like to put out two pop rock CDs to get the world's attention, then go just plain punk, and keep getting punk-er and punk-er until the entire world is yet again in love with punk.
Well I'm not sure how the conversation went but maybe it was something like
"people who enjoy pop-punk could not possibly appreciate the goth-punk they used to play"
Well, I mean, I like DU. It's a great album (to me). Yes, pop is more accessible, but why is it so stigmatized? It's bouncier and more melodic, but that's the direction they've been going for years. They use the same song structure each song and their catchy hooks are a serious draw. DU, then CL, were bound to happen.
Just a thought here: AFI's music has evolved, yes, but here's another perspective. Punk>Hardcore>Alternative>Rock/Pop. Could also be seen as a path or progression of human emotion, are there not humans writing the music? I believe that it's only natural for the music one makes to evolve, as long as the people making it are as well. Of course, that said, the process I'm describing is one where there are no outside influences, uninterrupted.

1-Ive know the band in 06 w/the song&vid of MissMurder. I bought STS 1st and really loved it, and they became 1 of my fav bands, I love them so fuc**ng much!! The AFI that I love the +, love really really more than the other and makes me live big emotions is the new 1. But even if it's another thing, that I don't like as much and doesn't make me feel the big emotions like the new 1, I also love the old 1 & bought the albums. Well, I still miss 2 albums but I'll buy them when I'll see them:)<3

badass songs! It depends on what your musical tastes are. I for one, like both old and new AFI. The music they made from both eras is awesome and I think that somehow they all share some characteristics in some form. So stop nagging about it! Some people only like the new, some like only the old, and some like both. If anybody likes AFI at all, that's a good thing. Man, you have to love some good Cereal Wars and Malleus Maleficarum, and The Leaving Song Part 2 and Now The World also rule.

anyone ever notice that Answer That And Stay Fashionable and Very Proud Of Ya are punk, Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes and Black Sails In The Sunset is hardcore, The Art Of Drowning and Sing The Sorrow are mainly alternative, Decemberunderground and Crash Love are rock popish AFI changes their sound every few years im pretty sure their next album will be a different genre also =^-^=

Well, I mean, I like DU. It's a great album (to me). Yes, pop is more accessible, but why is it so stigmatized? It's bouncier and more melodic, but that's the direction they've been going for years. They use the same song structure each song and their catchy hooks are a serious draw. DU, then CL, were bound to happen.

Just a thought here: AFI's music has evolved, yes, but here's another perspective. Punk>Hardcore>Alternative>Rock/Pop. Could also be seen as a path or progression of human emotion, are there not humans writing the music? I believe that it's only natural for the music one makes to evolve, as long as the people making it are as well. Of course, that said, the process I'm describing is one where there are no outside influences, uninterrupted.

In an interview in 2007 or 2008, Davey Havok HIMSELF stated that the band used to be punk in the early days by saying "we were punk."
Why try to deny that they were punk when he said it himself? I mean, like you said, genres are meant for people that have nothing to do. I guess this means HE has nothing to do right?

1-Ive know the band in 06 w/the song&vid of MissMurder. I bought STS 1st and really loved it, and they became 1 of my fav bands, I love them so fuc**ng much!! The AFI that I love the +, love really really more than the other and makes me live big emotions is the new 1. But even if it's another thing, that I don't like as much and doesn't make me feel the big emotions like the new 1, I also love the old 1 & bought the albums. Well, I still miss 2 albums but I'll buy them when I'll see them:)<3

badass songs! It depends on what your musical tastes are. I for one, like both old and new AFI. The music they made from both eras is awesome and I think that somehow they all share some characteristics in some form. So stop nagging about it! Some people only like the new, some like only the old, and some like both. If anybody likes AFI at all, that's a good thing. Man, you have to love some good Cereal Wars and Malleus Maleficarum, and The Leaving Song Part 2 and Now The World also rule.

Damn people, I haven't seen it so much on this video, but on almost every single AFI video I see on here people are nagging about old and new AFI and which is better and what the best album is and whatnot. I'm here to set it straight. AFI is my favorite band of all time. I don't listen to anything but AFI, save a couple of bands. AFI is a band whose music is always good. anyone ever notice that Answer That And Stay Fashionable and Very Proud Of Ya are punk, Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes and Black Sails In The Sunset is hardcore, The Art Of Drowning and Sing The Sorrow are mainly alternative, Decemberunderground and Crash Love are rock popish AFI changes their sound every few years im pretty sure their next album will be a different genre also =^-^=
