I remember watching both versions when I was in high school in the 80's ...and I appreciate them for different reasons. I can't really compare the two...just appreciate them both.
Umm.....I always liked WWF (now WWE) as opposed to WCW and I definitely liked Vehicle Voltron compared to Lion Voltron because the story was so much better and actually required thought and intelligence as opposed to the first grade saturday morning cartoon feel of the Lion force. there are two problems with vehicle voltron. number one, it was forced upon fans when lion voltron was at the height of its popularity. number two, if you missed the begining, or if you missed too many episodes, you wouldn't know what was going on in the plot. when i was a kid, some cartoons i would miss because they came on when i had to leave for school, or before i could make it home. then every season, they would change the scheldule. i never got to see robotech no matter how fast i ran home

Voltron 1 of the Near Universe (the 15 Vehicle Voltron), Voltron 2 of the Middle Universe(the 3 Gladiator Voltron that never aired in America), and the Voltron 3 of the Far Universe(the famous 5 Lion Voltron). if they were actually all aired in order, the lions are the last one. and it is rumored that all 3 Voltrons can form into 1 super Voltron.
I love voltron if it's Lion or vehicle but the first one that I ever seen was lion Voltron.Instant love when I first started to watch it.I have to say lion voltron though for the simple fact that the transformation was simple and quick the lions alone are fighting machines.But to be honest both Voltrons are defenders so that's cool with me.

i still have my Voltron II Deluxe Gladiator or at least that’s what matchbox called it. it's a bit scuffed up and dusty but still works. it wasn't really a very good toy, made a better shelf decoration. when combined it's legs couldn't move at all and the 6 arms were all too close to the arms above or below so they had crap articulation, all so the arms were mounted on a swivel that locked into position if swung forward, just an awkward fragile toy. Separated the robots were great.
As a kid I enjoyed the stories of the Lion Voltron more than the vehicle Voltron... I always felt the vehicle Voltron was like the cheap version of the Lions... I stand by that in my old age lmao ;0

People don't tune into giant robots and monsters to watch a bunch of fucking cars. Voltron got popular because it hit on the same thing as pre-turbo power rangers, robot versions of non-mechanical things. That was the audience it attracted, the kids who were bored if the dinobots didn't show up.
Seriously, how can you even tell the non-dinobots apart? They're all the same damn thing.

Lion Force Voltron/ Golion is superior to Vehicle Force Voltron/ Dairugger XV. Lion Voltron has a mystical element to it that Vehicle Voltron did not. For that reason, it made you believe that Lion Voltron was more than just a robot. After all, he fought Haggar/ Honerva and her creations which were supposed to be from Hell and won. Vehicle Voltron just beat enemy after enemy but it seemed that at any time the Drules could create something to defeat Vehicle Voltron.
This is my opinion on why Lion Voltron is the best.
It looked more bad ass because it was made from metal lions. The lions heads for the feet and hands actually roared and could be used as weapons. (At least on my brother's metal lions voltron could) And, the blazing sword added to Voltrons bad ass image.
I'm female and the fact that Allura wasn't a perfect princess, and she was part of the Voltron force made me like the show. As well as the relationship between Keith and Allura.
According to dialogue from the tv series vehicle Voltron could only operate for 5 minutes. Lion Voltron had no such limitations, so all the Lion Voltron Force would have to do is survive for 5 minutes and then they could slash Vehicle Voltron to shreds. 'Nuff said :)
@MWELLS1973 Yeah, that 5 minute time limit of Vehicle Force Voltron ruined it for me. He did have cool weapons and fight scenes were entertaining. I"ll give him that. Problem is he seemed just like another robot warrior. Definitely not one that should carry the title Voltron Defender of the Universe.
Lion Voltron for me. Maybe storylines and character development would sway me now as an adult, but as a kid........those 5 robot lions were just badass. And even now, LV just looks cool. VV just looks like another overgrown Japanese robot.
I am one of the biggest voltron fans out there and I at first thought VV was just a substitute for LV and I was like "oh no" lol. But in time I learned to appreciate it and even managed to score a VV christmas that year and was very pleased. But that was just because LV was sold out everywhere. LV will always be voltron to me. Maybe thats because I am an american and not japanese. I dunno.
Vehicle Voltron makes more sense. Especially if there is a Live movie version made. Flying space ships in space makes more sense than Flying Metal Lions. Romance in sci fi stories normally makes it lame.
I always thought that Vehicle Voltron was a future Voltron- after Lion Voltron was retired or something. Hey, what do you expect from a 9-yr-old? I also had both sets as toys and building the Vehicle one just felt like it was cooler, especially when adults were like, "How do you know what goes where?", versus the Lion Voltron where you only had 5 pieces- yes, I did fly the plane over last on Vehicle Voltron. Both are good. But I agree that LV was easier to understand, but I'll also agree that VV was AGGRESSIVE in every sense of the word, AND to top that off, VV also converted into three separate combinations as well as form Voltron. VV was my favorite, but LV (despite the tape mix-up mentioned) put the WHOLE franchise on the map to this very day.
As a kid it was lions all the way, but vehicle looks better as Voltron. Lions are tight when separated. Started watching vehicle voltron when the stupid princess took over the best looking lion.
Then if that's not enough, add Devastator, Superion, Predaking, Brutikus, Menasor, Computron and Omega Supreme. Let's see who the REAL king robot is. (My money's on Omega Supreme! LOL)

