I remember back in late 1995 when I was 10 we had these historic Navy Radio Communication Towers in San Diego that the Navy was getting ready to demolish and they tried dismantling the radio towers with a Skycrane Helicopter, they got one piece down but the tower portions were too heavy for the skycrane so they did away with that idea and demolished them with explosives. Those skycrane helicopters are sure amazing to watch in action.
They're definitely cool to watch - especially when they're flying directly overhead carrying several tons of huge steel tower. :-O That explosive demolition would have been cool to see, too! Thanks for watching and commenting :-)
I seem to remember seeing some construction documentary about those large commercial wind turbines, and they were using ground-based cranes to install nacelles and blades. I don't know if the weight of those parts exceeds the sky crane's 10-ton max or not. Chances are good that smaller turbines in rough terrain are partially assembled with air suport, but I haven't seen any actual footage. If you find anything on it, do post! :-)
Nice Video. I really liked your video. Youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed I use a site called Tubeviews . Net It has really done wonders for me.
As much as I didn't like the towers going in at one of my favorite natural recreational spots, being the engineering type myself I was most impressed by the whole project. I've video and time-lapse documented most of the process of the tower building from the foundation-up (so far). Tons more footage and condensed/time lapse documentary to come. Thanks for tuning in! :-)
Yea they are my favorite helicopters. They had one here in Vegas back in 2005 lifting a new ride up on the stratosphere tower.

Wow, that really looks weird!
But one hell of engineering work that goes into it and actually fitting that tower together!! Amazing
