I don't think real wild dogs would get close to any person. They would run away unless they feel that their territory is threatened like being cornered, and then they would attack.

The bitch would not allow anyone to come between her and pups if they were wild. These are tamed domestic dogs.

@nickacil Only one problem there - hyenas are not dogs. Hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs. Probably best not to speak about things you know nothing about. FAIL

@mcruic I'd say that under normal conditions @nickacil has a point. If somebody just showed up with a camera and started filming hyena cubs, the cubs would dash for the den, and when mom showed up, he'd get the famous hyena bite.

Thing was, these weren't normal conditions. Kim Wolhuter, the camera guy, literally spent YEARS getting to know this smal clan—4 females, 1 male, cubs—so a moment like this could happen. The cubs likely saw him as much as other clan members.

Also, remember hyenas are extremely intelligent and therefore have greater flexibility in their behavior than an animal guided solely by instinct. They likely sized him up as not only posing no treat but a potential ally

@mcruic Don't troll people, yes hyenas are closely related to dogs, even classified close to the weasel family in some cases, but they have a dog like design, the muzzle, the stature, ears, face, body. Thats why people think of them as dogs, but does it matter what they are, they are hyenas, beautiful in their design.

@nickacil I had a wild female fox walk up to me with her pups when I was hunting, and they heeded no mind. Why should hyenas be an exception? Animals are only cautious if needed.

It is nice to see bonding between man and beast. We are the stuards of this earth, granted dominion over all life, sayth our Lord. It is our duty to respect and admire it. It is not always that different species find common ground and interact peacefully, especially predators. It can be occomplished everytime with man, but sadly so can just the opposite.

Following this scene, hyenas started considering the camcrew as part of the pack, he even´s gotten allowed to get too close to a kill they´ve made, thing they usually wouldn´t let happen.

There are plenty of domesticated Hyena's. Especially in Africa. Best guard dogs, even though there bot dogs lol. They are incredibly gentle when domesticated

Wonderful vid. Hyena are such interesting animals. Protective, nurturing, loving towards their young, unspeakably savage towards their prey, curious, even friendly towards humans, playful with each other—when they're not asserting iron dominance. But even then, they're interesting: males courting females have a submissive pose that makes them look like they're bowing to the object of their affection! To top it off, they even have an expressive countenance!

No they can't really be domestic but they could be domesticated if people really wanted to. All it would take is many years of selective breeding. You have to remember there is a big difference between a wild animal kept by a person that may be friendly and a genuinely domesticated animal.