All the anime bots are good.

you did sort of get your wish in the Devils Due comics: the lions were stolen by the Galaxy Alliance and reverse-engineered to create the vehicle force, and the 2 Voltrons initially fought each other as enemies, but then joined forces when they agreed they had a more common enemy.

I always liked Lion Voltron better. LadyRhianataol is correct about Vehicle Voltron being more adult themed with the politics. However remember that the target audience for the series was children and kids want action not the politics behind said action. Now that I am older I do appreciate Vehicle Voltron a bit more however now it is a sense of nostalgia that will forever IMO make Lion Voltron better.
Well both voltrons have their goods and bads in the cartoons, but as far as the toy figures go lion voltron all the way, it is just a wonderful piece, vehicle voltron is not that bad of a figure but no diecast at all just makes it feel cheap and crappy to me.

Vehicle voltron sucks. There's like a 150 pieces to it form toes and ankles form knee caps and shoulder blades. Its dumb by the time you from the robot the cartoon is over. Not to mention that after the robot is formed it does a stupid punch punch kick wtf is that. RETARDED. What happens if one of those stupid cars break down or they forget to give it an oil change? Lets say one of the drivers is at the bar during an attack? Lion Voltron is much simpler and much cooler looking. No Contest.
Vehicle voltron story is much better than the lion. At first I didn't like the look of the vehicle voltron, but afterward I was mesmerized with the vehicle voltron. The lion story is sooo sooo boring after awhile. Some good episode of the lion is when Sven reapperared. Between the two voltrons, the lion looks mightier...!

boring isn't the same thing as simple, a simple transformation more likely gives a cleaner robot mode, if say i was given a choice between g1 optimus prime or movie prime, the g1 prime would win hands down for iconic transformation
Lion Voltron was a beast!!! Lion Voltron had a better design and in my opinion more powerful. When I think Voltron it's automatically the lion version. Vehicle Voltron was cool too, but Lion Voltron was the truth!!!
The Lions formed the better and superior Voltron BY FAR. Whenever I think of Voltron, I think of the lion version and don't even think of the car versioned one.

the starwars/star trek analogy was probably correct. Of course there were more Lion eps than there were Vehicle, which naturally implied more watching.
I loved Lion V a lot but now I appreciate Dairuggers design a lot more in more then one way.just to name 2, wow there are colored people other then White or Japanese! Not that, that makes a show but for kids like me who are not Anglo or Jap, it certainly makes a diff. Number two, is the way you had more vehicles and they were not limited to two modes , but 3 gatai modes, land air and sea! I bet this was more popular with kids at school where you could play with up to 15 people as opes to 5.
Also it just makes more sense that if there was a Space Adventure series you would have aliens in it that weren't always just your fearsome nemesis. Pretty much just Zarkon and is croonies were the only identifiable aliens in the Lion Voltron series, while in Vehicle Voltron, there were aliens were members of the team (a girl and a bunch of guys whom were all clearly not terrestrial in anyway).
Yeah it really had that diverse feeling, and let you know that any one can be bad or good regardless of species. Dont get me wrong, I still LOVE lion V, but If I really had to choose one, it would be incredibly hard to choose. I do lean a lil tiny tiny bit to vehicle voltron.
It would be great if you could somehow mix them together. Best way is if Vehicle Voltron was actually a three-way series, meaning that the series went off on different arcs corresponding to each group and at various times those arcs would clash and you would see the guys working together.
And in a way you would have three separate voltrons, which could form together to make a bigger Volton, like in the Albegas Votron animation.
Then you could have each group have its own story.
I now feel guilty for liking VVoltron over Lion Voltron. I need to sort things out. I guess the guilt is the starting point. This vid made some good points.

Truth be known I DO like the Lion Voltron series better. I was like 5 and it was easier to follow and understand. But Vehicle Voltron was also cool and had a little better animation I have to say There's room in my heart for both of them.
in my market VV was shown first. I remember the first time i seen voltron toys in the store and it was LV. i was totally confused. but i remember thinking that lion robots were really really cool!
So to this day LV got way more air time, and imo it's because lion robots are really really cool.
LV was for the younger kids with those annoying ass mice and romantic scenes. VV was way more serious and kicked more butt. However, the lions were cooler and got more airplay. I loved both but i wish the vehicles got more time. I think the VV had better weapons but the lion's had a better looking sword!!

I always like voltron. Everything has thier pros and cons. Lions or cars are the choices. I didn't really watch many of the car ones I grew up watching the lions. The car were neat but it seem to make the show longer because you had more parts to put together then you would the lions. I say the lions will be more my vote easy story line, only a few characters to keep up with, and the captain like show down between good and evil was the way to go.
I loved Lion Voltron because I never even heard of Vehicle Voltron until I decided to look up Voltron on Wikipedia and learned it existed. The vehicles look kinda dumb. How intimidating is a car? Remember when Power Rangers got the car zords in Power Rangers Turbo? Everyone was pissed. No one cared. Same thing with me concerning Vehicle Voltron. Cars and trucks are boring. Bring on the animals.

Good video up till the middle when all the board posts got read. Then it got too long and I had to skip forward. I'd rather hear about the history of the show instead of opinions of fans.
The Vehicle Voltron offered a bit more realism and logic in a fantasy show with the vechiles and flight crafts. The awesome lions offered more of a fantasy element. Not too logical, but just plain cool. I liked them both, but wish Vehicle Voltron still got a little more TV air than it did.
I think a new Voltron anime without all of the corny "Form Blazing Sword" and "Planet Doom" dialog would be great. Villains should have a goal beyond "evil", what real villain thinks he's evil anyway? They believe there on the right side too.
Bottom Line: Lion Voltron all the way, however a new version with the death of Sven and without a definitive conclusion to each episode would be great. Short dramatic anime series that follows a defined story line.
Realistically and tactically, the Vehicle voltron had a serious disadvantage. Since there was many vehicles required to form the giant robot then creates a higher probability of losing one of the parts or members on combat and hence no voltron to save the day :(
To me I love both Voltron I haven't seen the Second one but I'm sure I'll love it too but I have to say Lion Voltron is my Favorite I grew up with Lion Voltron I mean when power rangers came out my friends was Megazord and I was Voltron.

According to dialogue from the tv series vehicle Voltron could only operate for 5 minutes. Lion Voltron had no such limitations, so all the Lion Voltron Force would have to do is survive for 5 minutes and then they could slash Vehicle Voltron to shreds. 'Nuff said :)

Problem is he seemed just like another robot warrior. Definitely not one that should carry the title Voltron Defender of the Universe.

Lion Voltron for me. Maybe storylines and character development would sway me now as an adult, but as a kid........those 5 robot lions were just badass. And even now, LV just looks cool. VV just looks like another overgrown Japanese robot.

I am one of the biggest voltron fans out there and I at first thought VV was just a substitute for LV and I was like "oh no" lol. But in time I learned to appreciate it and even managed to score a VV christmas that year and was very pleased. But that was just because LV was sold out everywhere. LV will always be voltron to me. Maybe thats because I am an american and not japanese. I dunno.

Loved both, but Vehicle had more depth, the battles were more varied, not just "oh now what are we gonna do?" ::blazing sword:: ::kill::.
Also what no one seems to mention, the commander of the explorer had the voice of Optimus Prime!! That alone makes Vehicle Voltron the WINNER!

Vehicle Voltron makes more sense. Especially if there is a Live movie version made. Flying space ships in space makes more sense than Flying Metal Lions. Romance in sci fi stories normally makes it lame.

I always thought that Vehicle Voltron was a future Voltron- after Lion Voltron was retired or something. Hey, what do you expect from a 9-yr-old? I also had both sets as toys and building the Vehicle one just felt like it was cooler, especially when adults were like, "How do you know what goes where?", versus the Lion Voltron where you only had 5 pieces- yes, I did fly the plane over last on Vehicle Voltron. I hate to take a middle stand, but I love each equally- sorry, but they each are special

Both are good. But I agree that LV was easier to understand, but I'll also agree that VV was AGGRESSIVE in every sense of the word, AND to top that off, VV also converted into three separate combinations as well as form Voltron. VV was my favorite, but LV (despite the tape mix-up mentioned) put the WHOLE franchise on the map to this very day.
That's my take on it.

I wasn't meaning for it to be a duel to the death. I mean, let's face it... Aside from the Decepticon merged superbots and possibly Trypticon, there's noone for them to fight. All the anime bots are good.

you did sort of get your wish in the Devils Due comics: the lions were stolen by the Galaxy Alliance and reverse-engineered to create the vehicle force, and the 2 Voltrons initially fought each other as enemies, but then joined forces when they agreed they had a more common enemy.

I always liked Lion Voltron better. LadyRhianataol is correct about Vehicle Voltron being more adult themed with the politics. However remember that the target audience for the series was children and kids want action not the politics behind said action. Now that I am older I do appreciate Vehicle Voltron a bit more however now it is a sense of nostalgia that will forever IMO make Lion Voltron better.

Well both voltrons have their goods and bads in the cartoons, but as far as the toy figures go lion voltron all the way, it is just a wonderful piece, vehicle voltron is not that bad of a figure but no diecast at all just makes it feel cheap and crappy to me.

I'll say this..Lion Voltron had better character devleopment...I mean even Princess took over blue lion and all..nice...but Vehicle Voltron from a technology standpoint was better. It had the flexibility to be 15 individual ships, or 3 super-vehicles specializing in land, sea, and air, and of course could still form Voltron itselef. So from an adaptability standpoint, Vehicle Voltron had more options but Lion Voltron always seemed to have more sheer force and I'll admit is cooler looking.

Vehicle voltron sucks. There's like a 150 pieces to it form toes and ankles form knee caps and shoulder blades. Its dumb by the time you from the robot the cartoon is over. Not to mention that after the robot is formed it does a stupid punch punch kick wtf is that. RETARDED. What happens if one of those stupid cars break down or they forget to give it an oil change? Lets say one of the drivers is at the bar during an attack? Lion Voltron is much simpler and much cooler looking. No Contest.

Vehicle voltron story is much better than the lion. At first I didn't like the look of the vehicle voltron, but afterward I was mesmerized with the vehicle voltron. The lion story is sooo sooo boring after awhile. Some good episode of the lion is when Sven reapperared. Between the two voltrons, the lion looks mightier...!

I loved Lion V a lot but now I appreciate Dairuggers design a lot more in more then one way.just to name 2, wow there are colored people other then White or Japanese! Not that, that makes a show but for kids like me who are not Anglo or Jap, it certainly makes a diff. Number two, is the way you had more vehicles and they were not limited to two modes , but 3 gatai modes, land air and sea! I bet this was more popular with kids at school where you could play with up to 15 people as opes to 5.

Also it just makes more sense that if there was a Space Adventure series you would have aliens in it that weren't always just your fearsome nemesis. Pretty much just Zarkon and is croonies were the only identifiable aliens in the Lion Voltron series, while in Vehicle Voltron, there were aliens were members of the team (a girl and a bunch of guys whom were all clearly not terrestrial in anyway).

It would be great if you could somehow mix them together. Best way is if Vehicle Voltron was actually a three-way series, meaning that the series went off on different arcs corresponding to each group and at various times those arcs would clash and you would see the guys working together.
And in a way you would have three separate voltrons, which could form together to make a bigger Volton, like in the Albegas Votron animation.
Then you could have each group have its own story.

in my market VV was shown first. I remember the first time i seen voltron toys in the store and it was LV. i was totally confused. but i remember thinking that lion robots were really really cool!
So to this day LV got way more air time, and imo it's because lion robots are really really cool.

LV was for the younger kids with those annoying ass mice and romantic scenes. VV was way more serious and kicked more butt. However, the lions were cooler and got more airplay. I loved both but i wish the vehicles got more time. I think the VV had better weapons but the lion's had a better looking sword!!

I always like voltron. Everything has thier pros and cons. Lions or cars are the choices. I didn't really watch many of the car ones I grew up watching the lions. The car were neat but it seem to make the show longer because you had more parts to put together then you would the lions. I say the lions will be more my vote easy story line, only a few characters to keep up with, and the captain like show down between good and evil was the way to go.

Once the season started showing the sub teams form their own battle units it was over.
Air team...form strato fighter!
Sea team...ignite nuclear power thrusters and form aqua fighter!

I loved Lion Voltron because I never even heard of Vehicle Voltron until I decided to look up Voltron on Wikipedia and learned it existed. The vehicles look kinda dumb. How intimidating is a car? Remember when Power Rangers got the car zords in Power Rangers Turbo? Everyone was pissed. No one cared. Same thing with me concerning Vehicle Voltron. Cars and trucks are boring. Bring on the animals.

Good video up till the middle when all the board posts got read. Then it got too long and I had to skip forward. I'd rather hear about the history of the show instead of opinions of fans.
The Vehicle Voltron offered a bit more realism and logic in a fantasy show with the vechiles and flight crafts. The awesome lions offered more of a fantasy element. Not too logical, but just plain cool. I liked them both, but wish Vehicle Voltron still got a little more TV air than it did.

There is only ONE Voltron PERIOD.
I think a new Voltron anime without all of the corny "Form Blazing Sword" and "Planet Doom" dialog would be great. Villains should have a goal beyond "evil", what real villain thinks he's evil anyway? They believe there on the right side too.
Bottom Line: Lion Voltron all the way, however a new version with the death of Sven and without a definitive conclusion to each episode would be great. Short dramatic anime series that follows a defined story line.

Realistically and tactically, the Vehicle voltron had a serious disadvantage. Since there was many vehicles required to form the giant robot then creates a higher probability of losing one of the parts or members on combat and hence no voltron to save the day :(
